What am I doing wrong? I am very sad, ready to just give up. I have just 11lbs. I need to lose, and this is just not working for me. I live off of canandian bacon, eggs, steak, cheese, macadamia nuts and an occasional Atkins protein bar. I am not losing,if anything I may have gained a couple of ponds. Please anyone, give me typical days menu that has worked for you.

A protein diet is the WORST way to lose weight! You need to do it the healthy way. Lots of fruits and veggies everyday! This may sound a little extreme, but I vary really eat meat or dairy, maybe once a week at most as a treat. Lots of fish and beans and soy for protein. AND whole wheat bread, pasta and rice! You should have some fruit, veggie, healthy protein and whole wheat at every meal if possible. Never eat less than 1200 calories a day. Drink tons of water!! I drink rice milk everyday~ yum! It has just as much calcium as milk. Fiber is your friend- shoot for about 25 grams a day if you can. (Apples have about 5 grams of fiber) It really fills you up and is super healthy.
I am 5'9 and 130 pounds. This diet helped me lose 35 pounds and have kept it off for 4 years. Good luck!

How much cheese are you eating, southern? Too much slows weight loss in quite a few people.
You don't mention any veggies, was than an oversight?

A high protein diet is not the worst--the research says its very effective and protective of non-fat tissue and organs.
BUT, if you want to do things this way, don't just dive in. It is worth getting the Atkins books, or Protein Power, or like that to learn how to do it right.
Still, I understand that no diet works for everyone, and you mayhave to try more than one form of eating regimen to find the one that suits you best. I think, though, that if you study up a bit, you may find a high protein diet works for you, as it has for me and many others.

Last time it was that living on an Atkins Lifestyle menu for the rest of one's life is "INSANE."
A little meat in the diet goes a long way to accepting others' choices!

Thank you to all who have replied to me. Someone asked me to post a typical menu to see what I am doing wrong. breakfast-2 slices of canadian bacon and 2 eggs fried in pam.(fat free milk in coffee) lunch- Atkins protein bar or protein drink . dinner-grilled steak and small salad. night snack- macadamia nuts ot small cup of Atkins ice cream. I have been doing this for several weeks and have not lost an ounce. I have done a ton of research on carbs, etc. so I know I am not going above my daily limit.I am very discouraged. I am 5'6 1/2 and weigh 138 (2 1/2 lbs.of that is saline in implants!)I am not really overweight,I just strongly desire to lose 8 or 9 lbs. Any help would be appreciated. yall are the best.

Two questions:
1) Are you testing to be positive ketosis?
2) What beverages are you drinking?

You need to go through induction the correct way. Milk and protein bars are not part of the 2 week induction foods. You seem to be eating a whole lot of "unnatural" low carb foods- the Atkins products in particular. They can cause stalls and even Dr. Atkins admits this.

I agree with linnybee. Instead of fat-free milk in your coffee, have cream. Atkins is not a low-fat diet. Have some real food for lunch (there are a bunch of low carb sites where you could get ideas of things that are quick to make; but if nothing else IMHO it would be better to get a fast-food burger and throw out the bun, rather than the bars/drinks). I don't remember seeing it in the book, but have read on another board that nuts also need to wait until after the induction phase. (I wonder about the ice cream, too, but know that people do the cheese cake during inductions so it is probably about the same thing.)
Little bits of carbs here; a little sugar alcohol here; and it could be keeping you out of ketosis.
Good luck!

Eating unlimited protein don't cause weight loss for everyone. You may be one of those people. Maybe you need to limit calories also. Or, maybe you would do better on a vegetarian diet, or a clean eating diet...it varies with everyone.
One questionable area I see in you posted diet is a lack of veggies, and an overabundance of processed food. I would drop the packaged Atkins products and concentrate on natural lean proteins and use fresh veggies as your sole source of carbs.

i think the milk and the small amt of carbs in the atkins stuff is kicking you out of ketosis. atkins is very strict on the amount of carbs u can have. i think its 20g per day. this can be more carbs than in a single banana! it's also hard on your body.
imo, excercise and a balanced diet is the way to go for a sustained /perm weight loss. ppl who lost weight on atkins usually gain it all back.

