It won't burn any significant amount of extra calories for fat burning *but* it is good for posture, and the muscle memory will help to keep the stomach tight rather than just letting it 'hang out'. The way to lose the fat is through diet and cardio, primarily.

Through the duration of your injury I would say it wouldn't do any harm. In fact, it does burn some calories but don't get to anxious about the results. I suggest doing light weight upper body resistance training and a better diet while your leg heals.

'Sucking in your stomach', is referred to as stomach vacumes in the bodybuilding/fitness world. It helps strengthen the stomach muscles as well as flatten the abs.
When you do sittups, most people push their stomachs out, giving them a 'bloated ab' apperance...If you suck your stomach in, it just helps flatten it.
