View Full Version : stopped taking BP meds, one week later

I stopped taking my Innopran, on Sept 20th. At first I was a little nervous, everyone says how dangerous it is. But I risked it, on the chance I could start to feel better. Anyone on this med, can probably agree. The first few days, my BP wasn't too bad 144/95- 140/90- 144/85. What was really off, was my heart rate, 118- 110- 96. I sarted an easy walking program, made sure I was keeping away from the salt.. expect for a little shaky feeling, now and then, I haven't noticed any thing bad. The best part is, I've lost some weight, actually sleep better at night, and I don't feel like my energy is drained at work. The main reason I was put on the med in the first place, frequent Migranes. My BP wasn't not considered high, but slightly above average. But it was definetly not the solution for me. I'd rather suffer from an occasional Migrane, and believe me, I get em bad, then to go on feeling the way I was on the Innopran. :blob_fire

So True.

Weight loss is SUCH a nice development when we get off these meds. After a month, you'll be surprised how well your body adapts to their absence. I'll bet your heart rate slows down too (but, of course, probably not to the drug induced 50 or 60 BPM's that are common with a couple of these drugs.)

I look forward to a life without them (I stoppeed 9/21 so we can compare notes as we go.) I had a VERY salty day yesterday (Ramen noodles for lunch and THEN a Chinese Restaurant for Dinner( and I gained 3 pounds overnight...I'm afraid to take a BP reading but I'll wait wait til tonight, as I usually do, and DO THE DIRTY DEED:(
My numbers are running much like yours, but my heart rate is still fine (60-75BPM.)

Now if only I can stay away from a 2 week holiday bender anytime soon...that always puts me back on the damn drugs. I haven't had anything to drink for about 6 weeks.

Lenin,
Thanks for replying.. My BP seems to have stablized.. It was 127/83 , but my heart rate was downright scary at 122. Right now I've got a nagging headache. I took something for it. These readings were at lunchtime, and work has been really stressing me out. I also had to run across the street to the local pharm, to take the reading, so hopefully that is why my heart was beating so fast. Tomorrow, I will sit for five min in a chair, before taking it, to see if it makes a difference.

Unfortunately mine are still running at around 140-145/ 89-93 and I had spaghetti sauce for dinner and that is BIG TIME SALT. But my weight is back down to within a pound or two of dry weight so I'm expecting tonight's readings to be better. I'm getting 66 as my average resting heart rate.

I did a 30 minute fast walk yesterday (treadmill at 4.8 - 5.0 mph) and I took my heart rate to 120-125 BPM. I plan on getting that to an hour eventually (If I can schedule it with a good afternoon TV show...otherwise I go NUTS watching the clock!:D)
Maybe some SciFi Channel reruns. THank God every treadmill at my gym has a TV set and cable!

Disappointing results continue. My BP is in the 140's/85-95. I am having a hard time avoiding salt and I'm prissed off at myself but I know I'm only human and since I control and count calories EVERY DAY, controlling salt content seems more than I can bear.

Oh well, I continue to take solace in two facts:
1. the higher BP burns calories
2. the higher BP will help to force collateral circulation around any blockages I may have in my coronary circulation...I may need that for the future! After all it's all that kept me alive for 10 years with a completely blocked RCA.

I'll give it at least 2 more weeeks to drop below 140 and then I may have to revisit the MEDS question...an appalling thought because I really hate these pills and their effect on my libido. Maybe then I'll try just the Cozaar AGAIN and hope for a 5 point drop in systolic, sheesh Ralphie boy!

Or dear God, think the unthinkable: Cutting my coffee to 28 ounces a day...Please NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Last time I did this, I had no trouble getting decent numbers. Now, after almost two weeks, I STILL can't get an average under 140/90. Damn, this is disheartening because I FEEL so much better without the meds.

My weight is good, I'm off the booze, my salt intake isn't extreme. I SOOO don't want to start any of these drugs up again.:(
