not sure how to explain it, but it's just the way you walk.
I'll try to use it in a sentence
The old mans gait had slowed down since he had foot surgery
or
the little girl had a spring in her gait

If the lady at the hospital referred to "closing the gate" she probably meant "gate" not "gait". It makes no sense in that context.
Gait refers to the way you walk.
Gate is something on hinges that swings open in your garden or yard.

Hi Tobias2
I am a 38 year old lady i think i know the difference between gate and gait!! the lady in hospital referred to closing the gate as in the walking but i did not understand the actual conversation as i previously stated i was high on morphine, but thank you for your reply not sure if you are being sarcastic or being helpful but unfortunatly you have not answered my question which was previously asked :nono: ,

HipHop--I'm sure Tobias didn't meant to come across as sarcastic, and the question has kind of been answered. Gait does refer to the way you walk........smoothly, limping, etc. Have you ever heard of a gaited horse? They have several different ways of walking which they can use in shows, etc. All of us here are striving for a smooth gait. Sure isn't coming very fast for me, though!

Hi Anne,
Thank you i certainly have got the gait!! mind you its very early days for me i am still on crutches so only to be expected, i keep leaving the crutches and have a little walk without them but certainly not ready, when i lay on the bed i cannot lift my leg up i can from the knee but not from my hip, did you have the same problem and if so how long did it take you and did you have any physio as i had a little but was told i have got to wait another two weeks to have hydro pool i just feel i should be doing more on the weaknesses, how are you feeling today, :)
