My mom (72) is tiny - 4'7" and usually weighs 90 pounds - in the last month she's gained 15 pounds in fluid - her legs are twice the normal size - her BP is 200/100. The docs can't seem to get her on the right meds. She's on Clonidine HCL , Lisinopril, Furosemide, Atenolol, Potassium CL - that's a lot of meds not working - they want her to wait - isn't the diastolic of 100 very dangerous?

I would get her to another doctor for a 2nd opinion immediately. Her current med regime is obviously not working properly. I'm assuming she's been on her meds for at least month, since you stated she's put 15 lbs in fluid.

The blood pressure is high, other avenues such as congestive heart failure, etc. need to checked out by a cardiologist, skip the GP' s. Something is going on to cause the edema, and sustained high blood pressure.

Yep, sounds like something major going on here. The problem here isn't so much the BP. It's the fluid retention. 15 lbs in one month is a lot. This much fluid sounds like kidney failure.

My God,
Furosemide (Lasix) is a potent diuretic and usually very good at draining edema.
Something very serious is going on here. Has there been a cancer diagnosis, is her belly swollen?
Often endstage cancer, kidney or even heart failure can cause this runaway "dropsy."
She needs an expert differential diagnosis. It sounds like her problem goes far deeper than primary hypertension.
I think she needs to be in a hospital so that at the very least, potent diuretics can be administered intravenously to abate that edema, while MRI's and some elaborate tests are used to pinpoint the source of the problem.
It is the edema that is causing the high diastolic...there's just too much water both inside and outside her vascular system.

thanks to all that replied... I kidnapped my mom and took her to ER - she was 225/113. As I said, she is only 4'8" and 75 lbs... anyway, they admitted her and her primary doc saw her in the Er and asked that she be admitted to the hospital. They are running tests and giving her tons of lasix....

Janrich,
I agree with the others who posted here. Furosemide is Lasix and is a very powerful
diurectic and she should not be gaining weight. Also when you have an uncontrolled
BP it is a sign of kidney problems. Her renal arteries could be blocked which results in hypertension. She needs a triple renal scan and if they are blocked they will put in a stent. Did this hypertension come on all of a sudden? Given her weight and size her BP
is way too high...it is high for anyone but especially someone so small. Has the doctor ruled out any possibilities that could be elevating her BP, ie, Congestive heart failure,
which if that is the cause who present as weight gain, fatigue, shortness of breath,
rales in the chest when checked with a stethoscope it sounds like a crackle sound.
She might also have a low grade fever...Please do not wait as many things could be
going on and to wait and see approach is not going in the end to be good for your mother. Kidney damage caused from hypertension or any other cause is not repairable so you need to go to a cardiologist and if that is not working to a nephrologist who specializes in kidney disease. I lost my mother to kidney failure so please get another opinion. God bless you in your efforts to help your mother. Also have her stop using
salt and any other foods that can cause high blood pressure.
