I had my OSS appointment this week and I am fusing although the lowest level is a little slower than the rest. Plate and screws are in place it really looks good.
I still have some soreness in the trap muscles and the muscles that run down the shoulder blade. Dr. says it will deminish with time and I look really good 12 weeks out. Released to normal activities.
Hope everyone else is doing well.

Cindee,
Glad to hear you are doing so well.. It gives me hope! How many times did you have to go back to doctor before you were released. I have my first visit on 10/17/05. I have noticed that the left side shoulder around the blade gives me pain (sharp at times) to where I have to roll out of bed or to get off the couch.

Maw Maw I was released to full activities but am still following up with my OSS. I will see him again in two months and more x-rays.
I had and have the same pain in the right shoulder blade. Although it is much better now. Getting out of bed isn't bad at all now but I still roll out. I had a hard time for the first three weeks and opted to sleep in my recliner, it was easier to get up and down. In the begining it felt like my shoulder was dislocated almost or the muscle was torn.
The OSS told me that the muscle stuff could take 6mos. to a year to resolve. I had problems for almost 2 years before I had surgery. The muscles haven't been used much I guess.

Allograft? Autograft? BMP? Did they use Dynamic Plating or Static Plating? A single plate or two plates? Do you know what kind of plating - i.e. manufacturer? Did they scrape off any Osteophytes?

Cindee,
Glad to hear you've got the all-clear however you should continue to take it easy. It can take six months to a year to start really feeling back to normal and resume full activity. Are you doing any physical therapy? - in my case that really made a big difference in my recovery, slowed me down and got me into a good exercise routine.
Hope you continue to make steady progress,
W

I had an allograph with a single plate and six screws. I'm not sure what type of plate other than it was titanium. I had no BMP. I asked my OSS about BMP and he told me it was FDA approved for lumbar but not cervical. Some Dr.s have used it but sometimes it can cause swelling in the throat post surgery. He opts not to use it. For lumbar it proves quite successful though.
Even though I have been released to full activities I do continue to take it slow. If I push it I definately can tell it. I am not in therapy. I do have streches that I do for ROM and was told with normal activity it will improve on its own, which it has.

Glad to see you are doing better, I am going in for Fusion of c4-5,c5-6 in November. Have second thoughts. I have tried everything from therapy, drugs, shots. Nothing helps for long time. I am so fustrated. I have muscle spasms and pain going down my rt arm into my thumb and pointer finger. The more I move around the worse i get with pain. Please help, like to hear from someone with similiar problems and what should I do. Surgeon says I have bulging disc at c4-5,c5-6. DDD, and mild canal stenosis, If I don't do surgery I could be crippled in 5-10yrs what do ya think? PLEASE HELP?

If you have tried everything and can't get rid of it get it fixed. I too had second thoughts and almost called it off because I was feeling a little better. Before surgery the tip of my left thumb and pointer were going numb off and on, it doesn't do that anymore. Each day is better with a bum day here and there. For me surgery has made things much better. I still have some muscluar stuff but it is very very very mild as compaired to before surgery. I only took tylenol 3 for a few days post surgery. Good luck, you will do great.

What kind of surgery did you have? Nothing takes this pain away. I was up all last night, slept 3hours. Took vicodin Ex does not help with pain. I am going to do the surgery i just hope it works. I work for therapist and they try to elevate some pain but does not help much. They have been so good to me. My therapist thinks i will do so much better with surgery. What else have you done. How was your pain?

Like you I tried every thing. The pt told me that everytime she touched my nerve it would start spasming. Traction made it worse, shots did not help. Sleep what was that! I had acdf on c5,6,7 on 9/29/05. I feel so much better. Not quite there yet. After reading post i know it could take a while. I to felt silly about having the surgery. so much that i would not let my hubby go to the doctor visits with me. Then I did on the surgery visit. Doc showed him my films and explained everything to him.
I work on a computor 8 hrs a day and it got to the point that i was typing with right hand cause the left would start going numb. I was out of work for 2 months before surgery. I still have some pain but from reading many many post from others who have gone thru this it will take a while to get there. And i will! Remember to ask your doctor any question even if you think it is silly. I did. Hope all goes well and keep us posted.
Good luck

Lee 123 I had ACDF 5-6 and 6-7. Like you I tried everything. Before surgery ice helped alot. There were times I couldn't sleep and would literally pack my neck in ice just to sleep. Pain pills and muscle relaxers did nothing for me. The best thing I did take was Relafen which is an anti-inflamatory arthritic drug, though it did cause some problems with my stomach.(mild cramping and loose bowels) This was the only thing other than swim therapy that seemed to help. When I slept I could only sleep with a pillow under my neck and a pillow under my knees. This seemed to relieve the pressure and unlike others I slept fine, but this was the only way I could sleep.
