10 days after my prostate was removed via robotic surgery I feel great! I felt good after the first few days. I am 51 years old. One day in the hospital, 2 pain pills, catheter came out 6 days later. No urinary problems at all. Five little cuts to the stomach area which will probably disappear. This has been a lot easier than I expected. My final pathalogy reports are also “about as good as it gets” according to the doctor. I had the operation performed at Scottsdale HealthCare Shea in Arizona by Dr. Dale Russell. I am convinced that the reason everything went so well was because of his skills and the blessing of the Lord. If you can go with the ROBOT

Congratulations azguy!!! :angel:
Great to hear the good news and I couldn't agree with you more. The ROBOT's advantages, to me, far exceed any other form of having that ole gland removed if you are a candidate for surgery to begin with. As with any type of surgery, the skill and experience of the surgeon is what really makes it a success or not. I am in awe of today's technology and the dedicated professionals who make it work. God bless them all!

Again ... congrats and be sure to keep in touch as your recovery progresses.

Regards,
Thom in VA

I am new to this forum. I received biopsy results Oct. 14th, of Gleason 6 Stage I,II and have opted for surgery. The dilema now is which type, the traditional open or the Robot. I have both options but am agonizing over this decision here are my concerns;
No real data is available on Robot % of free margins. Some opine that the open surgery is better able to excise the tumor and the downside issue is longer recup and more pain. Surgeons with the Da Vinci cannot "feel" de tumor or nodules and may not cut enough out leaving what is termed positive margins. So are we sacrificing longevity for quick fix? At the moment after reading tons of material I am opting for the Robot but hope to find a good surgeon with experience.
Certainly the paramont issue is tumor removal. Which is best, I'm all ears!

My uro did both types of surgery. I asked him why anyone should use traditional surgery versus robotic. He said if the person was severely overweight or they had scar tissue from previous surgeries he would use traditional. With a camera inserted into the abdominal area, a bright light, a magnifying lense, and the ultra steady hands of the robot this will become the “gold standard” of prostate surgery.

I join the others in happiness that you have had the surgery with such good results!
Like your doctor said," It can't get better than that!"
Keep us posted on your continued recovery.

Thanks AZGUY2 you broke the code! This medical world is certainly mind boggling to the layman. All doctors seemingly think their technique is the best and sell hard. Even very reputable medical institutions cast their fine nets very aggressively. Business is still business…..
I appreciate your comments. I will meet with a very highly recommended Robotic quy out of Tulane. Seems they are back in business back in New Orleans. If all goes well I should be meeting the Da Vinci next week. I am also of the feeling that Robotics is here to stay. It’s the learning curve issue that concerns me. Many mediocre docs use this tool because it is more “forgiving” and can compensate for a shaky hand or inexperience.
I’ll share my experience when able. God Bless all you good folks out there. I have been humbled by this experience and am grateful I am afforded options….
