My mother 73 years old was told today that she has what looks like "Acute Leukemia" but all the test hasn't came back yet. But the doctor is pretty sure she has it. I fell apart then had to go tell my father and my brothers and sister the news. Totally unexected for all of us. We didn't know that the doctor was testing for that. She's in the hospital for Cellulitis and ending up learning she has Leukemia what a surprise!

I was wondering if someone can help me with a few questions? I was wondering what are the treatments for that and how good is the cure is? Thanks for any help you can bring to me and my family

Hi
I can relate to your shock..
My sister in law is 58 and she was told almost 2 years ago that she had Acute leukemia
So right away her doctors who specialize in cancer treatments started her on a regime of chemo. She was in the hospital for a month getting this drug or a collection of drugs..She of course lost her hair and got sick..They warned my brother that they would bring her down to her lowest part meaning her blood levels such as her blood counts then build her back up..She went into remission for almost a year to the day of her diagnosis..Then it returned..The next step they wanted to do was a bone marrow transplant but she has a very rare gene that didnt allow that to happen so the next step is now a stem cell replacement....She has no brothers or sisters so they want to collect her stem cells and harvest them to replace back in her body thats were we stand now...we are waiting for her blood to build its self up so they can collect her stem cells...they have her on chemo to make sure that the cancer is know where to be found in her blood..They told us that a stem cell replacement is a pretty good chance for a cure...If she dosnt go through wuth this then the chancesof leukemia returning is pretty high
Its a waiting game you have to have patience and never ever give up

Many Many people are cured of leukemia

God bless you

Ok hers the up date on my mother. We have talked to the doctor today and he told my father that he didn't think she would make it through the chemo. but he is looking into a new drug that is experimental and not on the market yet and he don't know if my mother would be qualified for the testing. Other then that i don't know if they're is anything else he can do for her.

We have a family meeting with the doctor tomorrow (Thursday Sept 29th) I have so many questions to ask but i know when we get talking all that will go out the window. I guess i need to write them down.

It's is so hard to see my mother is so so much pain. Last night she was hurting so much and then her fever spiked up to 103. Now she's on morphine shots and they don't last for very long.

I'm worried about my dad he's 75 and not in all that good of health either. I have seen him getting more tired in the past year. But he wont go tell his doctor how he feels.

My mother been in poor health for more then 5 years and my dad have been doing everything around the house. I really don't know how much he our i can take. I"m getting so stress out. I wish that this is just a dream and i'll wake up.

Anyway if anyone that has gone through this can maybe tell me what to expect in the next week(s) is she going to have more pain or what? I just need to know more about this Acute Leukemia

Thank you for any infor

More update tonight we had our family meeting with the doctor it was so much to take in i'm not sure what all he said. He did tell us that she has Acute Myeloid Leukemia or (ALS) This my be wrong?
The doctor is looking into a trial drug called Tipifarmib but he isn't sure if my mother would be qualified for that trial we'll know more tomorrow (Thursday Sept 29th)

If that wont work out then i guess it's just keeping her comfortable. Right now she is in so much pain and she did have a high fever but it broke this morning.

I have so many questions to ask the doctor but i don't want to as infont of my father or mother so my plan is to take the doctor off to the side and ask him.

If anyone can tell me what to expect on my mothers condition like the pain or sickness or will she go into acoma? I just like to know what to expect.

Thank you

Ken
