MY.WEBMD.COM/CONTENT/ARTICLE/94/102702.HTM--- Article on wine and blood pressure. Study done stating that moderate wine consumption may lower a patient's risk of death especially from all causes, which has not improved even with the recent blood pressure lowering drugs. Researchers say wine may be the key ingredient that helps explain why people with high blood pressure are more likely to die from heart disease in the U.S. than those with the same high blood pressure in the Mediterranean. When the nurse asked me if I drank alcohol at my doctor's office I told her I drank no more than two 5 oz glasses a day and she said that wine may lower blood pressure...

They key factor in this article is in moderation and wine in moderation will reduce it. 2 drinks a night is a powerful antioxidant and lowers BP and cholesterol. More than that would raise the BP and other things..Lisa

Then there must be a lot of people in Europe with hypertension especially in France and Italy where they consume alot of Red Wine. What about the French Paradox where they eat alot of high fat foods and smoke but have lower rates of heart disease and they also drink alot of red wine. How do you explain that??

I'm not a doctor so I can't answer your question but I have read that red wine protect the heard and in Italy they say "Drink Red Wine and never go to doctors". Maybe red wine raises blood pressure in people with high blood pressure, I think so because when I was in Germany I found many people drink red wine instead of water :D .

This is what it comes down to in the article:
“The advice to drinking men ‘at risk’ of hypertension and those with hypertension is to drink less than two drinks per day. At that level they will still benefit from the HDL-cholesterol raising effect and anti-coagulant properties of alcohol which are considered to be protective of the heart,” Zilkens said.
Also take note if you don't drink don't start.. Lisa

Yes, I think it is ok to drink wine only in moderation so I guess a couple of glasses of red wine every other day would not be a problem. You are correct in saying that if you don't drink already don't start..
