I'll share with you what happened to me, and I think it'll answer your questions. I did not have the virus, but decided (much to my regret now) to make-out with someone who did. He not only kissed my lips, but also my nose, chin, neck, and chest. I ended up with blisters everywhere that he kissed me. The virus went crazy in my system and I looked hideous for weeks. The sores were huge and very painful. I do not believe anyone can catch the virus without direct skin on skin contact. About condom use, I think it can prevent the spread at certain times, but may not be 100% effective in spreading the virus. Even with a condom on, it is possible for genitalia to touch.
