Hi Linderella:
Congrats on your weight loss. Can you share with us exactly what you ate to total 1200 calories a day and at what time of day you consumed them? I too am a night time eater, so I am intrigued by your plan. Thanks, D-

I ate whatever I wanted....
Basically, I came to the conclusion that to lose weight all I needed to do is quit eating so much. It's the basis for any diet.
I had never had a weight problem. I'm 43 years old and had always been a relatively normal weight, around 130lbs or under at 5'5". I gained 30 pounds in about 3 years after I got a computer. At my most I weighed 156 ( I also weighted 156 when I was 20 years old and 9 months pregnant!!!). When I couldn't button a pair of size 34 waist jeans that my husband wears, I knew it was time to do something about it.
I also know that I'd never exercise. I'm one of those people who is all gung-ho about something at first, but after a bit, I get sick of it and quit.. So I realized right off the bat that if I used exercise to lose weight that I'd gain it all back if I quit exercising so I didn't even bother. I'd be one of those people who use their treadmill to hang their dirty clothes on. :D Also, lets face it, it's just too much to change every single thing about your life all at once.
I've never ate breakfast my entire life. Skipping breakfast is no problem. Eating out of boredom is my problem. When I get up I drink coffee with cream and drink it all day long. I've always done this. If I was starving before dinner I'd occasionally have a cup-a-soup or half a peanut butter sandwich around lunchtime, but it was rare. I used www.fitday.com (http://www.fitday.com) to keep track of calories.
I ate dinner, which consisted of anything I cooked for my family. Spaghetti, Pork chops, chicken, casserole, anything really. We eat dinner around 5pm. Then I ate whatever I wanted until I went to bed. Cake, cookies, snacks, fruit, candy etc. The key was to only eat 1200 calories. It never mattered to me as long as I stopped at 1200 calories.
What I did was to add my dinner to fitday then see how many calories I had left to play with. Even eating alot of dinner seldom put me over 500. The cream in my coffee was about 120 calories a day. So, after dinner I'd generally have about 600 calories to play with. Seriously I ate anything I wanted that would equal the other 600 calories. I tried to eat lower calorie foods just because I could eat more. I didn't do this everyday though. Sometimes I'd eat a Snickers, chips and icecream. The ticket to me was just never go over 1200 calories no matter what.

May 5th-147
June 5th-141
July 5th-136
August 5th-134
Sept 5th-130
Above is what fitday says. Since Sept 5th I've only used fitday sporadically as I was just trying to get to 130. I now weight 124. I lose on average about a pound a month now. It's the other major changes I've made that keeps me losing I think. I don't count calories anymore.
The other major changes that I've permanently made in my eating are:
1) NEVER EVER EVER eat at the computer. This was the very first change I made.
2) NEVER eat more than the serving size of anything. Reflecting on my weightloss, I believe that this one thing alone would have led me to lose all the weight that I needed to lose. It is my number one tip. Just do this one thing forever and you'd be amazed at how much you could lose.
3) I seldom eat out. I've had fast food only a handfull of times in the last year. When I do, it's just a hamburger and small fries (One Whooper in the last year). At sit down restaurants, I eat whatever I want but don't eat anything the rest of the day.
4) NEVER drink anything with sugar. I only drink diet drinks. Crystal lite, diet soda, diet V-8 splash, coffee, tea etc. I never drink water, yuck....
I weigh myself about every 3-4 days. I'm still losing just by making these other changes. When or if I get to 120lbs I'll start eating more as I think that less than 120 would be too thin for me. I was happy at 130. The other 6 lbs have been a bonus.
You can do it. Just do the one thing--eat only the serving size of everything. I'd guess if you did just this one simple thing, you'd lose slow but sure and be able to keep it off forever.
Good luck to you. I'm sure this isn't for everyone nor is it nutritionally balanced. But here I am weighing 124 in a size 8 pants. It's cool.
Here is a good website for lower calorie snacks that I use.

