I may sound like an aweful mom, but my baby hates to burp...I can usually tell when he has to, and then it only takes ten second of me patting to get him to burp. And then he is usually peeved at me because he hates having his meals interrupted for anything! If I try for two minutes, and he hasn't burped....I just assume he doesn't need to and I move on. If he isn't fussy or spitting up....I don't force it.

If you are really worried about gas tho, get him those infants gas relief drops. :)

Are you breast for bottle feeding? I'm breastfeeding, and have a hard time getting her to burp (4 weeks old). My Ped said breastfed babies tend to not burp as much as bottle fed. Yet, she has terrible gas (stomach gurgling, farting, etc), and it takes us sometimes up to 30 mins to get her to burp even the tiniest bit.

I just started using gas drops earlier this week, and it seems to help, but only just a little.

I'm finding by constantly rubbing and patting her back throughout the day (not just at feedings...but just as we hold her) is also helping a little too.

I'm not a pro at this, but gas pains make me feel really bad for her.

Try a product called gripe water...it works very well with gas problems, many moms on here (including me) give it a thumbs up. Also, it's true that nursed babies need to be burped less. I rarely burped mine when I nursed. THey aren't taking in a ton of air when they nurse as compared to a bottle. The reason for his tummy issues may be what you are eating, not the lack of burping.

I'm also like lex jude...If DD doesn't burp after a minute or so I let it go

Also, for gas, lay him down on his back and gentily pump his little legs. Push his knees up to his chest and them stretch them back down. That helps get the gas moving and moving out! Do it kinda slowly.

Good luck. If he keeps having a lot of problems with gas that is really bugging him, talk to the doc...you may need to change your diet or try a soy or lactose free formula. Congrats on your new little angel!! :)

I got really lucky and DS burps really easily. We started off with the knee method until he got strong enough to push himself off and then we had to switch to the shoulder. The only thing I found with him is if I go to burp him and he's upset he won't do it no matter how long I try. He has to be calm and relaxed. Sometimes aside from just regular patting and rubbing I massage him all over with my fingers. It works most of the time but if it doesn't and he's still upset, I just keep feeding him till he calms down enough to burp. He must have inherited the ability to belch from his dad.

The other weird thing I do and I don't even know why I do it or if it actually helps but for some reason I always make a really big deal out of it when he does. Who knows? Maybe it helps.

Hey, My son was challenging to burp in the beginning and what worked best for him, was I would sit him in my lap sideways, and Put one hand under his chin where I was holding his face and put the other on his back and rock him back and forth slowly. Then also the patting and rubbing his back with him on my shoulder or him laying across my lap. Good luck.
