Hello all, i am starting the atkins answer diet and was wondering about foods to eat. IT says to stay away from carbs and have max 20grams a day. In the book that comes with the package it says for breakfast many different combos but all with eggs. I have somewhat high cholestrol and should prob stay away from eggs but all the breakfast examples are with eggs. ANyone know what else you can have? ALso is it alright to eat eggs every day or several times a week? THanks for the help,

If you are doing the Atkin's diet, you don't have to eat just eggs for breakfast. However, if you like eggs, then I suggest getting egg substitutes or else just eat the whites of the eggs. Just to let you know, eggs are the perfect food, especially if they are boiled.
If you have high cholestrol, this diet probably isn't the best idea. You are eating mainly high fat foods and protein. You can also checkout Atkins.com, they have some cooking ideas and so forth.
As far as breakfast food, you can eat anything such as meat, cheese, nuts, and veggies. You don't have to eat just eggs, they just suggest that since it's a common breakfast food. I would really try eating the egg substitutes or just the whites of the eggs.

Contrary to what fit4life told you, Atkins and other low carb plans are excellent for heart disease and cholesterol control. Dietary fat has little to no effect on your circulatory system, if any it is good if the fats are balanced.

i'm not a fan of atkins because i don't consider it balanced. eliminating complete food groups is bad in my eyes, but for the record, cholestrol is from animal products (meat and dairy). eating protein and high fat does not necessarily mean high cholestrol. for example, eggwhites are 100% protein but don't have any cholestrol (the yolk does). olive oil is 100% fat but does not contain cholestrol since it is not animal based.

I hope it might be reassuring to you to know that all the studies of Atkins and cholesterol so far, including several quite thorough reviews by non-fans of Atkins, show that the diet lowers cholesterol and particularly LDLs'.
It may be counterintuitive, it may be counter to everything you've heard, or to everything the researchers expected when the studies began, but there it is. Maybe it's a sign of how complex human biology is. Apparently, the insulin and other hormonal reactions to carb intake have much more to do with our blood fat levels than does the fat we eat.
As you probably know, no matter what your diet, MOST of your cholesterol is manufactured in your body. Controlling the liver's cholesterol factory might be the real key to reducing blood fats, and the carb/insulin feedback loop may be much more critical to this process than we knew in the past.
Whatever the reason, if you follow Atkings for a month or two, eggs and all, and then go back to your doc for blood tests, you may be pleasantly surprised. If not, if it doesn't work this way for you, go off the diet to something else, but I assure you that at least your weight loss will do more for your heart health than almost anything else you might have done for these few weeks, anyway.
I've been on my own modified Atkings diet for several years now, and have low cholesterol, especially LDL's. I eat eggs virtually every morning. Just one man's experience.
Good luck

I, too, have considered Atkins but I'm afraid of the
effects of a high protein diet on the body. My dad
has lost 77 pounds since January on Atkins. He strongly believes in it. But it goes against everything we've ever been told about eating a balanced diet. I've researched it a lot, and I've never
found a health article that is against it. Anyone had a bad experience with Atkins?

My dr was on the atkins diet and I know a few other people. try to stay at 15 grams of carbs a day. I also have high cholestorol and the egg beaters are great. no cholestorol in them. I microwave them. they are then scrambled and I will have a couple pieces of bacon or a piece of sausage with it. no cholestorol at all.
the reduction in carbs according to the people I know and my dr will reduce your cholestorol.
you can use the egg beaters, make an omelet , put in ham cheese, green onions. anything you want but no tomatoes. Found a great website to give you some ideas. www.cindyscorner.com/getstarted.html. (http://www.cindyscorner.com/getstarted.html.) this site is from a girl that lost a lot of weight and has some great ideas . hope it helps and good luck. Im trying to follow it a bit. not fully into it yet but want to go and buy the book. also on the internet put in the words carb counter and it gives you lists of foods and how much carbs are in them. keep us posted.
If you cant get into this website as is just put in the word Cindys corner. she has pictures of herself befor and after the diet. she looks great. as I said my dr said the cutting carbs will lower the cholestorol. I was speaking to a guy on sat and he lost 40 lbs. choles dropped by 50 he couldnt wait to get his bloodwork done as he lost another 20 lbs.

Now is the 15 grams a day for all the time? Or is that just for the first stage of the diet....the 2 first weeks or something like that?

I am currently on the atkins diet and am experiencing weight loss. Everyone I know that is on it and really conscientious about the grams of carbs has lost weight and their chlestoral as well as triglycerides etc have gone down. One friend is now off of insulin because the diet has controlled his blood sugar so successfully. The only hard part of the diet in the beginning is not being able to eat breads, grains, but after a couple of weeks you can up the carb count by about 5 grams each week or so as long as you are still losing weight. Good luck!

I have been on the Atkins for about a year and half now. I lost just over 140 lbs. on it. Started out at 340, and am now down to 198.
It's a mixture of the diet and an exercise program that's made it successful for me.
I miss pizza and fries, but as long as I'm eating regularly I'm O.K.
My blood pressure has now dropped to a normal range, and my cholesterol is normal too. The number one thing I have noticed is my energy level has increased, and I don't sleep 7 or 8 eight hours a day. It's more like 5 - 6 hours.
I really am looking to lose another 25 - 35. It may be a pipe dream but I'm gonna try anyways.

a year and half is a long time. have u had any drawbacks and what is a sample menu like for you?
im curious if you are now following a "modified" atkins, which is what i usually hear from success stories.

