Hi, I am just wondering what the doctors do when they test someone for diabetes? I am concerned, because I am always thirsty, no matter what I always need too be drinking something and I am always peeing so much. I was wondering before I call the doctor how do they test for diabetes. Is diabetes easy too live with? It is starting too get really bad with my problems. It seems like whenever I don't drink something I get a headache and it seems like I drink way too much and pee too much. Any answers are appreciated. Thanks-matt

Some other signs you might look for are blurred vision, tingling hands and feet, and especially weight loss.

If you go to the doctor the first thing they may do is test your urine for sugar. If that shows a high amount of sugar and they suspect type 1 then they may just admit you to a hospital right then. If that doesn't show anything then they may do a blood test and that will tell them your average blood sugar over the past 12 weeks or so.

You didn't say how old you are but if you go to the doc and they suspect type 1 diabetes then they will probably just admit you to the hospital for a few days to get things under control and to show you what to do. If you are older or they suspect type 2 then they will probably follow the blood test with a glucose tolerance test at another date.

You asked if it was easy to live with...well, there would be some lifestyle changes and there are things you'd have to do to stay healthy but they would discuss all that with you in the hospital.

It's concerning that you say you get headaches if you don't drink enough. That could be caused from you becoming dehydrated. You'd think that wouldn't happen because you are drinking a lot but it can still happen. If you notice dry skin or stomach cramps or any vomiting then make sure you get to a hospital asap.

Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Matt,
If you are concerned about diabetes, then please make sure that whatever you drink is not loaded with sugar. And get to your doctor and get tested...it's a simple blood test.

Most generally, the doctor has you take a fasting, diabetes blood draw. With that, only drink water. Do you drink lots of regular pop, switch to diet and water. Good luck on the test.

Hi linda, thanks for all the info. My age is 22 by the way and I have for some time had the problem with being thirsty alot, I always am bringing something with me too drink whenever I am in my car or when I am at work or college, it seems like when I don't have something too drink I do not feel good and just have a thirsty feeling all the time. I am going too the doctors next week for an appointment. I also notice that I pee more than I probaly should. I have alot of times where I wake up at night and have too pee. I pee about 12 times a day, I have been keeping track for a couple of weeks now and I don't think I ever peed over 16 times in 1 day. Well, thanks for the advice-matt

Hi, I went too the doctor too be tested and the tests show I am not diabetic, however the doctor observed that I do indeed drink alot and he is concerned, because even when I don't drink I have a need to pee. So, the doctor thinks maybe something else is wrong, but he is really wondering why I pee 12-15 times a day. Thanks for all advice everyone.-matt

Hi Matt,

Glad to hear you're not diabetic! That's good news. I am curious though....what test/tests did your doc run?

I sure hope they find out what is going on with you. Good luck.

I have had diabetes type 2 for 3 years now and when I first got tested for it I did a fasting in the morning and then a blood test and then they gave me a glucose drink (tasted like orange pop but there was a high level of sugar in it) then two hours later then test your blood again and these results will tell if you have diabetes or not. I'm in Canada so if you are in the US or another country then I don't know how your doctor does these tests. I would ask your family doctor first. I did have to do a 24 hour urine test after I got diabetes to check my protein levels. Every since I have been great with my tests for diabetes and have been in the normal range.
