Hi !
I think maybe I need a bit of help here. Done my full blood counts twice, once today and last time 2 months ago. Both results are quite similar. My red blood cell counts is 3.88 today and last time 3.81. The normal range is 3.8 to 5.8. As you can see now, my RBC is on the low side. My MCV is 99 and 100fl and as you can see is slightly on the high side. The norm is 80-97. My MCH is 34.3 slightly on the high. Other results are okay and normal. The red cell indices look like macrocytic but I didn't really do a thin blood PBF to look at the cells.. SO actually I was thinking any cause for alarm here based on my results? I do feel fatigue easily.. I am curious why my RBC is quite low but normal.. Anyway the rest of the results as follow..
plt: 273(150-390)
Hgb: 13.3(11-16.5)
RDW:13.5(10-15)
wbc:6.8(3.5-10)
HCT:38.4(35-50)
MPV:6.9(6.5-11)

Thanks for any inputs.. :bouncing:

Have they checked your ferritin (iron stores) level? It can cause fatigue as well.

no ferritin check yet, but i am suspecting b12 or folic deficiency.. because since my hb seems on avg level.. shldn't be a ferritin prob. since just mildly high so i am jus going to take some vits and supple hope a few mths later it will improve. actually it is not the numbers here, but the fatigue i feel, and anxiety is real ! Real real real.. haha..

I think you need to take an Iron supplement to build up you RBC & HCT-- but take an organic type that is more readily absorbed -- the ones sold at health food stores that don't constipate you!!

Hiya,

Just to add my two pennies worth. I'd get your B12 and ferritin checked. Low B12 doesn't always show up in FBC results.

I'd recommend seeing your doctor before taking any iron supplements. If your ferritin level is normal, that may not be the problem and too much iron is just as bad as not enough. If you should end up taking iron tablets then it's a great idea to take some that have Vit C with them, it helps you to absorb the iron.

Hope you find the answer soon!

Best wishes:)

Littlehampster,

I've got some questions on my blood work as well. These are the results
RBC 5.9
WBC 5.9
hemoglobin 13.0
Which is all good then comes:

hematocrit 49.2 (H)
MCV 113.9 (H)
MCHC 26.4 (L)
RDW 14.8 (H)

My dr. is thinking polycythemia vera????

Hi

I have no idea when u posted to my thread with your question.. maybe opening a thread to put your question will be better, but I can tell you that is your MCV is too high. Above 100 is high already.

Hi

I have Pernicious Anemia - diagnosed 2 years ago. Initial alarms was a high MCV - started at 99 and within 8mths got to 117 by which time I was totally exhausted all the time. As I had been diagnosed with Hashimotos disease (Low Thyroid) it was assumed that it was the cause for my fatigue and elevated MCV.

I also wanted to advice you not to take any suppliments eg Folic Acid, B12 or Iron as these could confuse the issue.

Good luck!!
