hello all,
im 5' 10" 125lbs 19yrs old.
I am very skinny. I eat alot of cheese, bread, pasta and chicken. I have been trying to put on weight and eat as big of helpings of food as i can. my sister is sometimes stunned at how much pasta i eat at dinner but no matter what I cannot put on any weight. I sometimes consume well over 1000 calories by lunch time and dinner is my biggest meal of the day. I am very inactive since i work on a computer all day and go straight back on the comp when i get home.
I have 2 questions, 1) am I doing myself more harm than good by eating alot of food and not being active? 2) why do you think i am not putting on weight and what should i do to gain weight?
Regards,
jordan

Jordan,
I would suggest you to consult a dietician and follow his advices. I am naturally thin ever since I was 15 and my family and friends insisted that I take a high fat high volume diet with lot of calories. Whenever I raised concern, they laughed at my worried. After 20 years on a high fat diet, I am still underweight, but with coronary heart disease.

jordan,
It's your age and hormones. THey will allow you to eat whatever you want. Don;t force food though just to meet a number. As the decades roll by you will need less and less food and bad overeating habits will get you fatter and fatter and fatter.
Start lifting weights so that as you DO "fill out" it will be with mucle rather than fat.
In high school I could eat 3000 calories a day and stay slim and trim. Many years later if I tried that, I'd need a forklift to carry me around.
Enjoy being thin; it's healthy.

see there is my concern. is your coronary heart disease a result of your high fat diet? I would have thought that if you are not gaining weight then you are not doing your body any harm.

A steady high fat doet has a steady stream of fat going from gut to liver and out to cells for burning or storage. The fat is carried around by protein and cholesterol (lipoprotein.) With every blood pass this fat goes though the heart over and over til it's used up and then the next meal piles some more in.
So even if you are not depositing fat in your love handles a high fat diet can damage your heart. Skinny people can get heart disease.

Oh my god, same here! im 17 and im 5'11 and weight about 125, my parents say that I should eat alot of fat and that thats how I can gain weight, and I said NO, because protein gives you the muscles and strength but The fat gives you the heart disease, since I learned the truth about fat I always look at the nutrition facts on every food I eat and never ever take anything which has too much of it!
I dont have a problem with my skinnyness but everyone keeps telling me to do strength training because pretty much all I want is a nice visible six-pack and overal a good looking body, but just a little, NOT like the wrestler kind.

ok, first of all, i am so glad you did not listen to your parents and start eating a lot of fat. that has to be one the STUPIDEST things i have heard of yet. try eating a lot of natural vegetables and fruits and whole grains, beans. i wouldn't worry too much with your cardio, try about 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes. also, if you're going to do weight training to build some shape to your body, start with the weights, then do your cardio on cardio days, never do cardio first. and you say you want abs, work your abs right after your weight training, or after your cardio, you might find you get better results that way. what does a typical day include for you food wise???

hey, just a little question slightly off topic. how are your pecs? I have almost no pecs and am pretty flat if you look at me from the side. I really want to build my pecs and arms. since im skinny, abs are the things i worry about least. i dont have visible muscles but my gut is flat and im happy with that.
and thanks to all for your help. im gonna try lessening my fat and increasing my protein intake. sounds good?

Bench presses, both flat and inclined and bench flies (easier if you have a pec deck) are the things for you. The presses will do the chest, shoulders and triceps.
Do curling for the biceps.
Pull-ups (again easier on a machine) will give you the "wings" that make both chest and back look good!
That's a great chest and arms (and a bit of back) workout that will pay fast divideds.

see there is my concern. is your coronary heart disease a result of your high fat diet? I would have thought that if you are not gaining weight then you are not doing your body any harm.
My doctor could not find any other reason than my high fat diet as the single biggest factor.
As lenin told, circulating fat can be really dangerous. As ion my case, it can exist in body fooling yourself and all your physicians, till it cloggs arteries. Regardless you are lean or overweight, careless diets can have serious results.

You know, i'm in the same situation. I'm 27, 5'10, and 125lbs also. For me, if i eat alot, or eat next to nothing, i will have no change in weight. I must admit that being this thin is quite frustrating.
The comment about the heart disease is quite true. Heart disease runs in my family so i get reguarly checked for cholestoral levels. And yup, i have borderline high cholestoral. I've been using exercise and some medication to control it. So even us skinny guys are not immune.
One thing i would check into also is celiac disease. Its basically a wheat allergy that causes damage to the villi in your small intestine. Over time the villi flatten and they cannot correctly absorb the nutrients your body needs. This could lead to weight loss... I'm getting tested for this in a few weeks.

dont try to put on weight through fat. Avoid saturated fat at all costs. It's really bad for you and leads to many problems later on in life. Instead try to increase your protein amount. Go to a nutrition store and buy protein shakes, that way you will keep all of your muscle mass. most people don't get enough protein per day. I'm 135 lbs and i need about 50-100 grams of protein a day. there are online protein calculators for your weight, try to look one up, and focus on getting that much protein per day without the saturated fat. Simply unhealthy. good luck.

I went for my test today, and based on the visual exam everything looked okay. (apart from me waking up in the middle of the exam and struggling with the doctor trying to pull the tube out). He took one biopsy from my stomach and another from my small intestine. I'll find out in a few weeks to see the results of that.
