My son has been seizure free (I think) for 7 months. I think I may have seen an absence seizure yesterday. He has both generalized absence and tonic clonic. The abscence presented itself first and the tonic clonic started up after he was placed on meds. Depakote to be exact. Now he's on both depakote and keppra.
If his seizures start again would the little ones or the big ones be more likely to break through? I'm not really sure if he had one or not. We go back to the neuro in November.
Any insight would be helpful. He's spacey enough on the amount of meds he's on. I hate to add more.

I think the big one would break through...at least that is what Tripp's does. He had a SPS last Friday followed by the grandmal one. NO increase in meds for now.

My daughter Brittany has intactable absence with occasional tonic-clonic and the small ones always break through first. She is on Lamictal, Mysoline, and Zarontin with a VNS on rapid cycling. Soon we will be dropping the Mysoline (hyperactivity) and changing the Zarontin to Celontin. Never a dull moment in our house! Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. I'm just going to keep an eye on him. Those darn absence seizures can be so subtle. Before meds he had major eye rolls with them but I realize the meds might be keeping them smaller. Time will tell. I just hate waiting and wondering if he's going to have another TC.

For a lot of people, breakthrough seizures happen....one thng to look for is infections, dehydration, too little sleep, extra stress, menstrual periods, or other personal triggersl. My doc where I moved from let me do "sliding sclae Neurontin, since she knew I understood the med , and wouldn't go nuts with it....always had a maintenance dose, but she'd prescribe enough for rough days, which helped A LOT...

Thanks Vicki,
I'm trying not to get ahead of myself but his TC's usually happen early in the am. Sometimes at night but only once out of bed. I'm afraid I won't hear him. I know it's rare but I worry about him dying. Turning over and smothering. He's just in the next room but still. I get up a couple times a night and check on him.
It doesn't help that my husband is away. Patrick's 5 feet tall and a little over 100 lbs. I'd have a rough time moving him. He always passes out cold after he seizes. He stays out for a long time, wets himself and all. Usually my husband will pick him up and put him in our bed. Oh well if it happens I'll just have to deal with it.
Thanks Again,
Julie

Yes you know it has been very warm here this week. Over 100 degrees, which is unusual for us. Normally Patrick would stay inside when it's that hot but he was at school and had PE and all. Kids never drink enough either. Who knows? I also started giving him his nasal steroid spray (Nasacort) again as we've had really poor air quality with wild-fires burning. His allergies were really acting up. He hasn't used that spray in months and now I'm wondering if it could be a trigger. Seems we stopped using it and then no more seizures. It says nothing on the package insert and his neuro knows he takes it and never said anything. HMMM
Anyway thanks for the response. I hope you start feeling better soon and that things look up for you. I read your post and wanted to send hugs your way also.
Julie
I'll just continue to keep a close eye on him.
