Hello again all. I just went back for my follow up to retest my lipid profile. I have onlt been dieting and exercising for 5-6 wks but have made big inprovements in my numbers. Check it out
Last Month This month
Total 238 Total 172
Trig 315 Trig 203
HDL 29 HDL 29
LDL 146 LDL 102
I am still having a little bit of trouble with my blood sugar being high, but I plan to lose some more weight and she said that hopefully if I can get down to around 135 my blood sugar would return to normal. I started out at 158 and I am now 147 and I am 5'5 with small bone structure. I am only 28 and am trying everything I can to prevent going on meds for HC and Blood sugar. I also as I talked about in my precious posts, had her take me off Zoloft for anxiety and had her give me Wellbutren so I can try to stop smoking. I hope all this works or I am going to lose it.....lol. I am a bit more inspired not that I seen improvement. Oh yeah I also got copies of my labs and the did test my creatine last time it was .7 is that ok?
Thanks all!
Emily :)

Hi Emily,
In females, total CK should be 10-79 units per liter (U/L), so if yours is only
.7, I'd say that is excellent. Your copy of tests results should have the "range"
on the same line across from your numbers.
Cinnamon can help lower both your triglycerides and blood sugar......
Win Win situation. Take two 500mg capsules or 1/2 teaspoon daily.
Keep up the great work. ;)

Thanks everyone...apparently diet and exercise can help...lol.
Frankie,
I am having trouble find cinnamon. Where do you get it? I seen someone post something about just taking regular cinnamon, but I would rather take the pill form if I can find it.
Thanks again!

Frankie, I am having trouble find cinnamon.
Where do you get it?
Hi Emily,
I'm in the USA and find it at Walmart. Also in health food stores.
Most of the online nutritional supplement places have it too.
Or in your grocery store, just buy the cinnamon in the spice
section. 1/4th to 1/2 teaspoon daily.

That is GREAT progress, Emily.
Unfortunately your miserable HDL hasn't budged and is still giving you a TC/HDL ratio near 6. The low HDL is a serious risk factor all on it's own.
If you are not already doing it, I STRONGLY recommend two drinks every night...make them unsugared. Dry red wine is a good choice, but a martini will do the trick.

Correct me if I am wrong but with Emily having an elevated blood sugar issue I'd think those drinks would not be a good idea correct?

I think 2 drinks will do far more good than harm.
Even for full blown insulin dependent diabetics, the wine can be factored in as part of the "carbohydrate quota" even though alcohol is not really a carbohydrate.
An HDL of 29 requires some drastic intervention and alcohol is the one that I;ve found works most dependably.
THe effect of two glasses of wine on somebody's fasting glucose the next day is probably quite miniscule.

I am not much of a drinker, but I recently am trying to like wine...lol. I generally do not like the taste of alcohol, but am willing to try. Is there any dry red wine that tastes decent? So far the only red wine that I have drank is soft red and soft rose. I am worried about my BS and the wine also but I would really like to get my hdl in a better range. I am getting ready to start wellbutren to help to stop smoking. I have heard that that can have a big impact on your hdl and trygs. The only reason I have started it yet is because I am always nervous about taking a new med. Has anyone here taken it before? I would prefer to not have a seizure...lol, so I am really nervous. I have been weaning myself off Zoloft (for anxiety) this week so hopefully the weight will come off more easily. Any time I have came off it in the past I have dropped off 10 or more pounds in no time. The DR didn't seem to be too concerned about my hdl since I had dropped my other numbers. I mean she wasn't happy about it but seemed to be more ok with it since my LDl went down along with my Total and Trygs. She said that at least it didn't go down with the rest, which I guess can occur. I guess all my oatmeal, veggies and olive oil are helping out like I had hoped.
Thanks again all! You guys are a great help, I am so glad I found this board.

Emily, many congrats to you. I, too, am trying to get my numbers in check with diet and exercise alone. After reading your post, I'm really excited about my next check!
Your question about red wine, I'm a new red wine person, too. I could handle the roses and the sweeter German whites, but red was a bit scary for me. The pinot noirs which stress fruit on the backs of the bottles are very tasty, but not overly sweet. There are some merlots you can apply the same rule to, as well. If the backs stress oak, oak, oak on the back, they will usually be very dry and hard to get down without a big juicy steak to go with it...at least for us new red wine drinkers. I think it just takes time to graduate to the drier wines, at least to be able to enjoy them by themselves.
I found a cool wine store in my area, and the folks there have been extremely helpful in selecting wines for newbies. I was able to find them in my phone book under liquor stores. I'm so glad I did! Maybe there's a place similar in your neck of the woods.
For smoking, I'm a 20-year smoker who's trying to quit. I had a bad experience with Wellbutrin, but I know lots of people who love it. If your doc thinks you'd be okay with it, just try it. If it doesn't agree with you, then you'll know.
I'm using a behavorial program to stop smoking. It's pretty easy, takes a couple weeks, is free and seems to be working so far. I started it last Monday, smoking 38 cigarettes that day. Yesterday I smoked 12. I end it with the patch, the medium one to start, then the lowest milligram patch. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll be happy to share it.

Another nice red wine is cabernet savignon; usually very smoothe on the palate.

I am diabetic and have started drinking a glass of red wine each day. I tried several and finally settled on Carlo Rossi Paisano, a soft Italian type red wine. It 's pretty economical too--the last gallon jugs I bought were only $5.99. It doesn't affect my blood sugar.
You might try chianti and zinfandel too.

