ok u guys! now its my turn..

it started 2 months ago.. i went in for a check up cause i have a toothache.. he said i needed a root canal BUT there was something else that was happening in my mouth.. i knew the words he was gonna say.. "honey u have 4 impacted wisdom teeth" i immediatly cried my eyes out right in front of him! well the root canal was so easy.. but in the past 2 months ive been on pain killers.. my bottom left wisdom tooth is really pushing hard to come out.. and all this time ive been online, reading all these messege boards with tears in my eyes.. this is all i think about u guys.. I SWEAR! i fall asleep thinking about it and i wake up thinking about it! on tuesday jan 2nd at 1pm i will get this surgery done.. they say they only do 2 at once.. im hoping they will do both bottoms cause they are the ones causing pain.. i still cant believe the day is almost here.. i notice how all u guys were afraid.. geez, AND I THOUGHT I WAS A BABY! im probably worse then ALL OF U.. im getting put to sleep thank god! my biggest concern is dry socket.. if i never searched for these messege boards i wouldnt have been so damn worried about a dry socket! but when i read all those poor people dying in pain, im telling u i almost sh*t my pants.. i know all about this surgery! i bet i can perform it better then any oral surgeon alive! but why am i so scared? its just the UNKNOWN.. im sick and tired of obsessing about this! this is ruining my life u guys! i cant even go out and party with out this damn surgery popping up in my head! im driving my fiance up the walls. which hurts my feelings.. but its understandable.. its really the only thing i talk about u know! and it sucks cause he is a teacher and he cant take off tuesday (unless the snow keeps on coming) so my best friend is taking me.. AND I CANT SMOKE FOR LIKE 10 DAYS! o well.. that should be a good thing.. and at least ILL LOSE A FEW POUNDS.. my butt is hurting from reading all these posts for like 2 hours.. lol! im acting like this is brain surgery! i should be thankful this is something that almost EVERYONE goes thru! but i need support.. i need more good stories.. steve and lori's story made me smile.. i need more smiles.. im desperate.. i have never been so scared in my life.. just imagine about dwelling on the same thing everyday and night.. i just want to go and get it over with already! lets just pray that this will be another success story.. and i will also be here to help anyone who is getting the surgery after me..

p.s u guys are stuck with me now! lol! help me!!

make me smile dammit!!

oh and by the way.. as im typing this im getting sharp pains in my ears..

As long as you follow the docs post op instructions you will be fine. NO smoking ,NO drinking thru a straw,No rinsing for 24-48hours.
What I dont understand is why they will only do 2 teeth at a time. You say this is an oral surgeons office ,that doesnt seem right. They all believe to do all 4 at one time especially if your getting put to sleep.I would insist on them doing all 4 the same day.
My warm fuzzy feeling story ....I had no problems at all when I had all 4 of mine pulled at one time.
You sound like your a wreck over this ,try to relax a bit ,I know its easier said then done, but your working yourself up to much. Sit back and enjoy the long holiday weekend. As long as you have confidence in your oral surgeon you will be fine.

:Matt,
I am in my late 20's now, When I was 18 I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out, all were impacted within the bone, and the two bottom molars were horizontal. I was knocked out for the extractions. When you get put under for any operation it is ALWAYS a risk, even if you're getting your tonsil's removed. The difference between getting your tonsils out and your wisdom teeth out, is that you are not really all the way under, though you will not really be completely awake, you will NOT remember anything. The Oral Surgeon will be able to talk to you and have you move your head or whatever, and you will be able to respond to his directions. Not only will the oral surgeon be able to perform his work better if you are not awake, but the whole proceedure will go quicker and easier for you. You go asleep, then you wake up, and it's all done. If you're awake you will have to hear all the bone crunching sounds of them breaking the tooth apart, and feel the twisting and pulling sometimes necessary when they are digging out the molars. (Time Will Go By Very Slowly)

I had stitches placed after the extractions, I went home, I was still sleepy from the anesthesia, so I slept all day. I was never given any type of prescription for pain relief, and I really don't recall having any pain. If you remember when you were smaller and you lost a baby tooth, your gums were tender for a good week afterwards. Thats what I would compare it to, in my situation. The worst things I remember were the nasty stitches that I was begging the Oral Surgeon to remove after 7 days, they told me I had to wait for at least 10 days after surgery. I also had bruises on my cheeks just below my cheek bones.
When you go in to see the Oral surgeon for the first time, he will tell you of all the complications that are possible, don't let this scare you, everyone is told these complications before the operation. If it helps ask the oral surgeon how many times any of those complications has happened since he has been practicing. Probably almost none, and keep in mind that an oral surgeon probably does at least 4 a day.
Good Luck, I only wish everyone could have as good as an experience as I did.

