View Full Version : High Fructose Corn Syrup?

Concerned Male

I was wondering some things about high fructose corn syrup. Is it considered natural? Cause I've seen it in the ingredients of some foods they were labeled as being 'all natural'. High fructose corn syrup seems to be in so many different foods at the grocery stores. Is it bad for a person's health to eat a lot of it?

I haven't researched it yet; however, I know it to be a very concentrated sweetner full of calories and hard to digest so it can cause alot of weight gain and some people can't make enough of the enzymes to digest it and thus get stomach pain from it. It's called fructose intolerance (simular to lactose intolerance but newer and not as well known, can be mistaken for IBS). My daughter has it.

I wouldn't eat alot of it.

It's corn sugar. To your body sugar is sugar and most things made with flour - bleached white flour convert in your body to sugar. Natural or not it still is a BAD idea to consume much sugar or refined white flour or anything that makes your blood quickly acidic.

It makes my kids hyper- it is a "dirty" syrup, and extremely hard to digest. We avoid it
completely

No

False and misleading, tell me about it.

It is bad for a person's health to eat any of it. I know most products do have high fructose corn syrup, it's impossible to avoid it completely. Avoid it as much as you can.

May I suggest that it is pretty easy to avoid high fructose corn syrup completely. My method is to cook from scratch. I eat a piece of fruit or use pure fruit juice instead of buying fruit-flavored drinks or other products. When I want something sweet I sprinkle a teaspoon of sugar in my tea or on my corn-only cornflakes. I buy plain pork or turkey breasts or chicken and I slice it for sandwiches instead of buying various sandwich meats that have a loooong list of unpronounceable ingredients in them. I have heard that one can eat a lot healthier by staying on the outside aisles of a grocery store -- there you'll find the fruits and veggies and cheese and meat counters. The products that are heavy with the wonders of modern chemistry are often in the inner aisles.

Just food for thought. :)

I was told by a doc to avoid it completely, so I do ... But it can be tough because it's in darn near every processed food out there (seems like anyway).
If you look long enough, you can usually find a simular product that doesn't have it as an ingredient. I've gone pretty much "whole foods" only, but I still use things in recipes and the occasional condiment, so I still have to read the labels. FYI...my rule of thumb...if god/nature didn't make it...don't eat it.
Or...our bodies didn't evolve on "high fructose corn syrup". :)

Staying away from "processed" foods completely is probably one of the healthiest things you could do for your body. Especially if you are already overweight.

America's problem with weight comes at least as much from the kinds of foods we eat as from the quantities of food. Imagine a child sitting and consuming a thousand calories of raw fruits and vegetables while watching cartoons after school!!! It wouldn't happen! But they will sit and consume an entire bag of potato chips! and we can see what that is doing to their bodies just by looking at the playgournd at our schools.

I like the suggestion of sticking to the outside isles of the super market... at least in america, that's where you are going to find the whole foods, the truly natural foods. But that's also where you are going to find the most work involved in preparing a meal... It would seem that 'work' equals 'healthy' when it comes to meal preparation, and American's don't want to have to put in the time or attention it takes to eat healthy.

Staying away from corn sweeteners is going to mean staying away from processed foods... If your up for the challenge... GOOD FOR YOU!
