I've had severe anxiety for about 4 years now. Especially at night for some reason, the doctor put me on Serax. I take 75MG at bedtime, but it doesn't seem to be working. I wanted to try Xanax, but the doctor told me it was habit forming, so she did not want to give it to me. Before she put me on Serax, she had me on Ativan. 10MG at bedtime and that did nothing at all. The serax seem to work a little better than ativan, but I'm still having bad panic attacks, do you think my dosage should be upped, Im only on 75MG at bedtime, any thoughts?? Shane.

Im sorry your having a hard time with your dr. I just was looking up my xanax prescription and Ativan is in the same class of drug. I had 2 prior drs at the same practice, neither of them would give me Xanax....even though all others failed and I had much success 7yrs ago with xanax. Well, these 2 doctors left the practice and I had an appt with the Head dr in this practice. I figured I may be wasting my time but he offered me Xanax without me even asking. He is also trying me on Xanax XR its a time release version. Xanax works differently on people. It is not a wonder drug for everyone! I'v heard Ativan, and klonopin are just as good a Xanax for many people.
I think most dr's feel xanax is to addictive and doesn't stay in the system long enough.
When I asked the nurse about Xanax XR she had never heard of it and she was on regular xanax. She is now going to look into it for her own use.
My mom was on Ativan too 10mgs did nothing for her, after they moved her up to 20 she was fine. Sometimes you just need to "tweak" the dosage. But you need to consult your Dr first before doing so.

I find Serax to be a very gentle medication too. It does little for me but i also get from my doctor that it is not as addictive as others. If your anxiety is only at night, you might want to try sleep aids rather than antidepressants.

to shane all the meds you mention are valium type, type
benzo equivalency chart into a search engine to compare the doses of each, none are more habit forming than others although xanax does have a bad name
youa re lucky to get these meds, many cant, IMO they shouldnt be taken before bed unless you cant sleep as I dont think any last for 24 hours, they are best taken as needed, with a few tablets carried with you when out
xanax XR can be expensive and I dont think its worth it, clonazepam is a good long lasting benzo and cheap in generic

Thank You eveyone, the only thing is, the doctor won't even go up on the serax, she says that I'm already on a high dose, 75MG at bedtime, is that a large dose??. I know that all of those drugs are benzodiazepines, as I was on Ativan as well and that did nothing either. I'm already on Clonodine for sleep, 2MG at bedtime as well, I'm not having trouble sleeping, just the anxiety, I wish they could give me Midazolam.
