View Full Version : Prednisone effect?

Hello,

Today is my 6th day on the Prednisone. I am really not feeling much better yet. Anyway, dose is 10 mg twice a day. I am feeling really shakey and kind of sick to my stomach.

Does this go away over some time? I already have anxiety and depression and this shakiness is just adding to it.

Only 24 more days to go on this dose until I taper.

Any advice??

debill the first couple days I took prednisone, I did feel a little out of it, but not real shakey just slightly floaty. I know not a good description, but wanted to let you know that you may have a few funny feelings for a couple days. If they continue call the docs office, you shouldn't have to suffer if the meds aren't right.

Thanks Glojer,

My stomache pains have gone away but I am still really shakey. I called the doctors office and he said this is a normal side effect. I guess I will just have to ride it out.

Thanks again, deb

Debill,

I know the ups and downs of taking prednizone. I took it off and on for 2 years with ITP. I was taking a high dose (60mg daily). There was weight gain, trouble sleeping, huge appetite.

Recently I was dx with Lupus and my doc wanted to put me on 20mg of prednizone every other day. I was like you, and didn't want to do it, but my pain was too great. I'm glad I went on the prednizone. My doc has lowered the mg from 20mg every other day, down to 10mg every other day. We were going to go lower, but I had a flare up so he wants to keep watching it. There are side effects with any drugs, but the benefits I've received have been worth taking it. In the beginning I felt light-headed, almost dizzy. My appetite did increase after a couple of weeks. My stomach didn't do well without food. You really need to have a good meal before you take prednizone. I took it after I ate a piece of toast and I felt like I was having heartburn. Now I try to take it after eating toast and an egg, or bacon. I hope this helps you out. Good luck!

Thanks Adecki,

My stomach is feeling somewhat better. I eat half my meal then take it and eat the rest. I still have the shakes really bad though.

Today is somewhere around my 11th day on it and I still don't have relief from my joint pain.

Hopefully it will happen.

Thanks, deb

Hiya deb,

Sorry you are still not feeling the benefits of your steroid treatment. As I hav said before, I have been taking steroids daily for over 30 years. What I do, if I don't actually fancy eating when I take it, is drink a glass of milk to get it down. This was recommended to me many, many moons ago by my lupus doctor. Milk can actually settle your stomach too.

The shakes, as you describe them, are something I have no comment on, other than to say I have never had this happen to me. You must check all of your other drugs, especially the OTC ones to see if this is perhaps a side effeect of one of those. You must always check all of your drug interactions. Even a simple cough lozenge or linctus can cause us lots of problems. Please be very careful.

Take care.

Thankyou Goldenwings,

I checked with my pharmicist and rheumie on the shakiness. I also take something for anxiety/depression. They both assured me it can be a common side effect from the steroids.

I didn't notice an increae in my appetite until yesterday. I think I could have eaten everything in the house. I just went to bed instead. Must be that side effect took a couple of days to kick in.

Thank you for your reply and I hope your doing well. deb
