I feel like the only place I can complain is here .. please forgive me if I get annoying ok?
Today was uneventful .. took MIL to see FIL today. Advised FIL that I may have a job in queensland. He wasn't very vocal about that. Fast forward .. BIL took FIL to the doctor this afternoon. MIL leapt in the car, she was going too!! Good thing she did too! They managed to get her seen by the nurse, who discovered a HUGE UTI! (Urinary Tract Infection) .. ah HA !!! She didn't have one last week when I rushed her to the hospital .. but it must've been coming ... GOOD .. now she's on antibiotics .. all we've gotta do is convince her she has to take them.... that'll be another story .. I can just tell.
Anyway, FIL invited me to the club for a drink, which I took up. After all, I'm supplying him some hot meals for dinner (instead of the offered sandwiches - yuck) .. and we had it sorted that DH would take him back to the nursing home. I would duck home and reheat the food so it would be hot when it got to him, and BIL would follow me and pick it up and take it to FIL while DH got FIL settled.
I tell ya .. it's a circus around here, but it worked. Sent BIL off with FIL's goodies ...
Then I reheated MIL's dinner, and sent Cameron down with it, only to have him wander back upstairs saying he couldn't find Nanna.
$HIT!! Where has she gone NOW??? It's DARK .. it's past 6.30 .. it's cold'ish .. I rang BIL, but his phone was engaged, I rang DH and told him. I leapt in the car and drove to her 'spots' from the last few days .. no MIL. DH and BIL started driving around her other 'spots', I came home and rang the Police.
Ah ha!! They had her! Somebody (?) had brought her into the Police Station. She had been found nearby the police station however. That's a BLOODY LONG WALK !! She had had a fall, and the Police called the Ambulance.
The ambulance guys were the same ones I called last week!!! They checked her out, found a grazed knee, and brought her home. I called BIL, he came over. DH was home by then. We rang FIL and he settled into eating his dinner I had supplied. MIL got out of the ambulance, smiling. The Ambo's told me she was OK.. BP was GOOD (miracles do happen .. must've been all that exercise) she was very wobbly. She had been incontinent AGAIN (but only a little bit -- hurry up samples) they were happy with her however.
Got her inside, just as BIL turned up. He went to her and said "Mum, this isn't working, you can't go out wandering like this, people will get fed up and lock you up"
! What did I say? He's frightened she'll be put away.
Anyway, she got quite angry with him, not enough to hit, but very cross, and as I heated up her dinner, he kept telling her she can't wander out at night like this. I gave her dinner, got her a glass of wine ... oh she's a mess .. a bloody mess. BIL ended up going home
But on the bright side whilst we were at the club, I mentioned we were going away for school holidays. OH !! So Is BIL !! OH !! I offered to get in Meals on Wheels .. NO shout FIL and BIL .. She needs somebody around!!! Get her into respite if you can !!
Ah ha !!
So I'll be hunting THAT down next week, because I'll have to hunt it down becuase NOBODY else will .. but if I can swing it, I will !!!!
Anyway, Like I said, taking extra medication is going to be another story ...... Cameron's just gone downstairs to try and get MIL to take her medication for her UTI .. (she thinks it's for the sun cancers burnt off her hand the other day) and REFUSED. Cameron even suffered Nanna Wrath (not pretty people, not pretty) and came upstairs quite shaken.
Oh .. I am SO looking forward to the weekend .......

