Considering seeing a dietician. Has anyone seen a nutritionist/dietician? I'm wanting to lose 15 pounds permanently!! Needing advice on exercize & eating the right foods/as well as amounts of food

I am going to college to be a dietician, i cannot help you as of this point! I absolutely believe that one can permanently help you in your goal! Best of luck to you!!!

I believe they can be of help...provided you find someone that is well trained and educated.

I went to one last summer because I had gained lots of weight after my first year of university and it was discovered I had high cholesterol. I eat pretty healthy already but I thought I'd give it a shot since the apointment was free (because of OHIP). To tell you the truth, the hour or so I spent with the woman was a complete waste of time. I already knew everything she told me. She handed me some papers to read -one which was sponsered by Becel butter!! I flipped through the booklet by Becel and couldn't believe all the unhealthy foods that was being promoted as healthy. The booklet said to eat as much as 90grams of fat for men or 60 grams for woman...dude, there is no way I am about to eat that much FAT! The only thing that was interesting was the paper she gave me that showed a sample of a person's meal plan. But other than that, I was hoping she would help me with my chloresterol problem. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif Needless to say I never went back...

I have tweaked my eating habits on my own, and have started to exercise as well. My chloresterol has gone down, and my midsection has lost 4 inches. I'm still hoping to lose about another 30lbs...

I know my run in with a dietician is probably different than most. I think they are a good idea though, especially if you feel you lack the knowledge concerning nutrition.

It is too bad that you think your experience with the dietican was a bad one. Except for the suggestion that you use margarine (Becel), she was on the money. We are told over and over again not to eat any fat, but we need fats for many reasons, they provide nutrients (enzymes) that are essential that man made foods do not contain.

Consuming products with transfatty ingredients are going to cause your cholesterol to go up, stay away from all margarines they are not natural just man-made
(you might as well be eating plastic). The best diet is to get back to the basics and eat whole foods again. Nothing processed or refinded. Stay away from man-made foods, just because they are low in fat doesn't mean that the body can digest them and that they are good for you. Look at cool whip for example. It is all man made, nothing that grew in the earth or roamed the earth. It really is quite scary. The problem is that we don't eat enough fat. Weston Price looked into nutrition in different countries and compared diseases, you might want to look his info up on the web, you might be surprised. I know I was. I totally changed the way I look at food. All I eat is whole foods and I am feeling sooooo much better because of it.

Hey girlygirly, it is too bad that my experience wasn't all that great. Perhaps I expected too much. Anyway, I no longer eat margarine and I don't eat many processed foods because I'm paranoid about the stuff that they put in them. Like you said, if it doesn't grow somewhere I pretty much stay away from it. I think alot of my chloresterol (I should probably learn how to spell the word LOL) problem is the fact that it runs in my family and the weight gain. I'm 21 now, and hoping that with a bit more weight loss my tests will be good.

In the days BI (before internet) a dietician was great source of valuable information on nutrition. Now with the advent of the information superhighway their value is even greater because they can offer a personalized approach to weight management.

I had regular appointments with a dietician while on a reduced calorie program and the input I received proved to be the exact thing I needed to perservere throught the program.

Like any other profession, you will find extraordinarily good and bad ones so shop around.