OMG Lind.......there is another you in the world...it's me! I am a 41 year old mom of 3 who is at the 150 mark and look so much better at 135. I am a Weight Watcher drop out. I lost weight there many times and have never kept it off.
I love my coffee with 1/2 & 1/2. I hate water and only drink the diet soads and crytal light too.
I always eat out of boredom. I am a model citizen, then the kids are in bed and it's my nighttime eating that puts me over the top.
I hate to exercise and won't. Period.
I Love pizza...how can I squeeze that in? I am a cookie queen, and a sleeve of chips ahoy has been a serving size lately.
I applaud you for finding something that works for you and knowing your own body. As a said, I think I could live with this plan, cause you sound so much like me! Thank you much for responding. I will visit the fitday site for some direction and start to pay attention to those calories, instead of weight watcher points. And you are right...we all just need to eat less, and stop "super sizing' everything. Be well and thanks! D-

Haha, I hear you about the sleeve of chips ahoy. Why can't a sleeve be a serving? :D
I tried a couple half-hearted attempts at dieting earlier. I tried doing it the "right" way, by eating 3 squares a day. I never lasted more than 3 or 4 days. Just like you, I'd blow it at night every time. Then I just started realizing how dumb it was for me to eat breakfast as I wasn't even hungry. I was just forcing myself so I wouldn't be hungry later and it never worked. So I thought, heck why not move these calories to nighttime when I DO want to eat? So I did. I DO NOT want to gain this back so I needed and did things that I could live with.
I tried really hard not to eat pizza and cookies. Those two things have so many calories compared to everything else. I do eat pizza. Maybe once a month.
Hey, a regular Tombstone with sausage only has 1450 calories for the whole pizza. So I'd eat half for dinner, it's only 725 cals. :D You could do this every day if you wanted!! Eat it all but one piece...
In December, I make Christmas cookies. For 2 days in December, all I ate for 2 entire days was cookies. Nothing else. Heck it won't kill me to do this once a year.
Another thing that helped me at first was to put snacks in baggies to assist in only eating the serving size. For example, if you take a whole sleeve of cookies with you into another room, you'll eat more than a serving. I'd split them up into baggies and put one serving in each baggie. It was much easier to keep myself from eating them all. I did this with anything that's too easy to eat alot of or to just grab a handful of, like pretzels, M&M's, chips, etc. Never take the whole bag of anything with you into another room. ;)
When I grocery shop, I stop before I get to the checkout and think about my purchases. Do I really want to buy that box of sesame sticks since I'm the only one in the house who will eat them and eat them ALL? I put alot of stuff back.
Eating the serving size really has gotten to be a part of my life. I don't think about how much I want to eat it all. I try and think about how cool it is that I can still have what I want, just not tons of it.
I keep a before and after picture of me on my fridge along with a picture of Britney Spears. I don't look like Britney and never will, but it motivates me none the less. I take a multi-vitamin with iron.
April 5th it will be one year. Seems like a long time but heck, at our age it also seems like just yesterday...hehe I thought when I started that losing just takes too long but then I thought, if I don't do this, by next year this time I'll still be just as fat or fatter.
I can't sing the praises of fitday enough. No matter what type of diet you use, it helps so much. It's very easy to use and free. When you see those tables and charts heading down instead of up, it's such a motivator. Sorry to ramble. Good luck.

Lin,
Many thanks for your informative reply. I love your baggie idea of splitting snacks into serving sizes. Once again congratulations on your size 8 pants.....I have them too...they're just buried behind the 14's. Enjoy your spring and your body, and thanks again. D-

Lind-I have a question did you just watch til you hit 1200 calories or did you watch the other things too? Like carb's, fat's,sat's?????As it shows on fitday.
And if so what did you allow yourself on those?
Thanks again

I agree. You have to know yourself. One thing I know I like to do, is ramble on forever in web boards. This is my first trip to this site though!
So, to me, taking up the habit of talking about diets would help me stick to it.
I agree with you about the central element of dieting. Eat less. Its that simple, and also that hard too.
I am usually slightly overweight, though I have been skinny, and also way too fat. I am 5'11" and one time I got up to 250lbs...depression, I guess.
Understanding what a 'serving' is, was difficult. Because there is the natural serving...one bottle of soda, I assume to be one serving, but look on the back, and its two. Whereas, a can of soda, 12 oz, is now one serving..(you know I think that changed, it used to be two also)....but someone please tell the airlines, they still think they can split a can into two servings....cheap !@#$@#, but I digress.
What I came to say today, is something controversial, but I have embraced the yo-yo diet, it works for me. The key is just to stay around my ideal weight...and never stray too much. Getting down to the weight is the hard thing, but after that, I just let my weight go up and down, until it gets to a certain upper boundary...then I go on a diet binge. My limit is 200lbs.
I crack down, I over exercise, I stop eating, I start taking caffeine and diet pills like metabolife. You see, I have to be active action about things... I can't just have some impossibly subtle 'lifestyle' change.
After I have moved my weight back down to normal, then I just start the yo-yo again. As long as I never reach 200 lbs then I never really feel fat.
For me, anywhere between 160lb and 200lb is fine...that 200lb mark triggers a dieting binge, and soon I am back down to acceptable.
I'm sure its crazy, but it works well for me...I was never happy about my weight until I rejected all the advice of health experts. I yo-yo, but I never fear getting vastly overweight again...I like looking at my photo's. Life is good.
as it happens my wife is barely a size one...I would prefer to be forever skinny, I think...as a couple we look the best when we are both that skinny... its not in the cards for me, and she never complains, even when I reach 201lbs...but she also never complains about my decision to diet when I reach that point.

