View Full Version : Asthma getting worse?

Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone can help me out this. My boyfriend has had exercise-induced asthma for many years. He really only needs his inhaler if he's been heavily working out, and he doesn't get random attacks. He had bronchitis a few months ago and took an antibiotic to clear it up. When he had the bronchitis, it would sometimes be so bad that he couldn't lay down. His chest would be tight and itchy and he had to sit up straight. Since taking the antibiotic, the bronchitis has gone away but every now and then he will still get that tight feeling in his chest. It's when he's laying down relaxing, mainly. I'm starting to think it has something to do with his asthma. When this happened last night, he took a puff of his inhaler and felt a little better. He thinks it's just the lingering effects of the bronchitis (says it sometimes takes months to get over). But I don't know... from the way he looks and acts when this happens, I have a feeling it has to do with his asthma. I'm wondering if it's possible for it to worsen over the years so that anything, not just exercise, can bring on an attack. Or maybe the bronchitis just weakened his lungs and he's more prone to attacks until he's fully healed. I don't know. Can anyone shed some light? I'd appreciate it very much.
Thanks!
Rose

Yes, it probably is his asthma. He should be using his inhaler before any exercise. I jog and I take two puffs of albuterol 15 minutes before I set out. Is he on a steroid inhaler daily? IF not, sounds like he should be - Flovent or at least Singulair. Does he have a pulmonologist for his asthma? I'd see that he went to one and got on a program to keep these episodes from flaring up.
