do you get the hair loss gene strictly from your father or can it come from your grandfather?

I believe it is passed on through the mother. It is something like colorblindness. Mom may not be colorblind but she can pass it on to her children because she carries a dormant form of the gene.
Mom may not have thinning hair (unlikly that she would I suppose), but if her father gave her a dormant form of the gene, she may pass it on, then the gene will become expresses in her male offspring.
