Has anyone experience fatigued/achey legs while on Lipitor? I have stopped taking my Lipitor since Saturday on the advice of my doctor and also had my blood taken to have my liver enzymes checked (still waiting on results). They are not for sure if this is the cause of it or not. Thanks for your help! :)

That is a very common side affect of statins, even though they say it is "RARE". Glad your dr. had U stop and is running some tests. Maybe the dr. can put U on something else, or if your numbers aren't too bad, U can get them down with diet and exercise.

Good luck, hope the tests are ok....

Hey JJ,

Thanks for your response. My cholesterol is a total of 254. I have been on Pravachol in the past too and had to get off it because of muscle pain. Ugh!! With Pravachol, the pain came right away, but with Lipitor, I was on it for about a month before it came. I will let you know what my results say. Thanks again for responding :D

U sound like me, I can't take statins at all. They tried me on Lipitor and within 3 months my GI track was a mess, took them almost 6 months to get that under control. After they tried me on Baycol, oh boy, that really had me so tired and sore I barely made it to the mailbox and back, and climbing stairs was a nightmare. Both affected me within about 3 months, so I just chucked em and said NO MORE!!

My numbers are about borderline, usually TC runs 235-250, and the LDL runs about 145-160. 3 months ago I started with oatmeal in the a.m., 1/4 tsp. of cinnamon, and I drink ALOT of green tea. Last month my numbers went from:

TC....239 to 198 LDL....161 to 126

I don't know if it was a fluke or what, but at least it will keep my dr. off my back for a little while. I also started eating yogurt for a snack at nite, and eating cottage cheese, low fat instead of my reg. American cheese, as I am a cheese lover. Upped my vitamin C to 1,000 mgs. instead of just 500, and also eat some mixed nuts for the good oils. Like I said, it might have just been a fluke, but had to try something, as I will not go on another statin, my quality of life is more important to me then living longer in pain.

Good luck, and I'm sure others will give U some ideas as to what they do for some natural ways to lower the numbers, as alot of us can't take statins.

Best wishes, keep us posted......

BTW...How high were all your numbers, like LDL, HDL and Trigs.? Sometimes different things affect different numbers.

Hey JJ,

That is awesome about your numbers going down. I would say that the changes you have made in your diet have helped decrease your numbers. Sorry to hear you had to go through all that pain with trying different cholesterol medications

I was wondering if Pravachol and Lipitor were in the the same "family" or not, but I guess they are.

My total cholesterol is 254; my LDL is 165. High cholesterol levels run in my family too and my family is very active and eat healthy. I was hoping that I would have found out my lab test results by this afternoon, but nothing so far. I don't take any vitamins, but have been told to take them. They just upset my stomach too much.

Keep up the good work and I will keep you all posted :)

Yes, hubby and I had both been on statins, he took them for 7 years. During those years he developed alot of problems, some which are permanent now. I only wish I had a computer during that time, as then I would have known 99% of his problems were from statins, but it is too late now. There are folks who take them and seem to have no problems, but the majority of folks seem to have lousy side effects. I know my cholesterol is genetic also, as the dr. knows I eat right etc. etc., but I have to really struggle to keep my numbers within a decent range. Sometimes I do good, other times they jump up, but I refuse to give up everything I like just to have GOOD numbers...

What kind of vitamins do U take that upset your stomach, as usually a good multi, or a B/C complex helps. Vitamin C is very good, but I know it can be a lil tuff on some folks stomachs, but for now, I take a good multi and 500 C in the a.m., after dinner I take a garlic pill, 600 calcium and an extra 500 C. In the morning is when I have oatmeal and take my cinnamon, and as I said, I drink alot of Bigelow green tea with lemon. The cinnamon is very good for keeping your blood sugar levels in tact also. Hubby is diabetic and also seems to have mostly Trig problems, so I started him on cinnamon 3 weeks ago, and also have him take 500 C with his multi after supper. His cholesterol numbers are usually good, but his Trigs run in the 400's most of the time, so I am trying like crazy to help get them down. Luckily his drs. are very good and understand he can't take statins, so they don't bug him, but my dr. is one that goes by the numbers game. I have to have a talk with her next time I go, as I am not going to be playing the numbers game, and if she doesn't like it, oh well, too bad, ya can't say I ain't trying!!

Hopefully U get your results tomorrow and they will be ok. U can also web search for a good cholesterol diet, and read some of the posts here from others who have lowered their numbers with diet and exercise. Folks here are mighty helpful, so just ask questions, someone will be there to try and help.

Best wishes, and enjoy your evening....