Hi Sally,
Mercy!!!!!!!! What you manage to deal with and be civil about is enough to crush an elephant. Tell all, complain, and/or rant at will!! We're here!
About MIL's UTI, I wonder if it burns and stings as she pees? If so, you might (maybe, perhaps) have success in her taking the antibiotic if you tell her that it will make the burning go away. An untreated or undertreated UTI can get ugly. The UTI may be the culprit in the unwelcome pee messes, too, as MIL cannot manage the urgency. I do think it's another huge step back for MIL to round on Cameron as she's usually been so good and cooperative with his kind methods of dealing with her.
Good that BIL got an eyeful at last, but what archaic place is he imagining with the phrase "lock you up"??? Many of the homes for the dotty are lovely, so being "locked up" is oh-so-pleasant, especially after the sweeties forget to try to get out. Again, I think it's the money he minds being spent. How funny that FIL and BIL have at last got it into their heads that MIL cannot be left alone with Meals on Wheels just bringing food. You have accomplished much in getting their blinders off to that extent, Sally!!
When are school holidays? Is that when you move north over the summer?
What kind of place in FIL in that they don't offer a hot dinner? That isn't good. Hope your efforts to find respite care for MIL will also turn up better accomodations (larger room, fewer stupid rules, and hot meals) for FIL. He'd better hope you can find such a place because I cannot see L taking FIL a hot dinner after you're happily in Queensland!!! Speaking of Queensland, glad the family is on notice!
Good luck this weekend! Hope all is calm and all is bright .... oops, wrong season for that song, but not the wishes !
Hugs, girlfriend! Barbara :)

Oh Sally, it goes from bad to worse. BIL's comments to his mother just point out how far from reality he is: she cannot respond to "don't do that!" She doesn't think about it, she just GOES. He is still trying to reason with her! He has not even read the FIRST article on Alzheimer's Disease or any of the dementias..
I can't believe his training to be an RN did not include this ..but it obviously didn't.
It seems like things are falling apart in this family .. and even worse, I sense that YOU will be blamed for not staying home. Don't let it get you down. You go ahead, on vacation and then the Big Move .. you HAVE to do it for your sake and your kids' sakes ... let the other sons of your in laws step in and do their job for once...
Love,
Martha

It's amazing what happens to people when MIL keeps ending up at the Police Station! It's been this week that's brought it home (for the moment) with FIL and BIL. And .. having that drink at the club and having 'little jokes' at MIL's expense with 'da boys' was probably the best therapy I did.
Obviously talking to them seriously about my concerns didn't work. So I went along with them and Lo and Behold ... they finally admit there's a problem.
Of course, we've been to this stage once before when I thought they had finally 'got it', so I am hoping to keep the momentum going. I just need ACAT to play along with me!
Ok .. School Rules here in Australia. Our kids get Xmas to the end of January off as Summer Holidays (6-7 weeks). They then get another 2 weeks around April. They then get another 2 weeks in July (3 if your at certain private schools), and another 2 weeks in September/October.
It's the September/October holidays we're going to duck down to Alan's cousins (The Tomato farm) for the week. BIL and "L" are going north to Rockhampton (way high up in Queensland). NOBODY is begrudging us the week away .. GOOD!! All we have to do is figure out how to get some beer to FIL every night, and hope we get a Respite Room for MIL.
Now . . . as for Nursing homes. 98% of them give you a normal average everyday breakfast. You get a hot meal at lunchtime (baked dinner, stews, casseroles, etc) and you get something light for dinner. This is the discrepancy. The NH FIL is in tends to give out sandwiches 3 nights a week (yuck) or a salad (just salad ...) or rubbery poached eggs, or spaghetti or beans on toast. Most of the nursing homes offer something light, but not quite as slack .... this way they are covering diet (we should all eat big at lunchtime, and like a sparrow at dinner time) and they are being cost effective (they only need a chef/cook for 2 hours instead of 4).
It all boils down to money.
Anyway .. today is Saturday. A brand new day .. we shall see what the day unfolds .... I hope one of us can get some antibiotics into MIL or she's REALLY going to be on a first name basis with the Police Force.
Cheers all
Hugs

You do have your plate full, girl! Lets hope that BIL and FIL finally agree that MIL needs round the clock care. But I just can't help but wonder why you're the one having to make the arrangements. It shouldn't all fall on your shoulders.
Btw, how is your shoulder? Are you still doing all this stuff with the pain you were in? Or has the pain gotten better? I surely hope it has.
Love, Barb
PS Shame on BIL threatening his mum like that!

