My Hysterectomy story. 1-1/2 years ago during a annual check up the GYN felt something and sugested a sonogram so I had that done and he said I had a 3 cm cyst & 9mm thick endometrium & endometrisis and sugested a Laparoscopy to see how to treat it or go straight for a Hysterectomy and be done with it. I was so scared I did neither one. I just remember him saying you do not have cancer but at my age "49" at the time I should just have a hysterectomy. I left there and did not tell any one. Big chicken that I am. I had no problems with periods or pain my whole life so I figure if it aint broke don't mess with it. I did research on line and decided for my self that it would all go away with menopause when that came around and it was close. I never went back to the doctor and went on with my life and moved away to another town. Never really telling any one about that doctor visit and not thinking it was serious because like I said no pain no problems. Then a year passed and I thought I should go for my annual pap smear like always but did not want to go back to my regular doctor because I ignored his sugestions the year before and besides I moved about 200 miles away, so then came the trying to find a new doctor in a new city so I put it off for another 6 months, "unlike me to do" then I skipped 2 periods and figured it was menopause starting and then I started hurting REALLY bad for a week and my period came and I still hurt off and on even after the period, so I made an appointment with a GYN locally. It took 6 weeks to get in and by then I had another period and still having pain off and on while on period and off period. I go to the doctor appointment and do not tell him any thing is wrong just say that I am there for and annual pap smear, thinking if I have something he can find it without me telling him and HE DID and recomended a sonogram and asked if a passed doctor had ever mentioned finding any thing and so I confess and he really gives me THE TALK about how I should of listened to the other doctor. So after the sonogram comes back it basiclly says the same thing the one I had 1-1/2 year earlier so the doctor says lets just watch it and come back in 6 months for another sonogram to see if it changes BUT if I have symptoms it should be checked out before then, so I leave with out telling him I have slight symptoms. I am thinking it is menopause symptoms, because I believe all GYN's just love to do Hysterectomy's no matter what. So 2 weeks pass and I hurt more than ever and gets bad with left side pains that are sharp that run through my vagina and then my right side starts to hurt same way off and on then one day just riding in my pick up truck "yes I live in Texas" it hurts just from the vibration of the road, then the next day just the seat belt hurts to weat it. So I finally get up the courage to call the doctors office and ask if this pain is from the Cyst or what or should I go to the ER becasue now I am sacred enough to do something. They tell me to drive to the doctor's office and he examined me and said go straight to the Hospital for a laparoscopy so I went and they did it the next morning, I told him to only look and fix what needs to be fixed I don't want a hysterectomy but agreed to one if it was necessary because I had to do something for the pain, so I went under and came back with total hysterectomy. The doctor took pictures of my insides to show me before and after surgery. The cyst had ruptured on my right side and left side ovary was covered in scar tissue really bad and I had endo terribly. Tubes were huge with scars. I am 51 and he said I had this a looong time and does not see how I never had pain until now. I did have to premie babies 35 and 33 years ago and it was becasue of this and never knew it. It has been 9 days since my surgery and I feel fine. I am on the Estradiol Patch for now, lowest dose possible becasue I really did not even want that but the doc said I should for now or I would have sudden menopause. Now I am worried about the hormone patch causing breast cancer or strokes but the doctor says that is not true and gave me information from the Wyeth Estrogen Study that says it is not harmful. So who do you believe? He also says that weight gain or weight loss is a myth after a hyster. He says I may go into a deep depresstion but so far I feel great with no symptoms except for a sore belly. He made 3 incisions on my lower stomach and one through the vagina for the surgery and I go back for check up in early Nov. 6 weeks after surgery. I am 9 days out and feel fine. Any way I was just reading stories on here to relate to and thought I would throw my 2 cents in for what it is worth. :-)

Hi KKPP,
I can relate to your story...because mine is almost identical!!
Believe it or not, I had no previous pain either, and the doctors couldn't believe that.
The only difference in my story is, when I went in for the laparoscopy, they couldn't do it because of all the scar tissue and adhesions. So, he went ahead and did an abd. hyst.
But hey, I think it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I was, but am no longer on HRT.
It is not a myth about weight gain after a hyst.
It may not be immediate, but as time goes on, you will notice your middle spreading  , so exercise...exercise...exercise!! :bouncing:
But all in all, I feel great...and have no regrets!!
Glad you are doing so well.
Have a fast recovery!!
Keep posting on how you are doing!