oh btw, decided to reply to my own post....
but on the subject of my post, :0) ppl never understand what my wife's weight has to do with anything.
but she barely weigh's 100lbs and her weight doesn't fluctuate...I have a psychological barrier to being over twice her weight.
Sorry, but I can't do it, I can accept, embrace, even enjoy the fact that men are usually bigger than women, but being twice in size, is just bizarre. It cartoon character, magic kingdom type proportions.
I don't want to be the beast to her beauty, the mutt to her jeff, the laurel to her hardy, is that so hard to understand. is it? IS IT???
hehe, now, see, the ephedra is making me ramble, so please forgive me. But even when I'm not rambling on like a psychotic, I have always felt this way.
And I don't really understand why I am seemingly unique in this respect....doesn't anyone think in terms of how they look as a couple? or am I the only one who somehow didn't get the bulletin about independent thinking....

Yes I do use fitday daily...And it has helped me drop 10 pds myself.... :) 4-1 to 4-11 Plus the weather is so much better now around here and I can get out of the house and do yard work which I do daily, Ughhh leaf's I have those thing now..LoL.....And I am taking Zantrex-3, 2 pills a day not 6.And doing tae-bo 15 to 20 minutes a day.
See what I do is I get up see what "I want" :)
to eat whatever I feel like that day, and see where and how my calories are.Add it all in and at the end of the day I go back and take away what I didnt eat or add what I did eat that wasn't on my list...
Like today I wanted some sweet tea, I havent had a glass since I started, well I looked up 8 oz and it wasnt that much that was my treat for the day...It's really cool to do and easy.I even take stuff like a low-fat tv dinner and add it and it stays on the custom list,I was shocked like tonight I am only at 935 calories for the day...So I just may make that 1/2 pot of coffee I have wanted all day.. :)
Carbs are my biggest down fall, BUT I was told they make a carb blocker. So tomorrow at Wally World I am going to look at it.Then I won't feel so bad when I have my coffee with sugar.
Plus with nice weather I am grlling everything now.No fried foods since the 1st.More salads, fruits and tons of water.I went from 0 water a day to at least a gallon a day.
Good Luck and stay with it, we made it thru the hardest part and it feels great!
Dee

HI everybody. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.
Southern-mom, first, congrats on your weightloss. Woohoo!! :) To answer your question about carbs fats etc--no I didn't watch any of them. I just ate 1200 calories no matter what. I tried to eat lower calorie things because I could eat more. Calories are all that matter to me. That fitday is cool isn't it? I love it. Do you use splenda? I drink cinnamon tea at night with spenda. It rocks and no calories. You could use it in your coffee too if you like it.
Mark--good for you for finding a way. I had a sister-in-law that used a system somewhat like yours. She never wanted to weigh more than 125 and when she'd get to 126 she'd go for one whole day a week and not eat anything at all. She'd do that until she got back under 125. Worked for her as she's still thin after years of doing this. I don't think I could do that, but whatever works I ain't knocking.
Good luck everyone. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Linda...This helps to know that someone else has done this before and won.I did NOT have that coffee last night I was so tired, as you seen I had to make 2 edits on my post..LoL....But I did make some this morning.I spent 4 hours with hubby and kids on the lake.I was tired..
They got up again at 5am to go back out and I didn't crawl back in bed. :).It's a little to chilly for me to go right now.
I will look for Splenda today at the store I have heard about it but never used it.
I am really lucky my husband is all for this, if this is what I want.He loves me any shape. All he ask is that I don't get to skinny.. :)
My boys are the greatest, they ask me is that diet food your eating,lol..I tell them no its just momma cooks it in a more healthy way. They love my grilled salmon.Which they passed up steaks last night for salmon.I am doing the serving size also. Its not less food than I thought it would be.I even caught my oldest placing his mix-salad in a measuring cup..LoL...
Thanks and have a nice day :)

