Two years ago I was in a double blind study of this drug made by 3M. The dermatologist was very upbeat about its' promise and, by tasting the drug, I believe I was one of the 50% with the real thing (not placebo). The theory was that the drug somehow causes a localized vaccination of the surrounding tissue when applied to an outbreak. It worked for me, I have been outbreak free for over two years now. And before I had been getting 4 to 6 per year for nearly 25 years. Anyway, when the study I was in, was in its 4th month, the doctor called and had me come in right away. They took the remaining medicine, did a quick summary and said the research had ended.
At that time she mentioned they were going to adjust the % strength and change the application methods and restart a new study. Since then I have heard nothing. I am cured after just 2 applications of the medicine. I still get the "pre" symptoms but no OB at all. It seems as if either there was a huge cover-up or some bad side effects, or a big sell out ? I think they still use the medicine for genital warts in the US, maybe?
