Hey Everyone.

I just got home from the home from the hospital. I have been there since monday when I had brain surgery to cure my epilepsy. The part of my head that they cut open to do surgery on is still aching like crazy there is also a lot of pill I need to take after the surgery. I feel like my life is starting all over again. I will be here for support of other fellow epileptic people all my life though. As Ihave been going through all the testing and surgery all of you at this sight have been a great support for me.

Thank You Very Much
Ethan

Ethan,
Thanks for the post. I think I am going to go ahead and go with the having the surgery here soon myself. I just have a couple more things to complete before I can schedule a surgery date. Please keep us updated how you are doing! I would love to know!

Congrats Ethan...take it one day at a time and remember what the docs say post surgery...you may have a few seizures the first couple of months, but they don't "count" those, as your brain has been through a lot and the swelling and area that was removed needs to fill in with spinal fluid. So DON'T get discouraged!

Did you see your new MRI? With the area removed? Katie has a "blank" spot on her MRI where the removal was made. Kind of odd looking. The docs will also take your tissue samples and do testing on them. They may have some info for you at one of your post-op appts. down the road.

Are you having any headaches? Sound or light sensitivity? That will go away after a week or so.

Eat well and make sure you drink enough fluids, as your body needs to generate more spinal fluid...I think through bone marrrow??? That part I'm fuzzy on, after a year.

Take care and take it easy for the next week or so...

Im not only having a problem with the fact that the time after the surgery is giving me a headache but it also causes me to have trouble eating. If I eat something light and eat it slowly I have been throwing up later after eating it. Im trying to eat anything but Im having trouble finding something that will not result in me throwing up later. The only thing I have been able to eat is jello in small doses. Right now Im trying having a vanilla shake. If anybody has any ideas of what I can eat without throwing up after it pllease let me know.

Thank You
Ethan

Cool or cold things generally work better than anything warm when vomiting is a problem...just gradually work on getting food in. There are clear liquid supplements at the grocery store that might help get some protein in- not sure if i can say a brand name here about those. Also, small amounts at regular intervals might help- maybe every couple of hours.

Hi Ethan,

Were you still vomitting food before you left the hospital? Katie had to be able to keep 3 meals down and have a BM before she could be released from her LTL. Your stomach being "slow" may still have something to do with the morphine and seditive you had for surgery. Depends on how sensitive your body is.

The docs had her eat: applesauce, jello, juices (apple/prune), oatmeal, toast, crackers (any:saltines, graham), pancakes. Fairly bland foods and higher in fiber.

Don't eat protein if you're vomitting. Protein is too heavy for your stomach to process. ie> peanut butter, butter, meat, milk products, etc.

Eat smaller amounts through out the day. This will pass...any other ???'s, fire away. And make sure to REST< REST< REST!!! Sleep whenever you feel the need.

Ethan,
I've had surgery for an AVM and found that eating salads was one of the better foods. In fact, they tasted terrific to me. Best wishes on your recovery. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate.
