For the past few months, I have been experiencing difficulty breathing. I can actually pinpoint the place on my throat where it feels like it's closing. It's at the bottom of my neck, right in the middle. I don't have wheezing or coughing ~ I just have this incredibly uncomfortable feeling in my throat like I can't get enough air. The only thing that helps ease this feeling is breathing into a cup of ice. I don't know why, but there's something about breathing in that ice cold air that makes it easier to breathe. If this doesn't sound like asthma, do you know what it may be?
Thanks in advance.

May I ask you a few questions? When do you have the symptom?
In the early morning? When it is cold or humid? In what season it gets worse?
Are you allergic to something?
I think it's too early to determine that you have asthma.
You might have allergic laryngitis or something.
I would see both a laryngologist and an allergist.
Hope this would help.

Thank you for responding.
It is a lot worse at night, like right now. This is a fairly new symptom for me, so I don't know if it will continue when the weather get colder. It has been a very humid summer, but I'm in an air conditioned environment, especially at night, when it is really bad. It just feel like a lump in my throat; it's really odd. If I focus on it, it seems really bad (which I attribute to anxiety), but I don't believe the underlying cause to be anxiety. I was thinking it may be allergies, as well, especially since I have a lot of nasal congestion with this symptom.
Thanks, again!

Your symptom gets worse with nasal congestion...
I think there are two possibilities about this.
One is that you have post nasal dripping which can cause uncomfortable feeling in your throat.
The other is that you have asthma. I also sometimes have a strange feeling in my throat before my asthma exacerbates.
Anyway, I recommend you to see a doctor (an allergist? or a laryngologist?) who do some tests, since I'm not a professional and can't give you any medical advice. Good luck.

I have been dealing with asthma for over 30 plus years and it doesn't sound like asthma to me. When I was reading your post, it sounded like anxiety symptoms. Usually when asthmatics breathe in cold air, it constricts their lungs making it difficult to breathe. Now, you very well may have allergies. The first thing I would do is to go to an allergist and get some tests run. They will also be able to determine whether you have post nasal drip going down your throat. You could also have acid reflux which mimics asthma and can give you a funny feeling in the throat. I would get that checked also. Hope you feel better!!!
