Hello everyone, I have a really nasty case of OCD that I dont really want to discuss on here, as well as severe depression because of it. I read in one post that Pure "O's" isnt as debilitating ie housebound, but thats exactly how Ive become. I avoid people because my obsessions are so strong I become lost in my own thoughts when people are talking to me and my mood is always awful with people asking whats wrong its too tedious to be around people like this. A few years ago I was put on Prozac which was a miracle for me and worked for quite a bit.... That is... until it didnt anymore. The prozac stopped working after some time known as the "prozac poop-out" and Ive been trying different meds ever since. I went back to prozac which worked well again, for a short period, then stopped again. Now somehow, something in my body has changed. All SSRI drugs are now giving me severe headaches (even prozac) so I am now trying a natural approach, using 5-htp for serotonin some l-tyrosine st johns wort and am also on depakote as my psychiatrist diagnosed me as having bipolar, because I newver told her about the obsessions (they are too embarassing and shameful.) I am thinking of adding a heavy workout routine and my main reason for making this post was to see if there was anyone on the board with ocd who is in great physical shape. I am determined to try everything necessary to regain my life, now all i have to do is quit smoking, lol, i only lasted 5 minutes of billy blanks bootcamp. Anyway my question was about anyone being in good shape yet still having symptoms, i only typed out the rest to give u a better idea of where im coming from. I wish u all the best and appreciate and advice and words of inspiration. BTW has anyone here cured themselves or know someone who rid themselves of OCD. I know many doctors say its incurable but then again so is cancer but people have been rid of it.

Hey man, Im sorry to hear you also suffer from symptoms, as my theory was that being in peak physical shape would probably decrease symptoms. If its not too much trouble would u mind listing the types of symptoms and how severe they are, how long youve had the symptoms, and what your diet is like. Can u tell me what vitamins u take, and have u tried amino acids like 5htp, serotonin booster. I have decided that if I am gonna releive myself of this mental hell, I must give it my all including becoming extremely active, trying new suplements treatments whatever it takes. It sux to hear that the answer is so unclear but I hope you wont mind sharing some info with me. Also if youd rather not talk about it I completely understand and thank you for your response.

Hey, I have OCD and I find that going to the gym helps out a lot. When I was at my worst I feared getting my heart rate up thinking something would happen and I would pass out, but I was able to get by that and now I find that the endorphins I get from working out make me feel so much better and it increses my self-esteem which gives me more confidence and an ability to try controlling my OCD symptoms. It's a nasty fight but worth it. I would definetly recommend taking up some sort of exercise routine as well as healthy eatting.

Although I'm not in PEAK shape I'd say now I'm in pretty good shape and pretty healthy diet wise. I don't agree with the doctors who say OCD is not curable because I myself am cured. I am cured not because I no longer have intrusive thoughts or bad thoughts but I am cured because they no longer have much if any effect on me. When I came down with OCD it was shortly after I first came down with depression and general anxiety/panic disorder. When people lable mental disorders like depression, anxiety, bipolar, paranoid schizo, ocd etc... they are labeling it as a whole bunch of different disorders based on your description and symptoms, but I don't think of them as different disorders per se but just different manifestations of some underlying chemical imbalance which could have been triggered by a variety of factors environmental, genetic, as well as psychological that differs for different people. That's why they haven't found a cure for mood disorder yet. They are labeling the symptom and not the actual mechanism malfunction in the mind/body because they don't know it yet so cures are a long way's away. Having said that I think the best way to fight this today is to give your body what it needs in order to balance itself out. The body has an intrinsic ability to heal and balance so what we must do is give it what it needs to best perform it's job. Throwing ssri's and other drugs at it might work or it just might delay and even hamper our bodies to naturally heal it'self, whereas taking supplements like Omega 3 which has a lifting effect on mood as well as provides the brain with the fat it needs to rebuild and repair itself is a better alternative. Not saying that people shouldn't take the drugs if they really need it but if at all possible it'd be best to avoid them in my opinion.
One thing we all should do mental disorder or no mental disorder is excercise. It may not cure but excercise has proven to have a dramatic effect on metabolism, and the stress response. We all know that having OCD, depression, anxiety, panic has an enormous toll on our bodies. This is due to corisol and adrenaline being shot out and pumped throughout our bodies like crazy. If there's no outlet for this overproduction of stress hormones the body will start to burn itself up and grind itself down. People who say panic attacks and anxiety can't hurt you are full of it because overproduction of cortisol with a weak body will kill you slowly. I personally felt it in my heart where I'd always have papitations and a cold feeling around my heart area that feels like my heart was being overworked and eaten away by something bad like battery acid. I knew it was the corisol going through my heart and causing some sort of damage not only that but my blood pressure was sky high. After I started excercising vigorously I noticed this cold feeling stopped, my heart stopped having the palpitations, and my blood pressure went back down and my whole system changed. So if nothing else changes in your mind with regards to the OCD and anxiety at least excercise will help your body hold up and withstand the intense stress of this disorder.

