View Full Version : 3" High Heels

In one months time, I am scheduled to undergo a Bunionectomy on my right foot. I have no pain at present in the joint but experience soreness after wearing 3" heels all evening. My only real reason for this surgery is to be able to continue to wear high heels without the unsightly large joint-viz. with a straightened right big toe. Does anyone else wear 3" heels post op and how soon afterwards? Is the vanity worth the pain, or should I just have wider toed shoes made for me? My surgeon has implied that wearing high heels would be 'a bonus'. I've been told he will use a small metal plate and 2 screws. Can anyone please give me some very urgent advice?

My sympathies and good wishes to you all on the road to recovery...

I think I'd ditch the 3" heels in favor of 2" ones...I had a cheilectomy (no bone straightening needed) and the best I can do is the 2" ones...and that's taking Mobic every day. If you're just experiencing soreness as you described, I'd take an anti-inflammatory(Advil, Aleve, whatever) and see if that takes care of it. If so, forget the surgery. Just my 2 cents....

I don't have bunion experience, but I had ankle surgery. It is one experience that I would never volunteer for! The pain, the crutches, the physical therapy, the pain... I'm not saying whether or not you should do it, but be sure to weigh the risks of surgery and recovery, as well as the possibility of a poor outcome (like more pain afterward than you have now, because it sounds like your pain is minimal now) before opting for elective surgery. Of course, if the pain is very bad and interferes with daily activities, then the pain and risk of surgery is worth it. So it's all about looking at where you are now, where you want to be, and if surgery will realistically (and with acceptable risk) get you there.

1. How large is the bunion?

2. Do you have calluses or anything on it?

3. If it's not painful, I would reccomend you not have surgery. It's very painful and takes a while to heal. A lot of people are not happy with the results of the surgery and it's always a last resort. Go ahead and keep wearing the heels and don't have surgery. When the bunion gets sore, just elevate it, ice it, and/or take an aspirin. You also might consider wearing bunion pads when wearing the high heels. Like I said though, surgery is always a last resort and it will leave you worse off than you are at this point if the bunion doesn't cause pain.

Don't have surgery for vanity reasons. Not worth it. I've had foot problems all my life, and high heels were only for very special occasions. I had surgery and I have trouble getting any shoe to fit at all. Not to mention the ongoing pain. My surgery was successful in terms of "no bunion" but the pain in the ball of my foot makes everything painful.

i am 8 weeks post op reconstructive surgery on all 10 toes. i have 8 permanent screws and am doing great. i wore high heels all the time and intend to continue to do so along with other foot options. my surgery was medically needed, but also cosmetic. it is alot of work, but doable. i have no shoe restrictions now but my toes are still swollen which is normal at this point. my pod told me my feet are still changing so not to buy shoes yet. i would not want to give up 3inch shoes forever if i had the option. prepare for surgery and you will be fine with right attitude.

My doctor won't let me wear a heel higher than 2". Based on what I've gone through w/bunion surgery, I'd say it's absolutely nuts to go through this process for vanity reasons. I'm surprised your doctor is letting you do it.

I don't post very often but felt compelled. Of course you will end up doing what you and your doctor feel is best and I'm only one case, BUT, my bunion surgery left me with a still painful (even worse than before) big toe joint. 8 months later I got an implant to help and it didn't "seat properly". Now I am 10 weeks post op on a bone graft from my hip and a big toe fusion so I will not only never wear anything higher than 1" but can not hike or mountain bike or do marathons or.....to the extent I used to. I received the standard disclaimer papers that said the usual things about "it may not work", "it may be worse" but I thought those must certainly be the exception. From what I've been reading here these past months, I was not so unique. I hope things work out better for you, whatever you decide.

Just my opinion, but if your dr said high heels would be a bonus I think he's just trying to get your business. My surgeon told me high heels will screw up your feet over time. Like Sharon said, you sign the papers agreeing that the surgery might not turn out like you want it too and in your case, when you find that high heels don't turn out to be "a bonus" the dr can say well all cases are different.

I think any foot doctor worth his salt is going to tell you that heels are bad fory our feet. Now whether or not you can comfortably wear a 1, 2 or 3" heel is another topic altogether. As for heel height, kitten heels are very in this year!
