Ok the drs office called. His sperm count is 20 million which is low in the gray area. The motility is normal, the morphology is only 50% which is not good. I don't know what normal is, I think it is 70%. They said that everything else looked ok except the morphology, the count and they found occasionaly inflamation. I am really upset now. I cried about it. My dr told me not to panic about it but i can't help too. They want him to see a urologist. We have an apt next week. What will a urologist do and should we see a infertility specialist? Could heat cause inflamation? He drives a truck which he is home every night but could sitting down with all that heat cause inflamation? He is trying boxers out now he was wearing briefs.

I just went though the same ordeal with my husband's sperm problems and felt hopeless for several days after we found out. I'm realizing now that things can be ok and that I'm jumping to conclusions too soon. We've been to the Urologist last week and have found even further problems (antisperm antibodies), but the bottom line is that there is still hope, although it might take some time and money (which we don't have right now!). I was so shocked to realize this struggle was in front of us it just totally depressed me for a few days. I understand how you feel and it will get easier to handle after some time. The thing you need to realize is that your chances to have a baby are far from over.

What we did was have his sperm analyzed, then he saw a urologist and then yesterday I went and had a consultation with a Reproductive Endocrinologist at the same reproductive clinic as my husband and she went over everything in detail with me...our options, next steps, etc. I think that would be a good thing for you to do...

There are vitamins and suppliments your husband can take to improve his sperm characteristics and they really do help. I'm sure the Urologist will recommend appropriate suppliments when he has his appointment. For his appointment, they will give him an exam to see if there are apparent problems and then discuss problems, causes, solutions and treatment options.

I wish you luck with your appointment. Often times, these problems can be overcome. Hang in there!

Thanks for replying. Was your hubby results as bad as mine? What does the anitbodies do and how did the urologist find out they were present?

His count was a little low, his morphology was bad and motility was low the first time he had it analyzed and he had what they call slight agglutination (sticking together). So then he had the urologist appointment and they did another sample that morning of his appointment and his counts and morph and motility was better the 2nd time, but they were sticking together really bad the 2nd time, which can indicate antibodies are present, so the urologist had the lab check for antibodies (a test that takes a couple of hours) and sure enough he had them.

What the antibodies can do is attach to the head of the sperm and prevent the sperm's ability to penetrate the egg. Or they can attach to the tail and prevent the sperm from moving freely. Unfortunately, 94% of my husband's sperm are affected (yikes!) and they are mostly on the head.

The first thing they are trying with us is a 30 day course of antibiotics. Sometimes the antibodies can be there due to a hidden infection, so if that's the case the antibiotics might get rid of the antibodies. If not, we have no choice but to have IVF w/ ICSI. ICSI is where they manually inject the sperm into the egg and then IVF is where they implant the fertilized embryos back into my uterus. (We're hoping the antibiotics work!!) We won't know until December if the antibiotics worked.

This is my understanding of what is going on with us. Honestly though, your situation might not be this bad so don't fret yet. I read a study of patients with poor sperm quality who took zinc and had a 100% pregnancy rate, so sometimes it's as simple as vitamins... Good luck on your appointment. Let me know if you have any other questions!
