HI SOME OF YOU MAY THINK IM MAD!

I have a rock solid family two children a daug 8 and a son 6 with moderate autism who is a very loving child and attends mainstream sch with full support. I live in a lovely area and only work 8 hrs a weekk, I would dearly love to adopt a girl so that my daughter has a sister as i have always felt a great loss of something since my son was diagnosed. Yet intial information i have been told we wouldnt be cosisdered for adoption because of Alex and we have to have a child who would be 2 yrs younger than him anyway. this has devastated me and would love to hear any views or experience you can give me.  abbylou xxx

Hi,

I was curious where you got the information you did regarding adoption? I am not aware of age stipulations for adoptions. I would also be rather surprised if you were DQ based on your son's diagnosis. I think that it is likely that you would be asked questions about it and the agency would want to ensure the safety and security of the child, but I never heard of that bing a reason to exclude a family from the adoption process. I also think that your ability to adopt a child will depend on which type of adoption you are pursuing. International adoptions often move much more quickly that domestic adoptions. You could also adopt an older child from state agencies. These children typically have had their parental rights terminated due to abuse or neglect. Often there are also children that have special needs that are awaiting adoption. Best wishes....

ttHANKS FOR YOUR REPLY CONNERS MON.

I forgot to mention im from the uk where the rules are differnt but since yesterday i have spoken to an independant agency who has confirmed we would need to speak intailly to a socail worker about situation and it is now legislation here that you can only adopt a child two years or more younger than your youngest even in my situation it wouldnt be the best idea, red tape eh
she also confirmed that Alexs condition wouldntbe a issue to begin with it all depends on lots of things.
