Hello.. I just wanted to share my lil moment of happiness.. hope nobody minds :) So my grandmother is in a nursing home.. 2 years with Alzheimers. she's been doing really bad for a while now. About 3 weeks ago, she was at death's door.. didn't wanna eat, just totally gave up. They were talking to us about putting her in hospice. Well, about a week later I mentioned putting her on Namenda.. just grasping at straws. They did it. They also switched her antidepressants. Now she makes funny faces, talks to us, tries to get out of her chair. She was like that for a couple of weeks. Today, my mother came home from seeing her & jumped in the door. She was so excited, my grandmother called her by name, asked her what she was having for supper, and offered to come home and help her! She also had her teeth in, which she hasn't for weeks now. Now I know she's gonna be up and down, and I shouldn't get my hopes up, but it just has made me so happy to see her like this :) The lady was at death's door.. now she's sooooo much better.. she even eats almost all her supper..'

Hi Erika 2610,

Well - that is good news! It does make you feel so good, when something for the good happens, doesnt it?! Had your grandmother never been on any kind of alzheimers type medicine before?!

As long as you know this is not a permanent fix, enjoy your grandmothers new found life! Take care of you so that you can watch over your grandma.

I know it's not a permanent fix at all.. I'm just so happy at the moment that god's given me some more time to be with my grandma :) And early on, she was on Exelon, but as far as I know, they took her off of it. The funny thing is, my uncle.. her POA, didn't even wanna try it. But we convinced him to. I just couldn't get over that she called my mom by her name, and asked if she needed help making supper. Now just pray that when I go see her tommorrow, she's like this again :) My mother believes that god's giving her more time to be with her mommy. Because when she was in her real bad stages, my mom got so frustrated, and it was so hard to the point where she was ready to cut down her visits with her. God works in mysterious ways I guess :)

Hi Erika!

Just goes to show that miracles never cease! This time with your grandmother being herself again is so precious. As has been said, enjoy her, say all you've wished she understood in the last 2 years, hug her and let her feel how much she is loved. What a gift for all of you! If/when it doesn't last, you'll know you made the best of the time she was back. We'll hope this alertness lasts a long time.

Thanks for sharing your happy news!

Cheers! Barbara :)

Thank you so much :) I'm so glad for our 'second chance'.. I went tonight and had to do a double take.. she was feeding herself! I told her she looks like my old Memere again :) It's great. And as I said, to think my uncle poopooed me when I told him about this medication.. now I go see her, and I wanna stay the night..

I'm so happy for you. My dad was never on that particular drug. I doubt it was available then. Cherish every moment. I love the "funny faces".

I get such a kick out of em :) And they just come from nowhere.. me & my mom will be sitting there talking to her, watching TV or somethin, and all the sudden she'll just like cross her eyes or somethin funny like that.. it's so cute :)