My God, Jacqueline,
I thought my price for PAISANO was the best price on the planet ($8.99 on sale, $9.99 otherwise.) WHere did ypu ever find it for $5.99 or are you a personal friend of CARLO??:D:D:D

Lenin, check out your warehouse type food stores. I got mine from the Foods Co. Their usual price is $7.99--same price at Longs Drugs. It goes on sale every few weeks, and I stock up.

That is what my husband buys every so often. Neither of us are drinkers, but he does enjoy a good glass of wine every so often. I tried it a couple of times, not bad, but I can only drink a very small glass, as my tolerance to wine or any kind of booze, is almost zero %. Hubby calls me a "cheap" drunk, as one glass and I am looped..... :D
Enjoy your evening and weekend.....

Hi JJ:
Yes, this is a great wine, and it's quite popular in our house. My wine glass holds about 10 ounces! I'll drink it maybe 2 or 3 times a week before I eat dinner. Actually, I'm much more of a beer drinker, though.
Anyway, we finally got a little rain tonight, which is a welcome relief. I don't know about you, but in my neck of the woods we haven't had any significant rainfall in over a month, and the ground is dry as a bone. Heck, I haven't even run the lawnmower in over a month. That's how bad its been. I don't ever remember a summer as miserable as this one. It's been so darn hot and dry all summer.

Usually hubby has some about 9 at night, as he has to take his nightly pills about 11 and doesn't want to mix wine and the pills. I'm lucky if I have a small glass twice a month, and if I do, I make sure I am ready to take a nap if need be..... :D I'm very petite, so I guess it hits me alot harder then other folks. Oh well, whatcha going to do?
We had a major T-storm thing going on monday and man, it POURED buckets for 2 hrs. Like U, this was the first time we did our lawn in 4 weeks, now that is extremely unusual. Our trees are already dropping leaves, alot have changed colors, I'm hoping to have a pretty fall, but too many leaves are already dead!... I like to take pix of the fall foliage, so maybe we will get lucky and get some pretty colors, but don't think it will be as nice as other years. It was warm today, but it sure has gotten mighty cool tonight and next week is suppose to be only in the 70's.....
To me it has been a very strange summer, way too hot and dry, and all these nasty hurricanes, boy mom nature must really be mad at us for something. I really feel for the folks in the way of these hurricanes, they have been thru heck and back to say the least. Hope it all comes to an end soon and everyone can get their lives back to some kind of order.
Enjoy your wine, or beer, and have a great weekend. Have a drink for me too, just don't get woozy like me.... :D TTYS.....

JJ,
Well, I think you probably got more rain than we did. For us, it didn't last very long. Oh yeah, the leaves are drying up and falling off the trees here too. I believe you said you live in Connecticut. That's a nice state. I've passed through there several times on my way up to Rockport, Massachusetts, where I sometimes vacation. I particularly enjoy the drive along the Merritt Parkway. It's very scenic.

I think we did also, as we talk with some friends at nite from Jersey on the radio, and they didn't get the rain we did. Yup, the Merritt is a very pretty ride in the fall, I used to drive it each day on my way to work. Rockport is pretty and a nice place to vacation, as I am originally from Lowell Mass., but haven't been back home in years.
Very chilly here today and going to be a chilly week. High in the 70's during the day, and low 50's to uper 40's at nite, what a change huh?
Have a good one, and TTYL....

Yes, October is the best time to go up there. One thing I noticed about the houses in Rockport is that none of them has aluminum siding. They all have wood siding, and people paint their houses. And the lobster? Wow, you couldn't get better lobster anywhere!
Well, take care and have a nice day.

I think Rockport likes that old fashion look. I know we have some historic houses around here and they are kept as much near original as possible, so NO aluminum siding here either. Like I said, I haven't been up that way in years, but would like to take a nice long ride one of these days just to see some of the scenery. Each fall I swear I am going to take some rides to see the foliage, but manage to get too busy and miss it. VT. is another nice ride, and they have some real old houses up there, most have aluminum roofs so the snow will slide off. First time I went there I found it strange until I asked why the aluminum roofs, plus they are pitched high.
Bet the lobster is great, not many places lately where U get really tasty lobster. Friend of our's did lobster catching for years, and would bring some over by boat from L.I. when he visited, wow it was good. Ok, now I'm getting hungry, so off I go before I start drooling....

JJ,
In Rockport, there is a little lobster shanty down by the water, in an area known as Bearskin Neck. The lobsters are all live, and they will cook them for you. They have some tables outside, in the back of the shanty where you can eat them. I usually just bring them back to my room and eat it there. They'll even give you the melted butter.
Aside from being a very relaxing place, the motel where I stay is well within walking distance of the train station. It's very convenient to hop on the train and take a ride into Boston to spend the day sightseeing. Rockport is a dry town, but that's no problem. Cape Ann is just a short drive down the road, where you can get all the beer or wine you want. :)

We use to have a lil place like that here called Stowes, and although it wasn't a big fancy place, the food was excellent, especially the lobster. Have NO idea where it moved to, or if it went out of business, but it has been gone for years. Lately all ya see around here is fast fod joints, who needs it!!
Sounds like a real great place to go, like U said, your in train distance to alot and driving distance. As a kid, I use to love to go to the Boston Common, they always had something going on there, especially around the 4th. It was also just a great place for kids and adults to go just to picnic. Glad U have Cape Ann, always nice to sit back, put your feet up with a cold one and be good to yourself.....
Hubby is going down to the big car show in Hershey this year. He has always wanted to go, being an antique car buff, so FINALLY he is going. I decided to stay put here, as much as I like looking at the old cars, 3 days of it would make me crazy, plus going with 4 guys would also make me just a tad nuts.. :D
Oh well, it is a gorgeous day, so best get some yard work finished, and then I am done with fall cleaning and yard work.THANK GOD!!..
