Hi everyone,
Here's my story. I've had hbp for 20 years, developed during a pregnacy and never came down. For the last 15, I was on lisinopril, which gave me really good control. Over that time I was developing angio-edemas and no dr. ever told me they were from lisinopril. Got a new doc last year and at a visit about 6 mos ago, I had one on my neck. He immediately stopped the lisinopril and was surprised no one ever told me about this side effect. So I was suffering all these years without need. He put me on toprol xl 50. No good results, added hctz 25, still no good results. Increased me to toprol xl 100. Bp is still running high. Sent me for a kidney ultrasound and doppler. I find out there's issues and need to see a kidney dr. I go to see him and he adds procardia xl 30. He told me I was lucky to be taken off the lisinopril because it kept my bp down, so no one suspected a kidney problem. All my kidney bloodwork is within normal ranges, but I have a stenosis and my left kidney is shrinking.
So now I'm on all these meds and feeling horrible.......so tired its hard to function and my bp is still 150/98. I have to go for an mra next week. Has anyone had this problem????? Any ideas how I can get this bp under control.......... So is this considered secondary hypertension? All these years they have told me its heriditary..........
thanks

patti,
You MAY have the wrong concept of angioedema. Are you talking about HIVES? (urticaria)
They are related and can both be caused by lisinopril, and both are good reasons to stop the drug class, but the angioedema is an episode of sensitivity so bad that your lips, and tongue swell and you can even suffocate with an extreme case because your throat closed.
Yep,
Blood pressure caused by damage to the kidney is called "secondary hypertension." It is often curable if the root cause can be cured.