AFternoon Barb,
My shoulder is a lot happier now unless I put my heavy school bag on the mainly affected side, then I'll feel it for a few days. I did turn a 'patient' the other day adn felt a twinge, but was told that's cause I did it wrong ... when I did it 'right' .. it didn't hurt.
So I guess I just gotta be careful with myself .....
MIL having issues about taking extra medication .. I've pinched a few tablets so I can put a dose in her food at night. At least I'll get SOMETHING into her!
I'll be nagging ACAT on Monday ... they'll have to talk to me eventually. I don't mind trying to organise it, because at least I know it will get done!!!!!
Hugs

My dog takes pills for hypothyroidism (yes, her too!) and epilepsy. The only way I can get her to take them is to hide them in peanut butter. Maybe something like that would work for MIL?
I understand about not minding organising as long as MIL is well taken care of and you're free to go to Queensland.
Will you be near the ocean and the Great Barrier Reef?

Hi there Sally,
I hope you have a nice weekend. Maybe MIL will behave for a few days. I will keep my fingers crossed that you do get the respite care - for your holiday! I am sure you need it. I have read that putting crushable pills in applesauce works quite well. My dog :D takes his pills in cheese or meat cubes. That probably would not work for MIL.
You take care Sally. Wannabe

I'm thinking of putting in her mashed potato for the moment. I don't do desserts here at home, so it's a bit hard in ice-cream & sauce .. I'm not sure if she would even eat that, but I do know she'll eat mashed potato! If we can get two doses into her per day, it's better than nothing. She didn't argue with Alan over this mornings extra tablet, but refused for Cameron this afternoon (and he didn't push it ... he learnt that lesson quickly) I've snaffled one tablet (sitting most unhygenically in my shirt pocket here) awaiting the mashing of potato.
Now .. if I can just remember the systems of the body without forgetting one, I'll be happy. I've got an exam on Tuesday and I'm having small fits over this one (this ISN'T open book much to our horror)
Hugs

Ok .. I'm pretty sure the mashed potato trick worked!
Yay Me !!
She took a morning tablet, BIL turned up for 15 minutes this afternoon and she got another tablet in, I got one in her food (dunno if it's any good ... antibiotic in hot mash .. but it's worth a try) ....
She actually stayed HOME tonight .. no wanderings, but she's just been incontinent in the dining room (it's 10.50pm Saturday night) and is now, as I type, having a shower. I don't have time to mop it up right now (cause that'll make the floor wetter) so I'm hoping she just puts herself to bed .. I'll keep checking on her.
Now .. to remember the body systems .. I've come up with a word:
DRIMNERSLUC
Digestive, Reproductive, Integumentary, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Respiratory, Skeletal, Lymphatic, Urinary and Cardiovascular !!
If I can remember THAT WORD, I can remember the disease I've chosen to go with it, I can remember the signs & symptoms, and I can remember, MOSTLY what me, as an AIN is supposed to do.
DRIMNERSLUC !!!! DRIMNERSLUC !!!! DRIMNERSLUC !!!!
My theory ... LOL

Hey Sally,
What on earth is integumentary? I have never heard that word! Does it have anything to do with gums? Like in your mouth?! It sounds like you are becoming very, very smart!!!
And you are doing quite well on the pill hiding/disguising business! So far, none of that has to be done by me, except for our 11 1/2 yr. old yellow Lab. Has bad arthritis!
Good Luck on you test. Wannabe

Integumentary - skin .. our outter covering, and the covering of our organs
I thought I knew alot of medicine, but now I more .. can you imagine if I keep going in nursing what ELSE there is to know?
MIL was incontinent in bed last night, she covered up the evidence, but I found it! (Super Sleuth Sally) so whilst she was at church, we got her bed stripped, remade, bedding washed and hung out (it's a wet day today too), I'm doing another load of her clothes as I type. I'm trying to dry mine out (it got caught in the wet downpour of this morning) -->
I found a bottle of wine 1/2 full with a tube of lipstick in it (confused it with a cork perhaps?) and 2 nights worth of dinner's wrapped up in pieces of material and put at the back of cupboards .. ewwwwwwwwwww
Cheese and bacon found in the laundry, a block of cheese found in a bowl with another bowl inverted .. she hasn't taken her tablets AGAIN today, so I've left them out for her as a memory jog ....
I've done a run around the house and found all her smelly soiled clothes (yuck) and put them in the wash, mopped the floors where she had her episode last night ...
And now the house downstairs looks perfectly normal ('cept for the huge red wine stains on the carpet .. yes, new ones).

