Hi, I'm on Atkins and on that diet you can't have aspertame, the sugar subsitute that's in all diet drinks. You can only have Splenda, so I bought some. It's wonderful. I add a little to caffine free tea. It's the best I have tried. No strange aftertaste and it's made from sugar, but no calories. Try it, you'll like it!

just wanted to point out that even though the packets say 0 carbs it actually has .8 carbs and atkins says to count 1 carb per packet....also check out the diet rite soft drinks made with splenda, comes in different flavors...since it is a different form of splenda, you count zero carbs with the diet rite...also great with some heavy whipping cream added for a filling snack...

Magnolia, THANK YOU, I couldn't find any soft drinks that contained Splenda, and you can only drink so much tea!! I don't think I have seen diet rite anywhere however? But at least now I know what to look for. Where do you find them? Thanks again...........Jag

Hi, just wanted to add that my friend sent me an e-mail saying she researched Splenda and that it stays in the body or something and how pilots are not permitted to fly after eating it? How bizzarre, I won't stop eating it but it was interesting info she sent.

Hi...I'm curious to know why Atkins does not allow the use of other sugar substitutes. I just came from the grocery store...and WOW!!!...Splenda isn't cheap!! Considering it is measure for measure with sugar (1 tsp Splenda = 1 tsp sugar), it must cost an arm and a leg if you really wanted to always use it in the place of sugar. Example...a 10 lb bag of sugar is $1.99. A 12 oz box of Splenda is $4 bucks!! (a 10 lb supply of Splenda would run you $55!!) How can anybody afford to substitut sugar with Splenda?

Well, part of the point of the Atkins diet is to eat less sugar and I'm sure that philosophy carries over to Splenda as well. I think substituting with Splenda is for the occassional baked goods splurge or for coffee (though I think he frowns on caffeine as well?). These are just guesses though.

Aspartame is supposed to have adverse reactions on your blood sugar (I think).

Most beverages will not list the brand name Splenda, but will list the chemical name sucralose instead. I believe the ready to drink varieties of Crystal Light use sucralose.

Since it's pretty new, it may take a while for manufacturers to switch over. Since it's not as hotly debated as Nutrasweet (aspartame) it should show up in many products. Keep looking.

Where do you get your information nsa? I work for a company that produces software for the creation of new drugs and one of my coworkers compared the molecular structure of sugar and of Splenda. They're nearly identical.

My MIL, an avid dieter, said that Splenda is made with left-over products of producing sugar from sugar cane?

I don't know how they make it or what it contains, but I do know that you can get a lot of bad information on the 'Net.

Considering what they put sugar thru (process wise), i'll take a miniscule carb/calorie from Splenda any day over bleached refined sugar!!

Splenda has been around for over 10 yrs and has never had any bad publicity about it. Processed the same way as sugar and is more of a by product, tho the name in itself doesn't sound good, by product of the sugar cane isn't that bad. As much bad publicity aspartam, nutresweet etc have had over the years, I wouldn't touch them if they were the last on this earth. Splenda works for me. And until the news reports serious problems from clinical research I'll use it.

I read somewhere that Splenda is created by bonding a chlorine molecule to sugar. This makes it undigestable. CSPI gives it a thumbs up, and they hate almost everything. ;)

Hanson's diet soda also contains splenda, and the Torani coffee syrups (the sugar free variety) are made with splenda and can be used for all kinds of things. (I get them at Cost Plus world market) The splenda measures cup for cup with sugar, but not ounce for ounce. The splenda is much lighter. The $4.00 box is equal to two pounds of sugar and lasts quite a long time for me. Blue bunny makes a yogurt with splenda that is very good. (the black forest is sinful! chocolate with cherries.) Very low glycemic index (14). I use the Carbohydrate Addict's diet and have lost the 35 lbs I wanted to lose and kept it off for 3 years now.

I tasted Splena once and decided that I will never have it again it tasted so awful! Just my opinion though. I do not agree with substitute sugars. I think they cause cancer and other things.

Let me get this right. You are on the Atkins diet and you are concerned over the safety of Splenda?

That is funny. Perhaps Mr. Atkins has stake in Splenda?

I caution anyone who thinks the Atkins diet is good. The Atkins diet emerged in the 70s and was a joke to many. It emerged again (probably when Mr. As bank account needed replenishing) in a different package. Same unhealthy diet, just a different marketing platform.

Yup, weight loss is possible on the Atkins diet, just as it is possible on the grapefruit diet BUT neither one is healthy, especially long term. Furthermore, kidneys are taxed REGARDLESS how much water you consume.

Why can't people just learn how to eat and not eliminate one food group? Why is it always "carbs are bad" or "sugar is evil" or "meat is bad for you"? Are we such a lazy society that we must have one man tell us how to eat, when to eat and what to eat? Then I think to myself, if people are so lazy that they need to follow one person's diet book, they are most likely going to fail because they cannot think for themselves and make HEALTHY eating choices.

CARBS ARE NOT THE ENEMY PEOPLE. Oh, for those of you who think "cave men" diets are healthy...let's reflect. Contrary to Atkins opinions, cave men DID eat carbs, not just meat. They ate many carb-laden veggies and some grains. I agree that not all carbs are good carbs but I would never cut out oatmeal, yams, or brown rice. That is insane!

Thanks. I am so tired of posting about the dangers of the Atkins diet! I finally stopped. These people will realize the dangers when they start having health problems. I feel like I am beating a dead horse! It is almost a cult-like following.

NO diet is the right way to go. Eating healthy and exercising is the best way. There is no magic pill or cure for weight loss except hard work and dedication. IF you really want it, you can achieve it via healthy ways and lifestyle changes. No book or pill is going to get you there and especially keep you there.

Please note: I am not referring to those who have thyroid conditions or other medical conditions that cause them to keep weight on. I am referring to the average person who doesn't have health issues.

Aspartame is banned in Japan and the Soviet Union as

a dangerous food additive. It was banned in the USA

but Donald Rumsfeld, CEO of Searle Inc. got it approved

by the FDA. Aspartame braks down to formaldehye a p

when heated, and a certain percentage turns to methyl

alcohol when yiu drink it. These are both poisons.

Sucralose is new so its toxic effects are not known.

Saccarine, the pink packet stuff is probably the safest of all the sugar substitutes, its been around the longest.

Strive is right & Paerca, too. How much meat did the cavemen actually eat? How often did they actually get to kill an animal in the wild before it ran off? They did not have guns. Even bows and arrows were invented later. They did not eat as much meat as people think they did. They lived off the plants as the major source of their diet. Atkins taxes your kidneys. Wait 10-20 years and we will see how many of the Atkins followers end up on dialysis. It also blocks up your intestines. The reason people lose weight is they cannot absorb any nutrients because their system is all clogged up. My sister-in-law had to have part of her colon removed because of bowel impaction after being on Atkins . Follow a whole foods, alkaline-ash diet if you want to be healthy and lose weight. Best of Luck to you all. Y