I have heard that some people who have little weigh to loose don't do as well on Atkins.
I did a modified version of Atkins as prescribed by a nutritionist: 3 servings of protien/day (3 oz each); 2 servings of whole grains; 2 fats (dressings, peanut butter, ect); at least 5 veggies; 2 dairy; 2-3 fruits (1/4-1/2 cup each). The only unlimited food group is veggies- the rest are very strict.
I have lost 27 pounds doing this- it is balanced and makes sense.
NO lifestyle change is easy, though. I worked my butt off (literally) to accomplish this. Diet and exercise contributed to the weight loss (took about 2 months).
I am eating more "cheat" foods now, but I cheated only about three times during the time I was loosing weight. When I stopped being so strict with myself, I still lost 5 more pounds.
I would like to get down to 125- 3 pounds away. But I am not working very hard! I need to take my own advice.
Hope this helps.

I have been on Atkins for a good while now (6 weeks or so) and have basically stayed in induction the entire time. I am losing some weight, feel great, but I have been using the ketostix and NEVER measure more than "moderate" and usually just "small" on the ketosis scale. Can any of y'all think of a possible reason?

I bought the book "Protein Power" and tried their low-carb diet for several weeks and lost 5 lbs and that was it. Others, the weight just falls off. I believe I am one of those people that it doesn't work for. I am a coffee drinker (cream, nutrasweet) but Atkins claimed caffeine and nutrasweet both tend to raise the insulin level, so they are not good on this diet. It's all about the insulin level. I figured if just drinking coffee and a diet pop every once in a while was going to keep me from losing weight, this diet was not for me.

It just seems odd to me that years ago when I tried the Protein Power diet, I enjoyed it so much that I shared it with people at work, and they all called me the "carb queen". I stuck to it for months, but couldn't get past the 5lb loss, while others around me were dropping the weight while drinking and partying on the weekends, drinking coffee, pop and whatever. I guess everybody's different!
Hey, Southern Diva, there's alot to be said about being a "Southern Belle"! Besides, Cincinnati's not going anywhere. It'll be here waiting for you if you ever decide to visit!! I wish you all the luck in the world in all ways (including the dreaded dieting roller coaster-I can totally relate!)

Thanks susiejb! I am giving up on the protein thing. I only have less than 10 to lose and I saw a dr. last week and he said with my small amount it was not for me! I will be in Cincinnati next week to bring my son home with me to Ga. I miss it so much! Good luck to you on this diet roller-coaster!

Same to you, Southern Diva! Hey, before we drop this site, I'll tell you what might help. Get yourself a walking partner or buy a little cheap FM radio and headphones and walk by yourself. It's a great way to make new friends and to gain your own peace of mind, not to mention a to lose a few pounds. Find a favorite park, preferably with a steep hill or two. Then get yourself a set of 5 lb. weights and work your muscles because building muscle raises your metabolism, which burns the fat like crazy. I don't even bother to diet anymore because the combination of walking and weight training allows me to pretty much eat what I want and not gain. If you know you'll be eating an extra large dinner one night, work out with the weights beforehand. This will begin a fat-burning process that will last for hours.
It sounds like we're alot alike-about 10 lbs is all I need to lose also, but I'm 44 now and have resorted to the fact that it probably ain't gonna happen! I'm trying to be happy with myself the way I am. You know how we women are-we're never happy with our bodies!! Oh, and I have a son also (he's 14 and driving me crazy). Hope your son likes his new home. Don't worry, I can tell that you're a nice person and will make friends fast! You'll be okay in GA!

susiejb! Thanks for all the nice things you said. I wish we could have met before I moved here! I lived in the Finneytown area And worked in Kenwood. We could have been walking buddies! Like yourself, I am in my early 40's http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif and it is getting way to hard to lose that "last 10"!!! take care

Maybe we can talk again on the boards. I tend to hover around the diet and fitness section! By the way, I live in Loveland and work in Mason. You take care, too. Remember -change can be good (I could use one sometimes myself!)
