Could someone please tell me if I should wake my husband when he stops breathing? He does this some nights a few times and it is between 10 and 20 seconds by count he stops breathing until he snorts loudly and wakes up. I am not sure what to do whether if I shake him he will die of fright or if I leave him he will die because of no oxygen. It is a dilema and a real worry. We are way out in the sticks so not near a centre and as he has been doing this for years thought it was just him but reading here I see it is a problem.

Either way it won't hurt him, he won't die from lack of oxygen or fright. But, get a referral to a sleep center, the apnea needs treatment. Imagine the relief for the both of you when he can sleep without snoring or lack of breathing.

You need to get him treated! Sleep apnea can potentially be life threatening, and left untreated, can put him at higher risk for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes!
Having said that, you do not need to wake him up. When the oxygen level in his blood gets low enough, he will wake up on his own, then go back to sleep without even realizing it. But imagine how exhausting that is - waking up dozens or even hundreds of times per night.
Like wiredqs said, think how much better both of you will feel once you get this taken care of!
