went to the doctor over a month ago with a uti (frequency, when i urinated there was pressure near the end, blood and pus in urine, and vaginal discomfort) the doctor took a urine sample and clarified thats what i had, so he treated the infection with 3 doses of Cipro. I took the doses and still had the infection, so I called up the doc and he prescribed 7 days 14 doses of Septra. with one day of the septra left I started my period, so i couldnt tell if the infection was gone or not. After my period ended I didnt have the pressure when I urinated or the blood or pus in my urine... however I still have vaginal discomfort (not sure where its coming from) and after I urinate a couple of drops of cloudy, milky liquid come out. Im not sure if I still have the uti or its a yeast infection from the antibiotics, or something entirely different... im frustrated, and really dont want to go back to my incompetent doctor, or take any more antibiotics if i dont have to.. please help any advice would be greatly appreiciated

is it itchy discomfort? If so I think you just probably have a Yeast Infection from the antibiotics

Kristin:
I agree you probably have yeast from the antibiotics...Cipro and Septra are strong and you were on them for awhile. You don't have to go to your doctor to get treatment for this...you can buy meds at the drugstore like Monistat. In the same section of the drugstore you can also buy test strips to check if you still have a UTI....but with all the meds, I'm sure your urine is clear of bacteria.

thank you for your advice... its not an itchy feeling though, its more like burning, or stinging... and I have noticed in my urine little white specs of something... if it is a yeast infection can it go away on its own??

If it's a yeast infection, it might go away on it's own if you can eat a lot of yogurt or use a vinegar douche or some other home remedy. If I were in the pain you describe, I'd head to the drug store for the anti-yeast medicine. Those white specs would probably be painful if they were coming from your bladder...do you think they could be vaginal discharge mixed with your urine?

Its been a couple of days, still have the same syptoms (light vaginal discomfort/burning and tightness feeling, and after i urinate a few drops of cloudy milky liquid comes out sometimes with very little white tissue looking pieces of something) Ive also noticed when I urinate not all of it comes out and I feel like I have to go to the bathroom right after Ive already went. So Im pretty sure I have a uti.. but what i dont know is... is it the same one I had to begin with? or another one? I think its the same one I had over a month ago, but if it is the same one why wouldnt the antibiotics I took get rid of it? could it be a different bacteria other than E. Coli? or could the infection be worse then the doctor thought and the antibiotics I took werent strong enough to get rid of it? please help I dont know what should be done about this and if i have to go back to my doctor I want to be able to suggest some stuff to him cause obviously he doesnt have a clue.

I'd suggest going back to your doctor. These sound like classic symptoms of a UTI as you already stated. It may not eb so much that your doctor "has no clue" but that your body may be resitant the antibotic. It may be that he should prescribe a different one for you to help resolve the issue. Different people react differently to antibotics. And unfortunately more and more infections are becoming resistant to them, so more and more antibotics are less effective.
In addition, you should be drinking a lot of water, this will help flush the infection from your system. And aid in assisting with the antibotics. I know this isn't fun esp. when you already have an urgency to go frequently. Best of luck!

thanks for your advice... my mom had a refill for clindamycin she wasnt using so im going to take that and see what happens. Its not meant for UTIs but it is for bacterial infections so i thought its worth a try. Do you know anything about this medication? If you know its definately not going to help please let me know. I dont want to be putting antibiotics into my system if there not going to help at all.

ok ive been taking clindamycin for four days now with no results.. so i have decided to stop.. but confused as to why the antibiotics i have taken havent gotten rid of the infection I got an at home uti test kit, and it came back negative. So now im even more confused. Do I have a uti and the test was wrong? and if I dont have a uti what do I have?? I really dont want to go back to the doctor. my dad has a prescription of cephalexin he isnt using, and im contemplating taking that. and if that doesnt work I might try D-Mannose. But if I dont have a uti then taking those things wont help anyway!? so please any advice would help out a lot.

I know all of you are thinking if I have so many problems.. why dont I just go to the doctor, but I think it is beyond going to a normal doctor now and i might need to go to a gyno, or urologist. However I have never been to either, and I definately want to go to a woman, and I think there are only a few where I live so I probably wont be able to get an appt anytime soon...but I am going to... promise.. but in the meantime my vagina has become very sore, and tight... so I put my finger up it to see if there was anything abnormal and I noticed that my cervix is closer than I think it use to be (about two inches in) and when touched it bleeds(friable). I did some researh on this and all I could find was that usually this is caused by STDs.. Im a virgin so stds cant be the reason for this.... so what is? could it be possible that my cervix is the only thing infected and not my urinary tract??

Kristin:
I think you should stop taking antibiotics, they are probably making your problem worse at this point. It really sounds like you have a yeast infection. They can cause white discharge, swelling and inflammation of the vagina (which might make your cervix seem closer), and itching. If you don't want to go to the doctor, buy some Monistat or some Gyne-Lotrimin or other over the counter yeast infection medications, but it sounds like you should be seen by the doctor again. Your regular doctor can do a PAP smear and other cultures, and tell you exactly what is going on.

My mom is in the process of trying to find a good female gynocologist for me but in the mean time I still have some questions...would a yeast infection make my cervix bleed when touched, or make me unable to empty my bladder completely, causing my to urinate more frequently??

Hi Kristin:
I'm assuming that you are sure the bleeding from your cervix is totally unrelated to your menstrual cycle...is that right? It really sounds like you need a PAP smear and a pelvic ultrasound to check for anything abnormal, like ovarian cysts, etc. Abnormal bleeding needs to be checked and isn't associated with yeast infections.
About the bladder problem...I had a UTI last year in January, took antibiotics for it, and was sure I still had a UTI for a couple of months afterward, even though all my UA's came back clean. I finally got referred to a really nice woman gynecologist, and she explained that when there is an infection, even after the bacteria is gone, there is residual inflammation that can continue to cause discomfort, urgency, etc. That made sense to me and after another week or so, I didn't notice any more urinary discomfort. Also, when I went to see the her, I definitely had a yeast infection from the antibiotics and she gave me a prescription for that, and told me I could continue to take over-the-counter Uristat (or generic equivalent) for my urinary discomfort.
I do, however, still have pain (no more urinary symtoms) and I'm going to have a laparoscopy soon to see if I might have endometriosis or other adhesions causing my pelvic pain. I don't really have abnormal bleeding, other than heavy bleeding with my period.
There are other possibilities that could cause prolonged urinary pain, like interstitial cystitis in which no bacteria are present, but there is chronic pain and urgency related to that.
You really can't worry about all the possibilities though. Whatever the problem is, you have your mom to help you and you are so lucky for that. I'm sure you will receive great care, no matter what they find (or don't find...remember, it could just be residual from your UTI).
Best wishes to you sweetie. :)

thank you so much SRMom, your advice, encouragement, and reassurance means a lot. Im pretty sure the cerical bleeding isnt associated with my period.. Its been about two weeks since my last one.. Ive stopped taking antibiotics... currently the only thing Im taking is cranberry supplements, and drinking tons of water. Im thinking I have a yeast infection from all the antibiotics ive been taking over the last month, but I think there is something else wrong with my cervix, and possibly my bladder.. and if not it wont hurt to get it checked out. Thanks again for all your help, and I hope everything works out for you.
