My three month old daughter is having what seem to be really bad gas pains. She's had them since she was born. It always happens an hour or so before she fills her diaper. At first the doctor said she just didn't know how to relax her rear muscles and was trying to hold it in. Now, it doesn't seem that is the case. My baby kicks her legs back and screams and arches her back. We've tried the Mylacon drops and have changed her formula a few times (she's currently on the Nestle Good Start). She is mostly breastfed but is supplemented a couple times a day with formula. It's frustrating because she is obviously in a lot of pain but the doctor doesn't seem concerned. Any suggestions?

Hmm, I was going to recommend gas drops but it seems you've already tried.
Sometimes when my son looks like he is having a bad gas bout, I move his legs like he is riding a bike. It seems to help move things along and he is able to burp.
Good luck,
Jen

You can do a search on this board for "Gripe water". You will find a lot of useful information that way. (I didn't want to keep posting the same thing) Hope this helps

The only thing that will help it is to move it along. I would take their legs and move them like they were riding a bicycle. You have to understand that their bowels do not pulsate like ours so you have to help the baby move their gas. You can move her legs like that and put both knees up to her chest and back down, you can massage her lower abdomin very gently to help move the gas around. She may also be one of those babies that she needs to burp alot and move her legs to get things stirring around. I think I spent most of my time helping her feel comfortable then I ever spent feeding her. Try doing these exercises with her even throughout the day, it may make it easier for her when it's time to do poo. Good luck.

Soulcatcher is right...one trick I learned was to lie the baby on her back on your lap with her feet to your stomach and raised up. Bring your knees down so that the baby's head is lowered.....alternate the baby's legs with the knees tucked as close to the abdomen in a bicycle like motion. Lift the baby directly up to your shoulder and attempt to burp. You should get a response in the form of a great sounding burp!!! :D Keep repeating this and make it fun by counting the exercise out with the baby in a songlike fashion. I found it helped and have passed this on to many new mothers and it did seem to help. Hope it works for you too. ;) ~ Goody

Yep - the same thing worked for my little one - in fact we still do it. She will toot or burp with in minutes after doing that - hey you might even get some spit up with it too. Also - try some prune juice (about a tablespoon) with her bottle when you give her the formula. Formula can be more constipating than breastmilk and might cause some discomfort. I tried the Carnation Good Start and it backed her up big time. Added some prune juice and she's a new baby now.
