I don't see much of a difference between these two diets. As far as I'm concerned, the South Beach diet is little more than a copycat diet with a glitzy name attached to it.

I ALMOST AGREE, LIKE SOME OF THE OLD PEOPLE I HAVE TALKED TO SAYS IT ALL: THEY ATE WHAT THEY GREW, ATE WHAT THEY KILLED, COOKED IN LARD, HAD NO PRESERVATIVES OR ADDITIVES, THEN WOKE UP AT DAWN AND WORKED THEIR BUTTS OFF IN THE FIELDS! MAYBE WE SHOULD ALL TRY PICKIN COTTON!(LOL)

Actually, Atkins himself did not invent this diet. In fact, he found it in a medical journal 40 years ago when he himself was overweight and trying to lose weight. To his credit, he has refined the diet, added some valuable supplements to accompany it, and written several books on the subject. I guess you could say that he has reinvented this diet. But, aside from that, all of these other similar diets are merely copycat versions, solely intended to mimic the same diet under the disguise of glitzy names, all for the purpose of capitalizing on the exact same principle.

Pmssucks, I love that name, too funny!!!! I think you've got something...with the pickin' cotton. I've been on Atkin's for 3 months and lovin' it. I lost 25 pounds now and only wanted to lose 15. I've started adding carbs to keep from losing anymore. I've no desire to start eating sugar/bread/flour again and it's not because of the way my clothes fit again or how I look....it's totally how I feel, including my rheumatoid arthritis being in total check now. I wish the good Dr. was still alive so I could e-mail in and thank him personally.
I owe my doing Atkin's to the Low Carb Chefs (George and Rachel Stella) after seeing them on The View. They have a website that's extremely supportive with great recipes, just do a search for their names...great people the Stella's and great people on the message board.

Actually, the South Beach Diet was written by a friend of Dr. Atkins. The author is a cardiologist that was looking for a way for his patients to lose weight in a healthy way and also help their heart disease. The only problem he had with the Atkins diet is that you are allowed a lot of fat in the diet. The South Beach Diet is a very good diet. The South Beach Diet is an excellent diet if you have Diabetes too. Another difference is you don't have to count calories, fat grams, or carbs......very nice. I have seen a lot of good in both diets, and a lot of success. So I guess it would be a flip of the coin.

From what I understand, SBD focuses more on eating the right carbs instead of limiting them as a whole. My girlfriend just bought the book and plans on starting in 2 weeks...wish her luck!