I'm still doing ok too. I weigh 122 today. On April 5th it was a year since I started. I had a chocolate eclair to celebrate. It was the best darn donut I ever had in my life. :D
I don't consider myself out of the woods yet. I've still got to maintain this or it all would be for nothing. Food is still an issue in that I have to think about what food choices I make. I come here and it helps to keep me focused. It's kind of a bummer to have to think about food all the time but at the same time, when I was heavy, I thought about it anyway.
I still only eat serving sizes of everything. I'm sure I'm eating more than 1200 now. If I'd guess, I'm probably eating around 1300-1400 cals a day. I still only eat at night with an occasional cup a soup or half a sandwich at lunchtime if I'm starving. I've gotten used to it and it's not been that hard so far to maintain. Sure, every now and then I want to just pig out but I don't. Even if I did, I could go right back to watching it. Let's face it, one day of pigging out isn't going to make or break any diet.
It's good that your husband is supportive. Mine is too. He didn't care that I gained weight and seems pleased that I lost it as it makes me happy. I'm sure he got sick of listening to me talk about calories but he survived. He tells all the woman he works with how to diet now. Bet they love that. ;)
I'm glad you're doing so good. Keep on using the fitday and don't cheat it ;) The charts there are pretty cool. It's a good motivator to see actual charts going down. I think it also gives you more of a clear picture of where calories are coming from. I eat alot of carbs I found and not nearly enough fiber. I don't care though.
Give the Splenda a go. It would allow you to drink as much coffee and tea with sugar as you wanted with NO calories. Dietrite brand soft drinks are the only soda I found that is sweetened with spenda. They taste a little better than other diet pop. The tangerine flavor rocks. I pour some in a glass and add a 1/2 cup of lowfat ice cream for a tasty orange dreamsicle float that only has 90 calories. I make rootbeer floats too. Diet V-8 splash is sweetened with splenda also. It's only 10 calories a glass and it's pretty good.
Now, like you, smoking is my next big issue. I'm not ready to give this up yet. I'm afraid I'd gain weight. :D But heck, I have more willpower in me than I ever imagined. I really didn't think I had any. I think this smoking thing is going to be much harder. Heck, at least with a diet you can have SOME food. With smoking there is no cheating.
I'm rambling...Keep up the good work. Keep us posted on your progress. Time flies and before you know it, you'll be pulling your old pants off without even unzipping them

Thanks for your message it made my day and made me laugh.
I can say I have not cheated.(yet)
You had to bring up chocolate eclairs.I am not a sweets person but when my time comes(mthly)that is what I want.I haven't had one since Dec, so I am not about to give in now.I hope :)
I did get the splenda and hey I like this stuff. So now I will allow myself to have a extra cup of coffee when I want...hehehe
My husband I cant say enough about him other than I know I am truely blessed with this man.Well I could say I did start dating him when he was 16 and trained him right...LOL
But tonight we were standing outside and he said you know today at wally world when you where picking out some new pants, I saw the smile on your face.I got myself a new pair of capris size 12 not a 14/16..For my first 10 pds.
I asked him why he never said a word when he saw the weight going on and on.Other than saying first of all I like living, lol,he said I knew you would do something when you were ready and that day you came back for the doc's mad and said all you said,I knew then you would do something and if you didn't he said I would still love you and find you just as beautiful.I hate when he does that crap.
Then to top that line off he said what bothered me more than the weight was hearing you cry in the bathroom about it...
Makes ya sick doesn't it.....LOL
He is a good one and I know with his help and support on here I can do this.
Well I am tired, another day on the lake.I did get some sun, so now it's not my white legs blinding the fish..(haha)
Have a good night.

Hello and Congrats! You finally figured it out. There is a way you can have pizza. There's even a pizza diet. I found out that if you make your own pizza at home, it has less fat, less sodium, and less cals. in it. Those pre-made pizzas and restaurant pizzas are loaded with oil and MSG. It's really not that hard to make your own pizza. You can buy the pizza shells or go onto the Fleischman's yeast website, where you will find a recipe for a 10 min. pizza crust. Also, bread machines make the best Cecilian pizza. Just try to keep it to 1-2 slices and not half the pie like I used to eat when I was younger.

I certainly do not mean to offend anyone here. But since this is on the nutrition site and this is far from being nutritious I have to offer an alternative.
This is a diet that promotes- no exercise, no breakfast, all diet drinks, NO water, coffee all-day, cookies only for 2 days a year, snickers, icecream, chips, tombstone pizza, cakes, cookies, snacks, fruits, M &M's, pretzels, and candy. This diet will wreak havoc on your body.
You must drink at least 8 8oz glasses of water per day. Plus you have to make-up for the cups of coffee that are dehydrating you. How about instead of diet drinks seltzer with fresh squeezed juice added to it? A much healthier choice and will taste alot better too. There are alot of processed foods filled with additives here, how about more whole foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains. Where is the fiber in the other diet? Fiber is essential. Where is the protein? Many crucial items for good body health are missing here.
The diet that has been posted and requested will slowly kill you. Good Luck.

