I posted a couple of days ago that I chipped a tooth but so far nobody has answered. I see dentist tomorrow hopefully. I have been a nervous wreck all weekend because I have a history of pain after any dental intervention. I had an extraction 7 years ago and have had pain in that area on and off since, as well as other areas of my mouth. My question now though, is does anyone else get tooth pain when they are nervous? I went to the dentist a few weeks ago and he x rayed that whole area and it was negative. Today it hurts again on and off. Could it be from muscles tightening, or a bad case of "nerves"?

Stress can cause pain almost anywhere. But, in your case, I'm not so sure that there isn't a physiological explanation. A dentist can fix a cracked tooth, but for that kind of pain, you should see an orthodontist. (dental surgeon) They will have more experience with nerve problems.

It doesn't hurt to get on the Internet and look for information. Look up some dental colleges. Ask questions if you can. That way, when you see the orthodontist, you'll know what to ask.

How are things going for you since your last post? I also think sometimes my toothaches get worse when I am stressed out about them. I am sure there has got to be a connection. Take care and try to relax. Do surf the web for information and talk to your dentist.

Hi Veggie, thanks so much for the reply and concern. I have been to so many specialists and they diagnosed it as atypical odontalgia...marked by chronic pain with no real known cause or cure, but usually brought on by dental work. It all started after a molar extraction. I had the chipped tooth bonded 2 weeks ago so that seems fine so far. With my history, any dental intervention scares me! I am sure that I get tooth pain when I'm nervous, it has happened often. I have a fear of toothaches more than anything else, so this is an awful way to live, I am always scared this is the "real thing" and it will be at night when no dentists are open!! So far it hasn't happened. I have had pains but never exruciating.