Hello Ladies.. I went in yesterday for my 6 week post op check up. The Doctor asked me if I had sex yet and I told him no and he said I waited too long and should have started back at 4 weeks post op. Yikes!! I told him that sounded too paiful at 4 weeks. He said if I don't use it I will lose it and I will shrink then no one will be able to get in there. I still have some stiches inside he said should of already come out but haven't but intercourse would help in that. Other than that every thing was great. My exam did not hurt a bit. I was really scared it was going to hurt but it was not painful at all. I asked about the HRT patch I am on and he said I should continue it at least until I am 52 but he recomends never stoping it. He said I am cured and to come back in one year. I feel Ok and back to normal at 5 weeks post op really.. After I left the doctor's office I thought I should of asked what do women do who are divorced or single or for what ever reason do not have intercourse after surgery for lack of partner what does he recomend to keep the vagina from shrinking? Because my husband is having some sexual performance problems right now because of health issues and I did not mention that to the doctor. I was kinda embarassed to talk about it because I had a room full of people in there with me, a nurse and a student nurse and the doctor and a doctor in training for gyn... Have any of you been told the vagina shrinks when healing if not used? He said get some lubricant and get busy with my husband but tried last night and he can not perform because of diabetes-high blood pressure and so on. He takes 8 medications a day. His doctor gave him Levitra to try but he is afraid to take it... I don't want to shrink up then later my husband gets better and then it's too late for me. Any one else been told this?....

 ARE YOU SERIOUS ???
I can not believe your doctor said such a thing to you.
That is so not true!!!
Is this your first post op visit  since you had your hysterectomy??
I am confused.
When I had my hysterectomy, my first post op visit was 1 week after, then a few weeks after that, and then once again.
While being on HRT, I saw my gyn every 6 months, do you know you can get breast cancer with HRT, and other side effects, plus you have to be monitered to make sure the dosage is right, etc.
I was on HRT for 10 years, and saw my doctor every 6 months that whole time, when I wanted to stop HRT, it took exactly one year to "wean" off of the HRT completely.
I think I would start looking for a new gyn (fast), your doctor sounds like a real "JERK" to me.

Abby,
Yes that was my first and only visit to the doctor after my hysterectomy, 6 weeks post op. That is all he said was needed. As for the HRT I thought the same thing as you about it causing cancer but he says it does not and showed me a blind study where women taking placebo had higher cancer risk. He says all I need to do now is get my mamogram and a colonospony before the end of the year. I really don't know how to take him. The visit I had before my surgery I did not care for him and was going to go back to my regular gyn doctor which is 200 miles away but before I got to my appointment with him I had to have emergency surgery and this doctor was closer at 50 miles from me and I had to drive myself.

Abby..
Did you have an adominal hysterectomy? I had a LAVH so maybe that is why I only had one post op visit at 6 weeks? It is an advanced gyn surgery. I took my own stiches out at 2 weeks that were on my stomach. One was a 1/2 inch cut on my belly button area and 2 other 1/2 inch cuts on my lower left abdomin. other stiches were inside the vagina that are suppose to disolve. I am on the patch for hormones, the lowest possible amount and so far so good and I asked about a hormone test and he said only if I have problems that he would give me one. Taking my own stiches out were kinda creepy but it was only one nylon thread loop to just clip and pull and why drive 100 miles round trip for that? Anyways I feel oK so I hope I continue to do well. It is the easiest surgery I ever had so far. I have had rectal surgery which was terrible and took 3 months to recover, and spine surgery which was terrible and took 18 months to recover and I still have problems with that one...

I am so glad to hear that you are doing well.
I had an abd. hyst, due to the fact that endo had caused so much scar tissue and adhesions they attempted, but couldn't do the LAVH.
My surgery was a breeze too.
I suppose all doctors have their own protocal and way of doing things. so, each one does something different.
I am just glad to hear that you are doing fine.
About the hormones, I don't think they really know if HRT is good or bad. When I was on it, my doctor too said it was the greatest, blah, blah. Then all the bad media coverage came out about HRT, so it was my decision to come off of the HRT after 10 years and I am doing okay without it, I do take some herbal supplements. But it seems they always find something bad about everything we thought was good and vice versa.
You are brave to remove your own sutures... but I don't blame you, that's a long drive to see the doctor.
Again, so glad to hear you are having such a fast recovery!! :bouncing:

Abby and KKPP,
I'm finally back on the boards post op, which I wasnt up to coming back sooner till today.
I was relieved to see an updated response to your initial post and would like to reply to you about what the dr told you about " don't use it, you lose it"
this is true for sure.
they have a device that's inserted into the vagina to keep it elasticized and is used I think just about daily in the beginning.
You have to ask your dr about this. I found this out from another woman mentioning it from another on line support group.
You shouldn't be embarrased to ask your dr anything. You could have taken him aside after all the other staff left so you can speak about this sometimes embarrassing situation for some.
it is a real problem with diabetes. I know, because my older brother who is now deceased had a particular surgery performed on his penis so he could have erections again for his wife. this made them both very happy.
I understand the difficulty in bringing this topic of information up with someone you don't feel totally comfortable with.
but he's a dr and believe me, doctors have seen just about everything.
I would've continued seeing that dr like you also because of th mileage problem. it's more convient for you.
call him on the phone or leave a message for him to call you about ordering one of those devices so you can remain normal vaginally and comfortable.
you don't want any discomfort when the time does come for you to have sex again.
even if you're not having sex, you should still use the device.
thank you both for sharing about your hysterectomies.
I am 3 weeks post op.
I wrote this very intense, and dramatic post all about my experience and my pinky finger hit a key on the key board, and I lost every thing. this just happened five min. ago.
this is my second post to you both.
I had a total hysterectomy by laparatomy. because she had to do an exploratory while inside.
I am having 30 pounds of unexplained weight loss before the surgery.
I've had chronic ovarian cysts that just don't go away. one ovary and tube was destroyed from absess and scar tissue. so the only ovary left had a cyst on it from last nov.04.
I finally told her I was sick and tired of suffering from it leaking and causing so much pain, and always having to have trans vag ultra sounds and never knowing if it was going to turn malignant.
so it all came out. I decided in just days.
I told my employers and coworkers I was going in and they were all stunned I was going in so quickly. without much notice.
I filed for short term disablity but have not recieved my benefits yet.
we are suffering financially but I don't see myself getting back to work sooner than the predicted date that the dr first said. nov.29th to be exact.
there were complications with my recovery. intestinal wise.
lots of pain. eating making the pain worst. couldn't have normal bm or pass gas without being intense pain as if the intestines had been pulled out of my abdomen, had a fist shoved thru them and turned them right side out and put them back in abdomen.
she told me she didn't even touch the intestines, only clamped them back.
I had this problem back in 1998 when I had my tubal ligation where I almost died from hemorraging internally. wound up in hospital for 10 days rather than one night of observation.
so I think this sugery was a problem for me due to my past history.
I left hospital post op on fourth day. stomach pains became worst. then I started vomitting, and could barely walk and had to be in the fetal postion to help deal with the sporadic spasms of intentese knife like pain.
I tried over the counter laxatives to help pass it but it didn't work.
had to go to emergency room.
they kept me there.
did xray and ct scan and found a partial bowel obstruction.
small intestine.
nothing but liquids for the four days I was kept there. only the day I left did they try to intfoduce solids. macaronie and cheese and broccoli.
I ate it anyway.
they starved me there. I wasn't even allowed a one cracker.
my gyno called in a surgeon thinking they'd have to do surgery to correct the problem.
but the ct scan contrast that they made me drink for ct scan gave me intense diahreea for 2 days, which moved the blockage, thank god.
the surgeon said if I didn't rest the intestines from food, that he'd have to put in a gastric tube down my throat to remove all the secreations that the stomach produced.
the intestines were very bloated.
I saw results after the third starving day and actually felt some sort of spiritual cleansing from this so called fast. LOL.
I swear.
I can laugh now, but at the time I felt I was living in hell.
I couldn't afford to lose more weight at this point.
everyone was commenting on it.
even the er dr. spoke harshly to my gyno that night I was entered becasue he thought she wasn't taking care of me enough.
she told him I came into office skinny, and that she didn't cause it.
I was so dehydrated.
then bleeding started the day after halloween.
I only bled vaginally for one day after my sugery.
now all of a sudden, I'm bleeding like this?
I waited to call my gyno after 3 days of bleeding.
she gave me exam, told me I'm moving hips too much and told me there's bleeding going on inside and it's coming out of the area where the cervix once was.
I'm dying to do things around here but the body just won't allow me to.
the body ratted on me to my dr.
did any of you bleed this long or that long after surgery?
it's not stopping even now that I'm getting total bed rest again.
I have to go back to her on monday. one week from the exam.
she removed the metal staples from my abomen insicion when I was in the hospital on my second admittance. I thougth it was going to hurt by the size of them, but it didn't hurt at all.
I'm still taking stool softer. my gastro dr prescribed something even better than colace which I used back in 1998. it's a thick clear liquid and you take one tablespoon a day.
it's wonderful.
how long does it take the darn intestines to start funcitoning normally again?
I'm increasing my food and calories which inturn effects the amount of stool.
yikes.
I thougth I'd die this morning upon passage.
I'm sorry if this disgusts anyone, but I'm not ashamed to speak of bodily functions. I love the medical field, always did. instead of getting a degree I chose to become a stay at home mom and raised four beautiful children.
I'm 45 yrs. old. and got married at a very early age so there fore got my child bearing done at a young age.
It feels good to be able to be here at this site sharing problems and finding others experiences to help me as well.
I hope I didn't turn any of you off with my being so vivid in description.
sincerely,
Linda S.