I have to agree with you girlygirl, this is not a healthy lifestyle.... sure, it may help you lose weight (why, i don't know) but you couldn't possibly get enough nutrients in nothing but coffee, dinner and junk food all day.
and the advice about someone who goes 1 pound overweight and then starves herself for an entire day to lose it?? pathetic... don't post stuff like that, its never good advice, and to go all day without eating... that's never healthy.

Or ....how about we remember this is a "weight loss" board and differant people lose weight in differants ways. If this works for Linderella ...good for her. Most diets are considered "unhealthy" ...it doesn't actually mean that they are. If we want to start criticizing other people's diets ....well, then criticise them all. ....Atkins, is not healthy, diet pills are not healthy, most supplements are not healthy, frozen dinners such as healthy choice and lean cuisine, are actually not healthy.
But hey .....once again ....who are WE to criticize what works for other people.
It really angers me when I read posts like the two above.

The last time I looked at this board it was titled diet and nutrition, not weight loss. I would not have even commented on this "diet" if it was on the weight loss board as every crazy type of diet is on it. I only offered an alternative to anyone reading this because NUTRITION is missing from this. And no, not all diets are unhealthy. Eating whole foods and nonprocessed foods as I stated in my earlier post is very healthy. Diet is not always about "dieting", it can be about a change in eating habits for the rest of your life, for your health which includes control of your weight as well.

girly,
have you actually searched through this board? There are all kinds of "diets" posted here as well as the weight loss board. Not only are diets listed here, but also questions/comments regarding diet pills with and without ephedra, fad diets, unhealthy diets, weight loss tips, and yes ....lifestyle changes.
I'm glad you are able to lose weight by following an exact, healthy lifestyle, but alot of people are not able to. Me, being one of them.
I'm merely saying that alot of "diets" ...hence, the boards name "diet AND nutrition" while may not be considered healthy or may even be controversial to some, work for others and do not cause them any health problems.
If this works for Linderella, I say good for her.

I have to side with girly here. She has a right to express her opinion, the same way everyone here does. She is just telling it like it is.
It works for Lindarella. A 1200 cal diet will work for virtually anyone with a normally functioning body. It's all about how many calories per day you take in. Lind. DID say she is making healthier choices so she has more to eat--right on! I always say, think about your food budget like it is money--get the most you can for what you have to spend!
I don't necessarily agree with once a day eating, but if it works for her, great. And spending 2 days a year eating cookies? Bleah! I think I would get sick of cookies, but again, she wants to do it that way.
May not be the healthiest way of eating, but most intelligent folks can make up there own minds. I don't mind reading posts on this board expressing other opinions, it's how we learn, and we are free to do so.

I agree ...but to say stuff like "it will slowly kill you" or "don't post that stuff here" and "pathetic" that just wasn't nice.
I agree on the cookie thing, however !! ...But I will say, I broke down and ate a hamburger at McDonald's yesterday ...(I know ...yuck), so when I added my calories before dinner .....I'm sure you can imagine.
I made dinner for the family and had a raw spincahe salad !!! ...I wasn't starving, just starving for something food to eat !!!

Linderella has a right to post how she lost her weight. I'm sure it benefited many people (myself as one). Before reading her post I was basically doing the same plan but I wasn't sure if it was going to work or not. Her post answered my questions.
If you don't like how she did it then don't read it. Personally I agree with her plan because you are aloowing yourself to have the pasta at dinner with a dessert instead of restricting yourself so much that one day you just want to binge and you do. Everyone's body is different just like everyones opinions.

My sister-in-law is on a 1200 calorie intake a day. It really works and she has lost alot of weight. I have been on the same for about 5 years now. I really do not have to worry about my weight, but I still stick by it. It is healthier that way, :)

Congratulations on everyone's weight loss! :)
I am 5'5" and was 156, also!!!! That was on April 11, 2003. I am now down to 130 and loving it. I am still trying to loose 5 more pounds, but I have not been very motivated lately. I am wearing a size 6, so the motivation to get skinnier is hard to find.
I find it unfortunate that a success story in weight loss (whether the methods are universally agreed-upon or nor) was met with such hostility.
