Celestine 10-07-2005, 02:11 PM Hi everyone! Just wondering how early a person should start giving a baby tummy time? My son is three weeks and although he can hold his head up not too bad on my shoulder, it's alot harder for him on the ground. I'm worried about his little face hitting the floor. When did you guys start?
Karen62705 10-07-2005, 03:27 PM I think ds was around 2 weeks when we started. we do tummy time on my bed, so his face can't hit the floor. I let him be the judge on how long we did it for. He would let me know when he had enough. There little necks do tire quickly so you should start out with just a minute or two at a time. Watch his behavior, he'll let you know when it's time to stop.
Celestine 10-07-2005, 05:23 PM Thanx Karen. That sounded awful I know after I read it. I should have clarified that he's on some cushy blankets and not on the hard floor. :) Still looks painful to me. I'll keep trying with him then!
HI there
My ds is almost 11 weeks old and we started doing tummy time at 9-10weeks. He's finally starting to lift his head up..but right after he's done that for about 30 seconds he's done and he sure lets us know by his crying! :) He really doesn't like this and i have a hard time doing it because he cries but i know that it needs to be done as i've read that this gets the baby ready to crawl and helps him develop? I put him on his tummy about 3 times a day for only a minute at a time in his crib..I know it's not much but it's working! :)
Congrats on your son!
S :)
Jess_10 10-08-2005, 11:25 AM I was told to give my daughter tummy time when he ombilical cord had fallen off.
worried_mommy 10-08-2005, 02:04 PM I was told to give tummy time right from birth.
Jess_10 10-08-2005, 04:48 PM well hey every doctor is different....

Sorry if I came across rude... I didn't mean too. I was just saying what my Dr said is all, of course they are all different.
Kiera1595 10-10-2005, 08:07 AM I've posted this before..but it is a great trick that really helped my little ones. Roll up a small towel and put it like a straight line from under one armpit, under the upper chest and out the other armpit. It gives them a little support and helped my kids not cry so much and not bonk their little noses so hard. I also heard people say they used the boppy..but it always seemed too big/high for that.
Boo Boo 10-16-2005, 10:35 AM My little on eis nine weeks and im going to try what you suggester Kiera, thanks for the tip1! by the way - silly question what is tummy time? is it lying the baby down on the tummy on a surface ? Thanks :)
JenW67 10-16-2005, 08:53 PM Boo Boo,
That's it. It is supposed to be good for them as the develop their arm/chest muscles as well as their necks. Also, it is supposed to help them from getting a flat head due to spending so much time lying on their backs.
My guy has hated it so far. He has an acid reflux problem and it seems to be aggravated by tummy time. I try to do it when his tummy is empty and have been able to get a few minutes in here and there lately.
I think that is you did a search online, you'd be able to find tons of information about it.

Gayle0000 10-17-2005, 10:59 AM We started as soon as the cord fell off. I put her on the boppy pillow for pressure on the stomach (for gas) and to let her work on lifting her head.
My husband and I both also put her on our chests (on her stomach) and let her play that way.
Ava is now 5 weeks old, and has been holding her head up on her own for a week already...still a tad wobbly, but she should be good to go in a week.

Boo Boo 10-17-2005, 11:54 AM Thanks Jen , l will try and put he ron her tummy when its empty:)
dizzygirl 10-17-2005, 01:34 PM the boppy works great for tummy time! We started ast about a month, ds has torticollis, his neck tilts to the side, and tummy time is the fastest way to cure it. I wish we did it earlier, maybe he would have not developed it!
Celestine 10-17-2005, 03:06 PM Is it just me or am I the only one who's son is really lazy when it comes to tummy time? lol He still hates it and it seems like he won't even try. He holds his head up extremely well when he's upright, I barely have to hold it to burp him anymore. He'll hold it straight up and look over my shoulder when I have him up. Unfortunately I put him on his tummy and he just cries and lies there.
He's got really strong legs and I was joking with hubby the other day that he'll be walking before he crawls because he refuses to be on his stomach.
BTW, he was too lazy to breastfeed too. Three sucks and if nothing was coming he got angry and quit. I think he's a man of very little patience. lol