Hi Sally,
We may well know that word "DRIMNERSLUC", but not its meanings!!! I do not think I could do nursing and like it, as you do! I guess, we will see how my sister and I do in the future. Caring for an alzheimers relative, either makes you want to help others - heathwise - or want to stay way, far away from that kind of job/helping! Did you ever want to be a nurse before MIL got il? Thanks for the definition! :> Lets see if I can retain it.
Are you still either making notes on MILs doings, or taking any pictures? I hope that you do every now and then. Did you chunk the wine/lipstick or keep it?
Good Luck for the rest of the afternoon. Sounds like you need a few hours rest!
Take care. Wannabe

Hi Wannabe
The way I got Drimnersluc was from taking the first letter from each body system and making it into a sayable word .. hence drimnersluc
Digestive, Reproductive, Integumentary, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Respiratory, Skeletal, Lymphatic, Urinary and Cardiovascular !!
Anyway .. yes, I always wanted to be a nurse, but my maths mark was much much too poor (I am dyslexic in maths, but excellent in english) .. so that's why I ended up as a medical secretary .. the next best thing. :D
Well, now I'm older, my maths mark is still bad LOL .. so this is the only way I can start the career .. at the bottom .. as a nurses assistant, although it doesn't sound as bad as it could, because AIN's (Assistant in Nursing) get to be with the patients much more than the Registered Nurses !!!
I'm seriously considering specialising in Aged Care.. I've had enough experience over a relative short period of time, that hopefully, I can make a difference ... improve the system perhaps I don't know yet, I'm just taking it as it comes for now.
First: Finish the course
2nd: get to queensland
AFter THAT .. we'll figure out which door to open.
I still make my notes on MIL's behaviour. I just had two nieces pop in (they live out of town) and they didn't really want to know about Nanna's odd behaviour. I give up. The whole family is in denial and don't want to know. So tomorrow, Monday, I'll start taking things that step further. I have to, or they will swallow me whole and I'll just be a slave.
I left the bottle of wine with the lipstick on the bench, because BIL was coming over. Funny .. L turned up too (to make a helpful impression on nieces I'm sure) SHE mowed the lawn while BIL painted weeds. Wasn't she just a helpful little bunny. I actually didn't even speak to her. I was quite proud of myself.
Anyway, I'm sounding bitchy ... MIL has gone to the club AGAIN with FIL and DH .. which usually means a most unsettled night.
Time to head
Hugs
Sally

Hugs

She mowed the LAWN??? By George, she CAN do something!!! But of course only when she wants to impress someone. ;)
I hope the unsettled night you were expecting never came to be. Hopefully MIL came home and went to bed.
Have you been in touch with ACAT? I suspect you were on the phone as soon as they opened Monday? Just a tad more than 3 1/2 months till January. It can't come soon enough, can it?
No, you're not being bitchy. You're tired of all the runaround you're getting. Who wouldn't be? It's perfectly understandable. Things are getting worse it seems by the hour with MIL and all you're asking is for her family to understand that and make provisions for her future. That's not too much to ask. You've had the role of caretaker to her and FIL for longer than most daughters-in-law would.
Cheers to you Sally!
Love, Barb

Hi Sally,
I agree with Barb! You are the best thing - for FIL and MIL - that could have ever happened to them. They know it too - just do not say it! The other family members, except for those living in your house, are just pretenders. That is so odd (about the nieces), because my daughters and my niece are always wanting to know how their grandparents are! In detail, too!
You are not being bitchy - just telling it like it is!!! And you are not your MIL and FILs, Slave - just the most helpful and caring daughter in law ever!
Let us hear about ACAT and if they will give MIL/you the respite that you want.
Take care. Love, Wannabe

