Whats the deal with veggie burgers? There is absolutely no meat but they have a high protein content. Can they still count as part of your protein intake? Are they healthy to eat when working out and your goal is to get fit and lose weight?

Oh sure they can.
The high protein content comes from soy, usually "textured soy protein." It's the best protein source for anyone on a vegan diet.

Veggie burgers are usually soy which is really high protein (as Lenin said).
Garden burgers are usually various made of vegetables like mushrooms, carrots, zuchini (or any veggies) and beans or rice. Not as high protein as soy. When people think of veggie burgers, I think they visualize these ingredients and don't realize that there are others with high protein.

veggie burgers are delicious and full of nutrients.
In addition to the soy based ones, you can get gluten/seitan based ones, and all-plant burgers like Sunshine burgers, and Amy's California burgers.
yum!

Yes, soy burgers are good for you, and the protein does count toward your intake. For a lot of vegetarians and vegans, it would be difficult to get enough protein without soy.

I'd LOVE to try my hand at making these things...does anyone have any tips?
Is egg necessary to hold the veg together? If not, what is used?

Lenin,
My recipe for lentil burgers:
Cook lentils in 2-1/2 to 3 times water (no need to presoak) for 20-30 minutes till done (with bay leaf if desired -- then discard bay leaf at end). Saute onion and garlic. In a bowl, mix 1 egg, grated carrot, some chickpea (garbonzo bean) flour, toasted sesame seeds, ground almonds, seasonings such as cumin, ground coriander, chili flakes, etc, dash of salt. Stir in lentils and enough water to make somewhat gloppy dough. Make patties and saute.
You can probably make the burgers without egg. Try different kinds of lentils. The usual brown ones are ok, but you can get more flavor from the Indian dahl ones. I serve mine with basmati rice (with safran and dried cranberries), some green veggie and a dollop of quark or yoghurt.
They make great leftovers for lunch the next day. Yummy!

I'll give that a try Rheanna, thanks.
I have plenty of Indian markets in the vicinity and even my ShopRite has started carrying chana dal.
