Even if the infection was mild (it sounds severe to me) you would still need antibiotics to treat it. More doctors, for good reason, are trying to limit writing prescriptions for antibiotics. Antibiotics have been abused by doctors and patients alike and the CDC is encouraging them to be more careful. However, when you have a legitamate need for an antibiotic, you need to get it. If you can't convince your dentist, then find another one. He says it's an infection. If it is, gargling with salt water will not 'cure' it. I'm all too familiar with dental pain and infections so my heart really goes out to you. I don't know of any pain worse than that. You need an antibiotic. Please keep me posted.

i never heard any such thing. everytime i have had a tooth pulled or just an infection my dentist has always prescribed penicillin. last one i had pulled the oral surgeon said it wasn't infected so i didn't neeed an antibiotic. 2 days later i was on the phone because the pain was horrible. gave me penicillin and with 24 hours i had relief.

I'd get a second opinion, or go to your doctor and explain situation see if they can help and write you a prescription:)
Good luck!

I agree with everyone above. You should have been given antibiotics. From your description it seems that it is a pretty bad one and it will only get worse without antibiotics. Call your dentist and demand some or call a new dentist and get some from there. Infections are something that you want to mess around with.