I also agree with Bonnie, If this is an oral surgeon, he should want to pull out all four at the same time. Unless there is some medical reason for him only doing 2 at a time, (or unless you're going to a military Dr.) This will only cost him more time, and probably you more money, for him to have you come back for a second time. The two that he will take out will probably be on the same side of your mouth. One on top and one on bottom. But if I were you I'd insist on them getting them all out on the same visit, rather that having to recover twice from the same surgery!
Good Luck!!!

well i called a friends mom who had went to him.. she said the reason is that he feels its to painful for all four and theres more of a chance for complications.. but she said they do one side at a time.. but my bottoms are killing me and i want them out! and i dont see why they would say no to that!!

I would still insist on all 4 done at the same time. I have been in dentistry for 20 years and have never come across an oral surgeon that would prefer doing only 2 at a time if all 4 needed to come out.

Do you live in a really small town or what?

Okay, in my opinion, if they guy has been around for 40 years, I'd definately find someone else. If the Dr. has been doing this for 40 years, then that would make him about 60-70 years old. Now I am young, and originally from a small town, and those Doctors MD or DDS that have been practing that long, just aren't that good of Dr.'s anymore. I like all my Dr.'s to be between the ages of 35 and 55 years of age. Heck I'll even give them to 60, but when it's time to retire, it's time to retire. I also noticed, through personal experience and professional experience, that the quality of care goes down too.

The Dr. may be numbing up your mouth, just as if you were getting a filling done. And it just isn't very safe for your tongue :) to be completely numb, after you wake up. Which brings me to ask:
Are you sure you are seeing an ACTUAL "ORAL SURGEON" or just a Dentist that is PERFORMING Oral Surgery on you. And:
Are you sure he is putting you out for this or just getting you numb and giving you Nitrous Oxide?

and i live in a city.. right outside of new york city.. i dont know if HE himself has been around for 40 years.. its the office thats been around.. all my friends that went to him had no complaints.. and they actually rather u get put to sleep.. i talked to the nurse on the phone.. he is not a dentist.. i just looked in the phone book just to make sure and it says oral and maxillofacial surgeon.. i found out he is highly referred by dentists in our area..

Well I guess I can't complain then. If he is so referred to and so well liked, then it sounds like you will be in good hands! I'd still ask about having them all taken out at once. I'd sure hate to go back and have it done again, even though I had a good experience. It may be a way to get more money out of you by doing it twice, but who knows?
Yes, he should have a DDS or DMD after his name. There are some dentists out there though, that do these kind of things on the side, that was my worry. My sister saw one of those and she had a nightmare experience. General dentists just don't do enough 3rd molar extractions to be really good at it, on top of that they don't put you out, and they take alot longer to complete the proceedure.
Well good luck, and let us know how it goes. And if you have anymore questions, just post'em!

happy new year! well, im not to happy.. tomorrow is the day.. of course im nervous. my back bottom moler is killing me today.. i dont know if its cause this damn wisdom tooth is resting on it.. i have decided im gonna do ONE SIDE.. top and bottom right side.. so maybe its easier for me to eat with only one side done.. i keep thinking "what if he breaks my jaw!" i dont know how he is gonna get the top out.. i can barely get back there myself.. and im also getting over a slight cold.. i feel fine but a tad bit stuffy in the morning.. IS THAT BAD? i hope it doesnt interfear with the anesthesia.. i doubt it..

oh and the reply up there from matt.. he said u dont really go under and the time goes so slow.. he is THE FIRST PERSON THATS SAID THAT! maybe he had a twilight sleep.. but all the people i know say u close ur eyes and BOOM ur already home.. IM NERVOUS FOR THE WAKING UP PART.. i know ill be numb.. but how will i swallow my pills? if they do break my jaw, will i be able to talk and eat? do u guys realize that IM CRAZY? and u know what SUCKS! ill be doing this all over again next year..

HI there Kerry21,
I experianced the same thing as you about feeling your bite is off and is hard to open your mouth. Maybe cuz the jaw is still stiff. I wouldnt worry about it unless it continues for another week or something. Mine was like that for about 2 weeks, but is better now. When do you go in to get your other 2 teeth out? Do you have a follow up appointment?
Take Care,
Lori