I rang ACAT this afternoon (hit the floor running this morning ..) and talked to a different lady about getting our original lady to ring me back .. I said who I was and said "I have family permission to get respite!!" and she let out a Whoop of joy !!! She was VERY proud of the way I 'manouvered' the situation to my advantage ...
Manouvered? I just told the facts .. I'm going away --> nobody will be in town .. something will have to be done.
Anyway .... nieces will be dubious about my story's because they're stories are more interesting (they are selfish young 20 somethings .. its still all about them) and of course, they will prefer to believe their father, who still has rose coloured glasses on (although they have a grey'ish tinge to them for now). People don't want to hear that their grandparents aren't going to get better. At this stage, the girls are still just kids.
We had a little bit of an unsettled night with MIL, but nothing major THANK HEAVENS. She just left the house all lit up and the front door unlocked and went to bed with the light on ... which is fine .. i wait until she's really snoozing, then I can clean up her messes and lock up (or Alan does .. depends who get's up first)
Now .. TODAY AT CLASS: I got signed off for - Blood Glucose Level taking, sponge-bath's, making a bed with a person in it, and showering, although I didn't actually DO the showering because I crushed my middle finger in a mannequins knee and it hurt like heck for a while .. I can move it now .. so nothing major.
Gotta go .. Cameron's chopping up Steak & Kidney for me to make pies, so I had better help.
DRIMNERSLUC tomorrow ! LOL
Hugs

Hi Sally,
Hope you aced your test! I am sure you did very well. How do you take blood glucose? Is it different than other blood tests? That is a diabetes blood test - or a test to tell if your sugar level is to high, right? And yall use dummies to learn most things in your class? Do you guys ever use real people - like each other?
That is great that the ACAT ladies are excited for you. I am sure they will do all they can to get you and your family the respite care for MIL!
Take care. Love, Wannabe

ACAT rang me, they've managed to snaffle 16 days of Respite Care at the nice nursing home I volunteer at!! Woo hoo!!! Starting on the 21st September through to the 6th October ... better than nothing!!
Blood glucose is all done by machine (thankfully) you insert a little tab into a machine, ***** someones unsuspecting finger, put the drop of blood on the tab, and wait, wait, wait .. *PING* .. there's the level. Then you have to figure if it's normal, and if not, why not etc ...
Yes, we practice on dummies alot, but we do get to practice on each other .. especially with Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose Tests, Temperature, Pulse, Respiration, moving patients manually and with machines ... it's good fun and I love the hands on days.
Ok .. **drum roll** I got 94% in my Anatomy & Physiology Exam !! Yay Me !! Today's test, for all my hissy fits and panic attacks ended up, at the last minute, being open book.
On the bright side, I'm really up on the body systems LOL .. I DID learn something!!
FIL is home for a sleepover tonight. MIL is somewhat agitated. She's quite fretful at the change in plans. I even managed to be strong enough to FIL and tell him we wouldn't be eating dinner with him tonight (but I will go down for a drink) ~~ I fixed a thing on the curtain rail, and MIL said NO NO NO .... and I said YES YES YES, and she laughed (phew) and then she showed me a bank receipt from July and said NO NO NO, and I said "it's an old one" and she said 'NO IT'S NOT" .
She can only yell at the moment and be negative. You tell me she's not stressed! FIL seems blissfully unaware however. Typical COPD patient!!
His bed is made, his blanket is on, his pillow is fluffed, his oxygen is behaving ... he knows I have a lot of work to do and he knows Alan is pretty flat out with his stuff too, so although we've been running up and downstairs since we got home (1 hour ago) hopefully he'll settle for the night.
I hope.
Ok .. off before I get summoned again LOL
Hugs

Hi Sally,
Forgot to say CHEERS!!!!!!!!!! for your great grade on your A&P exam!! You go girl!!!!
As for FIL, His Grace the Demanding, just tell him you're sorry, but you cannot drop all that's on your plate already to accomodate the errands he'd like done. BIL can take FIL those places on the days off between his flights. Hope the new bathroom is ready very early in the day!!!
More on other thread!

Hi Sally,
It sounds like you are going to pass that class with flying colors! If you are top of the class, do you think that they will give you a special certificate? Then you could show it to whoever you applied to for a job.
I bet your legs are tired from going up and down the stairs! At least hubby is helping you some. You had better watch it, or FIL will want to stay even longer. Especially if you give him too good of care! Poor MIL, alzheimers people do not like change of any kind. Especially if they are farther along, like MIL. She probably feels like it is an invasion of her privacy and her home. AND her Sally!!!!! She does not want to share you or your husband with FIL!
Take care and try not to wear yourself out. Love, Wannabe