Nope I didn't have a bad reaction to the meds but people shouldn't take them unless nothing they do naturally first works. If modifying your diet and excercise along with taking natural supplements dont help you get better on your own after a while and you don't see any other possibility then of course you should try medication.

Ya I think bmk is in good shape and watches what he eats. If your gonna try the lexapro best of luck with that as it does help alot of people. But just so u know theres some natural serotonin boosters out there and theres also some ne wthing out there called amoryn thats worth looking into, its natural uses a pretty low dose of 5htp and a certain extract (the active ingredient) thats most health stores leave out of there sjw formula (dont ask me why.)
Best of luck guys thanks for answering my post. Hey frank how bad shape were u in at your worst as I am a smoker eat alot of unhealthy stuff here is my new plan for the next week. I am finisheing my last cigarette today as I just read about fasting as a great way to clean toxins out of the body, as well as biblical reference to spiritual health. So as of tommorow i prepare my body for the fast by eating only moderate doses of frozen fruit and juice and water with lemon (2 days of that) Then I am going to do 3 days with only water with lemon, and maybe a final day of eating fruit again. Some people fast for way longer but I am trying to be realistic cuz even those limited number of days should be really hard. Once I resume diet, I will try my best to eat right and I just received my billy blanks bootcamp which I didnt even last 5 minutes. I will still continue to what supplements I can on this fast and hope for the best afterwards. This will be a test of my will power.
I think they edited my post. The sjw was st johns wort and the active ingredient in it is hyperforin which most health store versions of sjw dont work. the natural stuff is called amoryn, look into it.

I wouldn't say I was in too bad a shape about 25lbs overweight and I never excercised. Even walking up a flight of stairs would wear me out and this was prior to my depression/ocd. I didn't smoke or drink but I did eat lots of junk nonstop. Burgers, sodas, sweets, chips, various preserved foods etc.. I changed my diet by stopping all the junk and only ate healthy and drank lots of water. I'd recommend a good water filter and air filter for your house as well. If I were you I wouldn't start too strict a diet regimen as it'll be harder to stick with it. I'd go slowly and start by only cutting out half the stuff at first and working your way up from there. Excercise moderately too maybe just twice a week to start then keep adding the intensity duration and amt of days as you feel yourself getting stronger. Your body will naturally tell you when you can take it up a notch. Take the supplements as well like b-complex and vitamin c but If there's one supplement I recommend over all the others it's the Omega3. I think it truely helped speed me along a lot!
No matter what though, you shouldn't over do any of this and let it change slowly over time with both the excercise and diet and let this be your new way of life over time. I wouldn't rely too much on willpower and I wouldn't try to go all balistic with the Billy Banks stuff. Slow but steady is the only thing that'll make it stick. It would also help to consult a nutritionist or some kind of holistic health practitioner to see what tips they can give you as well. Good Luck!