Hi Chops
I've been following a "modified" Atkins plan for more than four years. Most people find they can modify the diet as they learn its principles and see how it interacts with their body.
It is not simple arithmetic, as we were told the caloric approach was supposed to be--x calories in, y calories expended, z pounds lost. We now know that this does not work for the caloric approach, either, but this simple model was never proposed for Atkins in the first place.
What he designed was an approach to controlling the insulin reactions in our bodies (or as we are now learning, the insulin/leptin/glucagon interactions). By consciously manipulating insulin levels through carb management, we can--most of us--shut down or moderate greatly the fat storage process. However, everyone's endocrine system is different, and how we each react to different menus is different, and we each learn to adjust accordingly. some folks can eat this level or that of carbs and do fine, some not. some can eat the Atkins candy bars and lose weight, some of us lose our intestinal well being, instead. And so on. Differnet strokes and all that.
I think that's why so many use a term like "modified" Atkins. He encouraged it anyway--thought we should add more and more varied foods as we approached our weight goals. Otherwise how would any of us stick to any discipline for year after year?
Hope this explains it.

So, what if MY favorite foods are the foods all the "experts" say are so bad (meats, eggs, cheeses)? Am I insane to eat what I like for the rest of my life? And, by the way, once I'm at my goal, I may have small portions of potatoes, rice, pasta, sweets and low-carb beer...but all in moderation. Isn't that how thin folks stay thin, anyway?
To generalize that "Atkins LifeStylers" or their eating habits are "insane" is like saying that all members of a particular religion squeeze blood from pennies or a certain ethnicity is stupid or a race of people are violent and not very open minded, particularly when there are no cultural studies that legitimize my three examples and countless case histories that refute yours.
There's an awful lot of "favorite" foods that can be enjoyed while still maintaining ACE. If you don't know what ACE is, you haven't read the material. If you haven't read the material...just a few more grains of salt I'll add to my delicious pork roast and horseradish sauce tonight...or my dozen Buffalo Wings (redhot sauce, not barbeque sauce) tomorrow night...or the three-egg hamburger cheese and sour cream omelet I enjoy every morning. Just think what I might eat when I only have to MAINTAIN, instead of lose, weight - YUM, YUM!

By the way, what I think is EXTREME (note that I avoided the word "insane") is Gastric Bypass surgery. To divert one's intake into a thumb-sized "stomach" and be allowed one to three small bites or sips at a time (or risk severe pain or vomitting) has got to be the mother of all last resorts.
Now THAT's a LIFETIME commitment!

I have been doing my modified Atkins' approach for eight months now, and I've lost 65 pounds. It is the easiest diet I've ever attempted and am happier and in better shape now than I have been in my entire life.
I've slowly added some carbohydrates back into my diet, but mostly in the form of soy and fruits. I probably eat about 40-50 grams of carbohydrates per day and exercise regularly. The weight stays off and I look great :)
I'd recommend this diet to everyone and anyone. My cholesterol went down incredibly, and ever since I started running, my blood pressure has dropped and my pulse is at an all time low. My cardiologist says that my heart is incredibly strong and now recommends the high protein/fats diet to runners in his care. Also, most of my family members and friends are on Atkins' due to my incredible lifestyle change.
I am the Atkins' poster child. 18 years old, 5'10, 174 pounds, and running 6 miles a day. Even though the guy kicked the bucket a while back, he's still my hero.

I just wanted to chime in and give you guys alittle info on egg substitutes. Egg substitutes are mostly egg whites, however the yolk is replaced with other ingredients such as veg oil, skim milk powder and tofu (soy). Some have sodium, yellow food coloring, gum and msg. According to the Weston A. Price foundation "Egg substitutes caused rapid death in test animals". We all know how wonderful msg is for us.
Now for the skinny on eggs. For one they are natures perfect food. They provide vitamin A and D.They have important fatty acids that contribute to the health of the brain and the nervous system. I don't think you should eat eggs every day, but a few servings a week are very healthy for you unless you are cholesterol responding (which most of us aren't.)
By the way, way too go with all of the weight loss.

I think eggs are great to eat every day. Every morning I eat 3-4 of them boiled or scrambled with salsa.
They also make great lunch or dinner fillers. If all you have to eat in the house is some sausages or a slab of steak, why not hack up the sausage or steak and cook it with eggs?
In my experience, your diet has painfully little to do with your cholesterol. The majority of your cholesterol is produced in the liver, and your diet cannot affect that directly. So eat eggs all you please! Even the yolks! They are a gift from God!

Happy Carnivore,
Well Said!
I'll tell you what, I ate egg substitutes for a short period of time, until I started to get educated on nutrition and I will NEVER let them knowingly pass my lips again. I will not eat any man-made food again.
Whole foods are the answer to optimum good health.

Girlygirl and Carnivore know what's going on. I eat 5 or 6 eggs every morning and my b.p. and cholesterol are both low. I'm never hungry, I feel great and I am as fit as a fiddle. I do not intend to ever change the way I am eating right now. It is the way God intended for us to nourish our bodies and that is why it is so healthful. The government has killed more Americans with their food pyramid than automobiles and tobacco combined Generations have been doomed to obesity because of it. It is truly a shame that Dr. Atkins did not live long enough to see his name and brilliant WOE vindicated. In 25 years we will look back with horror on feeding our children cheetos and letting them wash it down with coke.

JohnnyReb,
Here, here! Keep speaking the truth! And don't let anyone tear down the Stars and Bars! (Born, raised and living in Wisconsin, I must have been kidnapped from Dixie at birth by a band of Polish Gypsies.)
So far, I've stuck to three eggs (meat/cheese omelet or with three strips of bacon) at breakfast, but I've gone days in a row with the three egg/three bacon for both breakfast AND LUNCH. Down 61.5 pounds as of this morning (and finally back under 200#, this time for LIFE), I've pretty much debunked all my skeptical friends and clients; even my best friend out at Microsoft started Atkins about the time I passed him by at about 230 pounds!!!
Wish I was in the land of cotton, we never let our meat get rotten...