Just to let you know that I was on Lipitor for 4 years and during that time I began to have problems with my legs,. I kept c/o problems with my ankles. The pain was so bad I couldnt walk. Then I tore my left knee (Miniscus) had surgery and 2 weeks later tore my rt leg gastroc muscle and since I couldnt walk well I through out my back and ruptured my s1 s2 disc. boy was i in bad shape. I finally said to my pmd could lipitor be causing all this problem. He looked at me and said "yes". Why did it take me to find out the problem. docs dont seem to realize that these chol. meds also do harm. I've tried all the meds with similiar results. I'm lost but I'm not taking the statins anymore Oh yes I've also tried all the over the counter meds too Same reslults

Mine don't get achy or sore, but they do feel very weak. I had no idea it was the lipitor until I was off it for awhile and the weak feeling disappeared. When I had my liver enzymes checked, even though my muscles were weak I tested out fine. Hopefully you will too!

As far as drs. telling U your pains and aches are from statins is almost impossible, I'm surprised your's even said yes. No matter how much I tried to tell my drs. it was the statins they told me ...NO way!! Sorry U had to go thru so much and find out it was caused by your meds.

I don't know exactly how high your numbers are, but U might beable to get them down with diet and exercise. Read some of the posts when U have time, as many folks have done it without meds. It isn't easy and it doesn't always work, but if U can't take the statins, changing your diet and maybe adding some supplements just might help.

Best of luck... :)

Hi Nancy, have U stayed off of them or are U going to just try not taking them for a lil while? With the Lipitor I had mostly GI problems, and after they finally got me pretty much back to normal, shoved me on Baycol. That stuff really made me sore, but like U, also made me extremely weak, so I got totally disgusted and tossed em in the pail. Some folks have no problems with them, then there are those of us who just can't handle them.

Take care, glad your doing better......

Last year I had a very bad experience with 20mg. of Lipitor a day. The doc put me on it because cholesterol was 304, because of having hypothyroidism from an antithyroid drug for Graves disease. I took some radioactive iodine and became very hypo, and pain was starting in my left shoulder. Then, it spread to my right shoulder. I started getting pains in my legs and feet. Woke up one morning and could barely make it downstairs because of so much pain in my legs and feet.

Went to the doctor in tears, yep in tears because I was so hypo and depressed, and so much pain. He told me to stop taking the Lipitor and maybe get back on it in a month. I thought "No Way".

Well, about 3 or 4 days later, started feeling better. The pain was leaving my body, all except for my left shoulder. I complained about it to the doc and insisted on an Xray. They said it was Arthritis in my shoulder.

I still have the Arthritis in my shoulder, and sometimes swells up and hurts like the dickens.

Then, as I did some reading about Lipitor, it said that patients with hypothyroidism must be monitored closely while on this drug. Ahhh!! I should have researched this a long time ago.

It hurts on the top of my shoulder blade. I am going to see if the doc will give me a cortisone shot, so I won't have to take ibuprofen or other medications.

Hankypank,

The CoQ10 will not help your cholesterol levels - but it may help prevent muscle pain from statins...

I would suggest you cut way back on processed carbohydrates - which is virtually anything you can eat out of a box... Substitute complex carbs - lots of fresh veggies, some fresh fruit. Avoid sugar or any 'white' carbs (white bread, potatoes, rice)... This will help reduce your triglyceride levels. Try to eat foods that have a low glycemic index...

As far as cholesterol levels go - the problem is largely genetic. If you have a genetic disposition to high ldl, low hdl - then diet doesn't ususally help a whole lot, nor does exercise. I would still try, however, to cut back on saturated fat, and eliminate trans-fats - read the ingredients - if it says 'hydrogenated' anywhere, put it back on the shelf, even if the labels says '0 Trans Fat'.

You shouldn't elminate fats - fats are good for you if you take in the right kinds and limit their intake - monosaturated are very good (like Olive Oil)...

If you do have high cholesterol, then naturally you want to limit dietary cholesterol intake (eggs, cheese, dairy).

I've been having good luck with a product called Policosanol - I take 20mg/day and it has lowered my cholesterol about 15% in the first 6 weeks of use. I have another blood test in a another week - and will post my results... If you do take Policosanol, make sure it is made from Sugar Cane, not rice...

I don't accept the theory that high cholesterol is a major factor in heart disease. Over 40% of heart attacks happen in those with low to normal cholesterol levels. I think that chronic low-level inflammation and the resulting response by the body is what causes plaques to develope.

I take Folic Acid (800mcg/day) and 81grams of aspirin per day to reduce inflammation and reduce homocystein levels.

I take 3-4 grams Vitamin-C, 400iu Ester-E daily to help prevent LDL from becoming oxidized, since it is oxidized LDL that is most likely to be drawn into arterial plaques...

And DO EXERCISE... Even though it may not directly reduce your LDL numbers, it helps maintain proper weight, reduces stress, and has an overall benefit to your general health...
