Good Morning:
First time on the "high cholesterol" board, although I've checked out some of the others. I've been able to lower my numbers significantly over the past year with just diet and exercise. However, my goal is to get the bad cholesterol below 200. I'm at about 220 now. I was at 207 a few months ago, so I guess I "fell off the wagon" just a bit. I started at 287! I know some of the problem is heredity. I don't want to do the prescription meds if at all possible. After reading several of the posts on the board, I've been thinking about trying fish oil capsules and Cholestoff. Could one of you experts give me some advice on that? Is doing both a good idea or should I try one or the other first? Thanks so much!

Well, I don't consider myself an expert. I'm not a health professional and have just been kicking around these boards and dealing with my own cholesterol problems for the past couple of years. I know absolutely nothing about Cholestoff, but know that my own doctor recommended taking 3 grams of fish oil a day when I told her I wanted to try diet first before medication. So I'd be inclined to do that. The problem with starting both at the same time is if your numbers did come down, you'd have no idea which was helping. From everything I've read, though, the fish oil does more for heart health than just bring numbers down, so you might want to consider taking the fish oil even if it didn't bring numbers down. After all, the real point of this all isn't just to make your numbers look good, it is to improve your risk level. Of course, eating fish several times a week would probably be better, but if you aren't inclined to do that, than go for the fish oil.
