My little nephew, who is almost 2 years old, was diagnosed with autism on Friday. I am glad she got the evaluation, he reminded me of my daughter at that age. I believe he will be high functioning like my daughter.
He is the 3rd person in our family with autism. My 1st cousin, in her mid 20's is autistic, my 5 year old daughter and now my nephew. My nephew's dad has a 1st cousin in her late teens with severe autism. My sister is pretty much on her own raising him, the dad is not any help and they are divorced. Luckily my parents are a huge help.
I don't know what to think about this, so many in one family. My sister is a strong girl, so I know she will do just fine with a special needs child, she has so far!

I to have three cousins that have autism on my fathers side, one on my mom. I am the only one out of my sisters that has kids. I have three kids and only one my son has been affected w/autism. I am curious to see if my sisters childrens will be affected. And my cousins that have AS and HFA are not old enough to have kids. My best wishes go out to your family! Your sister is lucky to have a sister like you. God bless.

i too have an aunty and uncle (brother and sister of my mum) who are on the spectrum, my daughter is autistic, so we too have 3 members of our family on the spectrum, i'm glad my daughter was given to me instead of my sisters or brother, she wouldn't have stood a chance. goodluck to you and your sis, i'm sure you will be a wealth of experience for her!

Because the US took mercury out of baby vaccines, I really don't know why a 2 year old can get autism. Did he take flu shots? I am a supporter of mercury-autism theory but I start to get confused.

My nephew didn't have flu shots. There are 3 people in our family with autism. To me, it seems genetic. My cousin is just a little bit younger then me, she is about 25, I don't know if the preservative was in her shots. Alot of people feel that in the 1990s, when mercury was added to vaccines to add time to the shelf life, that was when the explosion happened, it was around 83 when her DR suggested autism. My daughter was born in Dec 1999, so she could have been exposed to the vaccines in question. My nephew was born in late 2003, so the mercury should have been out of the vaccines by that point.
Autism may be caused by vaccines in alot cases, but in our case, it must be genetic.
