I have high blood pressure and recently got a BP machine. My husband checked his blood pressure, which was fine, but his pulse rate is in the low 40's. From what I understand, between 70 and 80 is the norm? I got him to check twice last night and twice today and all times it is in the low 40's. Mine is always in the high 90's, which I know is a little high. But, what would cause someone's to be so low and is it dangerous? Mine is twice as high as his. He's 27, in very good shape. He's very active exercises/lifts weights/plays hockey/ etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know that really active, fit people have lower heart rates. But that does seem really low. I would call a Doc and ask about it.

That's a really low heart rate. He should see a doctor just to be safe. Some people who are in extremely good shape safely have heart rates in the 40s, but it's rare. A low heart rate is dangerous if it's not due to physical fitness.

My heart rate drops into the high 40's when resting, my Dr. said that is normal for some people. I do not know if your husbands rate is resting or just sitting down and taking the rate. If I am cleaning or busy doing things and sit down and take my rate it is in the high 60's to mid 70's.

Well conditioned people have lower heart rates from what I have read, I am not well conditioned as I am 64 years old. My husband recently had a heart attack and is on meds to keep his pulse rate low, usually is in the mid 50's at rest.

Of course it is always better to get checked by a Dr.

I don't know the exact number and it may be based on an individual's toerance, but a low heart rate can cause one to passout. Also, a very low HR can cause blood clots under certain conditions.

It seems to me being in the low 40's doesn't leave much of a margin for a dangerously low HR that could arise unexpectfully.

Thank you all for your responses, I really appreciate it. I am trying to talk him in to getting checked by the doctor, but he's not one to go and he keeps saying no.