Hi Linda,
Gee, I am so sorry that you have had such a tough time with your surgery.
I was just fortunate to have such an easy time and was discharged from the hospital approximately 36 hours after surgery. I have a high tolerance for pain and am a fast healer. I also think the more you move around the sooner you get to feeling better.
With you being diabetic, that might explain why it is a bit more difficult for you. And no 2 people are the same.
Post op, I had no vaginal bleeding. Just some the first night, after that none at all. Once any old blood or drainage is out after surgery, where would any other bleeding come from...hmmm? Especially any new bleeding.
I was encouraged to move a lot after surgery, and bounced back quickly.
As far as bowel moments, I was told by my doctor and many others that it would be painful. My doctor suggested lots and lots of fruits...such as prunes..and vegetables to keep the bowels moving. I admit the first one was pretty bad...ouch...but after that it was okay.
I am sure that you will be okay and recover soon, it just takes longer with some people especially if you have any other medical problems..
Just hang in there and follow your doctors orders.
Oh yea...I was never told and never experienced anything to prove this statement true...use it or lose it.
I have never heard of any device like you mentioned either. I have heard of something like that, but it is used to strengthen the bladder muscles in women, could that be the same thing? I have a dr.s appointment on Dec. 6th with my gyn for check up, I will ask him.
Hope you are feeling better with each new day.
Keep in touch!!
Abby

Hello... Sorry to hear about all you have gone through. I am glad to hear you mentionthe "use it or lose it" statement, I was begining to think my doctor was perv or jerk or something. I am going to call his office and ask about the devise you mentioned. I hope they don't laugh at me and make a office joke after they hang up. Anyway's, I never had any bleeding, I woke up after surgery with a huge pad on, you know the dreaded hospital pad that is as big as a saddle. The 2 days I was in the hospital I kept wondering why I had it on. Then when I got home I even wore one for another day just expecting something to happen but I never did bleed, then I switched to panty liners because I had drainage which lasted about 4 to 5 weeks I think. No one ever mentioned any thing about my bowels and I never had a problem with mine. I was told I would have gas and gas pain after surgery but I never did. Only thing I have noticed about my bowels is that when I am sitting here at the computer I sometimes feel like I need to go have a bowel movement but I go to the bath room and I don't. I am not constpiated because I go every day I just kinda get the feeling like I need to when I sit some times??? Today I am 7 weeks post op. I have been feeling pretty good until Monday night my husband had a rare moment and we tried to have sex but he cold not complete the task, anyway what little bit happened made my abdomin sore where I had surgery. I feel like I did at 4 weeks post op now, I feel like I went backwards in recovery now since that episode. Like I said I may call the doctor and mention that and about the devise you mention.... Keep posting and let us know how you are doing...

An update, I did call the doctor's office today and talked to his nurse about the use it or lose it situation and she said he was not kidding about that and no they did not have any devise to use that was mentioned in an earlier post but she said just use a personal toy if you know what I mean and that should work just the same. She said the word that starts with a "D or a V" but I don't know if I can type that on here. Also as for the sore abdomin she said that is because I am not totally healed inside yet and I should be better after 2 months and if not then maybe go to a gastro doc or a urinary doc...... Ok.... I hope Linda is doing better.....
