Many people have clenching or grinding habits. It most commonly occurs during bedtime and is usually stress related. However, it can contribute to oral problems down the road if not treated such as--fractured teeth or fillings, periodontal disease/recession, occlusion discrepancies, premature wear/sensitivity and TMJ problems. It is most commonly treated with an occlusal guard or night guard the patient wears at night made by the dentist or a dental lab.

Do i have to wear it lifetime or just for a short period of time?
